Darling Marilyns, Please read this fabulous document. It will give you all the information you need about how to transform yourself into Marilyn and will explain exactly what to expect on swim day. Whilst we will help you to prepare in any way we can please bear in mind that we organise the Marilyn Jetty Swim as volunteers, whilst also juggling young children, work and marriage! We ask that you use this document and our website - www.themarilyns.org - as your first port of call for any questions you have and please reserve contacting us for anything that isn t explained here. It is vital for our cause, community and branding, that Marilyns adhere to our dress code and wear the approved signature Marilyn wig, white Marilyn swimsuit and dress style. Thank you darlings x Where do I get my Marilyn costume? Wigs: If this is the first time you have been a Marilyn your registration fee covers the cost of your wig. Sarah Tinney (swim Marilyns) or Sally Day (shore Marilyns) will organise your wig for you. If you do not yet have your wig please contact Sarah Tinney (0432 541157) and she will organise one for you. If you have been a Marilyn before you should already have a wig, if not please contact Sarah Tinney. Please ensure that you have picked up your wig before swim day as things tend to be busy on the day! It is useful to try it on and have a little play at styling it before the swim. If you are wearing a wig from a previous year you can wash them with fabric softner or condition them a little to freshen them up. White bathing suits if you are a swim Marilyn: Sarah Tinney has a range of white bathing suits available for sale. Please contact Sarah to organise a time to try one on. If you would like to source your own suit please remember it needs to be all white and have a halter neck. All Marilyns need to wear white bathing suits as opposed to white bikinis. You may also wear a plain white sarong around your waist if you are feeling modest. Please see our website for images on how the suit should look. http://www.themarilyns.org/look/ White Marilyn dress if you are a shore Marilyn: Costume Land have a range of Marilyn dresses for hire and for sale from $40-$90. All the Marilyns come together for a fun morning of Marilyn transformation, photographs and making new friends. This is Sarah Tinney s family home so please take care to stay downstairs to give the children and pets their own space! Is there anywhere to park? As it is the day of the Brighton Jetty Classic Brighton tends to be busy. There is limited parking available on Yester Avenue and on surrounding roads. If there is any possibility of car sharing or getting somebody to drop you off this is a great idea. What time should I arrive? You will have selected a Lips and Flicks make-up application time; this is your arrival time. Please arrive on time so we can ensure our team are able to help you. With 100 Marilyns to create it is a busy morning for the make-up artists and you don t want to miss your slot. If you are driving allow extra time to park and walk to Yester Avenue, as it can be busy on swim day. 2
Do I need to arrive dressed as Marilyn? Please arrive with your Marilyn costume, white sarong (if you are wearing one) and any bling you are wearing already on. This saves a lot of time and helps the morning run more smoothly. Obviously you may not feel comfortable coming dressed as Marilyn if you have a long way to walk or are getting public transport! Consider putting your swim suit on under normal clothes so it is easy to get ready when you arrive. Remember any jewellery you choose to wear will get wet in the water! Make-up: please apply your own make-up base (concealer/ foundation/ powder), blusher and bronzer, before you arrive. Please bring your own waterproof mascara for you to apply after the make-up artists have completed your eyeliner flick and beauty spot. Then use the lipstick bar to apply the perfect shade of Marilyn red lipstick (provided at the bar). If you have your own lipstick make sure it is the right red (not too orange and not too pink). See our video for hints on making yourself up as Marilyn http://www.themarilyns.org/look/ Hair: If you have long hair it is much easier to put your wig on if you put it back in a plait/ plaits or a low, loose bun. Timing anklet (swim Marilyns only): On arrival at Sarah s house you will be greeted and checked off our registration list. We will give you a timing anklet and assist you in putting it on the correct ankle. It is essential that you wear this until the end of the swim and so the Brighton Surf Life Saving club can account for all swimmers in the water. Fundraising tins (shore Marilyns only): Sally Day will organise a fundraising donation bucket for each shore Marilyn on the morning of the swim. These can be collected from the Cancer Council tent after we have paraded down together. This will be just to the North of the Jetty on the Esplanade. Sally will suggest teams and locations for fundraising while the swim Marilyns are in the water. Remember mini Marilyns need to be with an adult while they are fundraising so teams will need to stick together. All shore Marilyns will need to return back to the Cancer Council tent with their buckets around the time the swim Marilyns are getting out of the water. What do I need to bring with me? Please bring your wig (clearly labelled with your name), Your Aussie Flag swim ring (red, white and blue) if you are using one (again labelled with your name). Please inflate your swim ring before you arrive it is very difficult to inflate your swim ring after your red lippy has been applied without spreading it attractively around your face! You can buy your swim ring from major retailers, souveniur shops and sporting goods stores. 3

Please note that disposable towels are provided free of charge when you get out of the water so there is no need to bring a towel Is there anywhere to leave my belongings while I swim? There is an area under the gazebo in the garden behind an unlocked gate at Sarah s house where you can leave any non-valuable items if you wish. The castle itself is locked when we leave to parade down to the beach so please don t leave anything inside the house as you may not be able to get back in until later in the day. Please avoid bringing any valuable belongings/ watches/ jewellery/ expensive sunglasses. with you as we are unable to look after them for you while you swim. Instead opt for inexpensive sunglasses as they may get damaged You can always give your family/ friends/ spectators anything you think you will need immediately after the swim. What happens on swim day? The day begins with a mass Marilyn transformation at Sarah s house. There will be a professional photographer at the house taking photos. These may be used for promotional purposes. It is your responsibility to keep away from the camera if you don t want your image to be used for promotional purposes. Once everyone is ready you will need to bring your inflated swim ring with you. We will all parade down Brighton Jetty Road with the Royal Navy Band to the Cancer Council SA tent on The Esplanade near the start line. Here we will all put on sunscreen. We will then walk together to the stage area on The Esplanade. Sarah, Sarah and Shelley will say a few words about why we are swimming We then walk to the swim start line on the beach. Prior to going down the steps to the beach, swim Marilyns can now take your shoes and sunnies off and place in the trays provided by our MJS Crew. These will be available for collection at the Cancer Council tent to collect after the swim. Brighton Surf Life Saving club will talk everyone through the swim. It is a 400m course that starts on the south side of the jetty. You swim out, round the end of the jetty and back down to the beach on the north side of the jetty. If you are a shore Marilyn please walk around the crowds raising money for the Cancer Council while the swim Marilyns swim. After the swim we all fundraise around the beach/ esplanade and life-saving club until midday. We invite all Marilyns and their supporters for a celebratory drink at the surf life-saving club at 12.00noon. Please bring money to pay for your drinks if you would like to join us. If you are swimming ask one of your spectators to look after your money for you, as we don t have a provision for this. If you don t have spectators pin a couple of notes inside your bathing costume! Can I bring spectators and family with me on the day? Please avoid bringing family/ children/ spectators to Sarah s house in the morning. With 100 Marilyns, make-up artists and photographers, we are sorry, there isn t room for extra people. Bring as many spectators as you like to the swim, they will just need to amuse themselves in Brighton while you are getting ready at Sarah s house or they can come down to the beach later for the start of the swim at 9.30am. There is always plenty to do and see on swim day and many cafes in Brighton where spectators can get refreshments. Unfortunately, there is no crèche or childcare provision so please bring somebody with you to look after your children if you are bringing them. 5
