Overview of Emergency Start Mains Power Failure Gas Supply Failure Ventilator Failure Fresh Gas Delivery Failure Ventilator and Fresh Gas Delivery Failure Display Failure User Interface Failure System Failure
Apollo Designed to Support: Increased patient safety Maximum machine availability in unlikely events of failures at all times independent of the existing cause
10.1 Emergency Start The emergency start procedure shortens the self test when the Apollo must be operational immediately. The emergency start procedure can be performed up to ten times in succession. After ten cancellations, the system will not allow another cancellation and a complete self test must be performed. NOTE: This procedure should only be used in emergency situations!
10.1 Emergency Start Power on the machine by pressing the main power switch on the front of the machine. An acoustic tone sounds. 2. Check that all vaporizers are closed. Set an appropriate fresh gas flow using the oxygen flow control knob. Verify adequate flow by checking the total flow meter. 4. Start manual ventilation. 5. Continue manual ventilation while the software is internally loaded and the electronics are tested. After about 35 seconds, the Check List screen appears. 6. Press the >Cancel Test< key on the Check List screen. The machine runs through a minimal self test that lasts about 10 seconds. Manual ventilation is interrupted during this time, but spontaneous breathing can continue. After the minimal self test, the workstation switches to standby mode.
10.2 Mains Power Failure In the event of power failure the Apollo automatically switches to the built-in uninterruptible power supply (battery backup). Provided that the battery is fully charged, operation will be continued for at least 30 minutes (up to 90 minutes, depending on the ventilation parameters). The message POWER FAIL is displayed in the status field on the screen, together with the remaining battery capacity in percent.
10.2 Mains Power Failure If the battery is almost depleted, the message BATTERY LOW will be displayed. Apollo permits manual ventilation with 100% O2 in the event of a power failure and depleted battery. The fresh gas measurements, ventilator, and monitoring are inactive. In case of complete power failure: Close N2O and AIR flow valves Check vaporizer settings Open O2 flow to the desired level (using total flow meter) Ventilate patient manually
10.3 Gas Supply Failure If the gas supply fails, the Apollo displays a message in the status field at the top of the screen, corresponding to the failed gas: NO AIR SUPPLY NO N 2 O SUPPLY or NO O 2 SUPPLY Open the valve on the corresponding backup cylinder at the back of the machine Restore the central pipeline gas supply If there is no cylinder backup supply for the failed gas, the corresponding LED on the front panel of the machine will flash red. In case of N2O or air failure, 100% O2 should be delivered; be sure to set the O2 to an appropriate flow. In case of O2 failure, the SORC prevents hypoxic gas mixtures. Oxygen must be restored immediately.
10.4 Ventilator Failure If the ventilator fails, the message VENTILATOR FAIL is displayed in the alarm field on the screen. The ventilation soft keys are removed from the screen and a prompt appears advising the user how to proceed: Ventilator failure! Only manual ventilation available. The machine automatically switches to Man/Spont mode: Ventilate the patient manually If pressure or volume monitoring fails, adequate substitute monitoring must be ensured.
10.5 Fresh Gas Delivery Failure If the fresh gas mixer fails, the following message is displayed in the status field on the screen: GAS MIXER FAIL and the numerical values for the fresh gas flows appear grayed out to indicate that they may be inaccurate. The current ventilation mode remains active. Close N2O and air flow control valves Check vaporizer setting Set O2 flow to the desired level using the total flow meter NOTE: Refer to the total flow meter for approximate total flow.
10.6 Ventilator and Fresh Gas Delivery Failure If both the ventilator and gas mixer fail, the following message is displayed in the status field on the screen: GAS + VENT FAIL. The ventilation soft keys are removed from the screen and a prompt appears advising the user how to proceed: Ventilator failure! Only manual ventilation possible. The machine automatically switches to Monitoring mode. Close N2O and air flow valves Check vaporizer setting Set O2 flow to the desired level using the total flow meter Ventilate the patient manually
10.7 Display Failure If there is no display on the monitor screen: Switch the machine off. Set O2 flow to the desired level using the total flow meter. Check the vaporizer setting. Ventilate patient manually. Provide adequate substitute monitoring.
10.8 User Interface Failure If the keypads, confirm knob, or flow control knobs are not operational: Select the monitoring mode. Ventilate patient manually. Observe the total flow meter for approximate flow!
10.9 System Failure If the system no longer responds to an action: 1. Ventilate the patient manually. 2. Switch the machine off and on again. 3. Cancel the self test. 4. Check the vaporizer setting. 5. Close all flow controls (except O2), and run 100% O2. If the breathing bag does not fill with fresh gas or manual ventilation is not possible: check the oxygen supply; open cylinder valves if necessary If fresh gas is still not delivered: close all flow controls disconnect patient from workstation and use another device turn workstation off
