Southern Arkansas University 2011 Mulerider Football WEDNESDAY, SEPTEMBER 21, 2011 HTTP://WWW.MULERIDERATHLETICS.COM Southern Arkansas University Muleriders (1-2, 1-2 GAC) @ #5 Valdosta State University Blazers (3-0, 0-0 GSC) WHEN: SEPTEMBER 24, 2011 WHERE: VALDOSTA, GA. @ BAZEMORE-HYDER STADIUM KICKOFF: 6:00 P.M. The Series (12-3, Valdosta State) Saturday s game between Southern Arkansas and Valdosta State is the 16th consecutive meeting of the two teams since their first game in 1996 in Valdosta, Ga. The Blazers shut out the Muleriders 42-0 that day behind All-America quarterback Lance Funderburk. The next season, SAU defeated VSU 17-7 en route to a Gulf South Conference championship. In 1998, Southern Arkansas won by a 40-13 margin, and made it three in a row the next year with a 28-14 decision in Valdosta, concluding the Muleriders only wins in the series, and obviously, their longest streak. Valdosta State has won the last 11 meetings, starting in 2000 as a 5-5 SAU team was nipped at the final buzzer, 30-29. The Blazers breezed to a 41-14 win over Southern Arkansas in 2001, eked out a 31-28 decision in 2002, came from behind in the last four minutes to claim a 41-17 win in 2003, outscored the Muleriders 45-28 in 2004 en route to the NCAA Division II national championship, claimed a hard-earned, come-from-behind 44-41 cliffhanger in 2005, and won 41-7 in Valdosta the next season. VSU continued its winning streak the next two years in Magnolia, coming in as the fifth-ranked team in the nation in 2007 to pull out a 33-21 victory on its way again to the national championship, and winning 38-16 in 2008. They secured a 32-7 victory two years ago in Valdosta, before claiming their 11th consecutive win in a 27-0 shutout last season in Magnolia. Holding a 12-3 advantage in the series, Valdosta State has a 6-1 edge in games played in Valdosta and a 6-2 margin in Magnolia. The Coaches Hired as the 19th head coach at Southern Arkansas in December 2008, Bill Keopple (Central Arkansas, 1982) is in his third season with the Muleriders, where he is 5-18 overall. He previously had spent six years as head coach at Arkansas High School in Texarkana, compiling a 44-26-1 record, five consecutive state playoff appearances, two 6A South Conference titles, and 6A state championships in 2006 and 2007. In 1996 he served as athletic director and head coach at Newport High School, guiding the Greyhounds to the state playoffs in an 8-3 season, giving him an overall mark of 52-29-1 in his seven years at the high school level. Keopple has 18 years of experience as an assistant in the collegiate ranks. He spent the 2002 season on former Arkansas defensive coordinator Keith Burn s staff at Tulsa, coaching the defensive line and serving as recruiting coordinator. He served two years under Houston Nutt at Arkansas in 1998 and 1999, and was with Nutt at Boise State in 1997, coaching the defensive line at both schools. Keopple was an honorable mention All-District and All-AIC selection for Central Arkansas and got his start there as a graduate assistant in 1982. He spent 14 years with the Bears coaching the offensive line and was offensive coordinator from 1990-95. David Dean (Georgia State, 1986) is 39-11 overall in his fifth season as head of the Valdosta State program. Quite productive in his inaugural year, he led his 2007 squad to a 13-1 mark and the Division II National Championship. That was followed by a 9-3 mark in 2008 as the Blazers advanced to the second round of the playoffs, and made it to NCAA post-season play for the third time in four years last season. Dean had previously been the offensive coordinator at Valdosta State since 2000. Prior to joining the Blazer staff, Dean served from 1992-99 as an assistant coach at West Georgia, the last two of which was spent as the Wolves offensive coordinator. He began his collegiate career at VSU in 1988 with a four-year stint as wide receivers coach. Dean also was wide receivers coach at Avondale (Ga.) High School during the 1987 season and spent the 1986 school year as a graduate assistant coach at Georgia Tech. He was a walk-on at Georgia Tech in 1982 and earned a scholarship the following year, playing wide receiver for the Yellow Jackets through 1985. VS. Mulerider Football History Southern Arkansas has had a football program for 101 years (1911), but will have to wait until the 2017 season to truly commemorate 100 years of Mulerider football. SAU didn t field a team from 1937-1939 and 1942-1945, a total of seven years, making 2011 the 94th football season at Southern Arkansas. SAU was founded in 1909 as the Third District Agricultural School, with G.R. Turrentine serving as the inaugural head coach in 1911. The team played only two games that first year, losing both in Magnolia by shutouts, 19-0 to Texarkana (Texas) High School and 9-0 to Camden High School. The team was commonly called the Magnolia Aggies until the early 1920 s, but Turrentine, who went on to coach for a total of seven years, is credited with providing the moniker of Muleriders following the team s final game of the 1912 season, a Thanksgiving date at Fordyce High School. A few days after that game, members of the team rode mules to Coach Turrentine s home to discuss their final game and he greeted them with My Mule Riders. That was the first known time the term was used, and the name eventually stuck, changing from two words to the compound Muleriders. SAU is now 427-408-30 in 94 years of football since its first season of play in 1911, and did not field teams from 1937-1939 and 1942-1945. The Muleriders are currently 1-2 in Great American Conference games in its inaugural season. All-time, they are 192-194- 11 against teams currently in the GAC. Bill Keopple enters his third season as head football coach at Southern Arkansas, hired in December 2008 as the 19th coach to lead the Muleriders. Keopple has accumulated 27 years of coaching experience, including his first stint as a head coach on the collegiate level at SAU. He served 18 years as an assistant in the college ranks with stops at Tulsa, Arkansas, Boise State and Central Arkansas. Prior to coming to Southern Arkansas, Keopple served six years (2003-2008) as head coach at Arkansas High School in Texarkana. His teams were 44-26-1 during his six seasons, advancing to the state playoffs the last five and winning consecutive state championships in 2006 and 2007. Keopple s 2005 and 2006 Razorback teams were 6A South Conference champions. He was honored in 2006 as the 6A State Farm Coach of the Year, as well as 6A Outstanding Coach by the National Football Foundation in both 2006 and 2007, and was selected to serve on the Arkansas high school football All- Star coaching staffs in 2004 and 2007. Before taking over the reins at Texarkana, Keopple was at the University of Tulsa in 2002 on former Arkansas defensive coordinator Keith Burns staff. He spent that season coaching the defensive line and serving as recruiting coordinator for the Golden Hurricane. Keopple served as an assistant under Houston Nutt at Arkansas in 1998 and 1999, and was with Nutt at Boise State in 1997, coaching the defensive line at both schools. The Razorbacks were 1998 SEC Western Division champions, finishing 9-3 and playing Michigan in the Citrus Bowl. Arkansas had the fifth-ranked rushing defense in the nation that season and was ranked seventh in total defense. The 1999 Razorbacks went 8-4 and defeated Texas in the Cotton Bowl, finishing the season 12th in rushing defense and 17th in total defense. Keopple went to Boise State from Newport High School where he was head coach and athletic director in 1996. He guided the Greyhounds to the state playoffs in an 8-3 season, giving him an overall mark of 52-29-1 in his seven years as a head coach on the high school level. HEAD COACH...Personal Info. Most likely, the clubs won t face each other again anytime soon after Saturday s game. Surprisingly, this weekend s match-up with the Blazers makes them Southern Arkansas current second longest tenured opponent as far as consecutive games played, reaching 16 straight. On their schedule this year, the Muleriders have only played Arkansas-Monticello for a longer streak, reaching 23 games when they host the Boll Weevils November 5. * After opening the season in the inaugural year of the Great American Conference with its first three games against league opponents, SAU now has three consecutive games against its old Gulf South brethren. After the Valdosta State game, Southern Arkansas will host North Alabama on October 1 before traveling to take on West Alabama October 8. As part of the six Arkansas institutions defections from the GSC to the GAC came an exit agreement that they would each play three Gulf South opponents this year. * Trips to Valdosta State have generally not been pleasant ones for the Muleriders as they ve come out on top only once in seven tries, a 28-14 decision in 1999, and averaging 16 points per game over those seven contests to VSU s 35.
