Introduction Mixed doubles is a doubles game where a male partners a female. Most pairs will use this same strategy where the male will cover the rear court to do the attacking while the female takes care of the front court to set up the rally for her partner and to intercept any floating shots. I am going to show you 3 drills that will improve your mixed doubles play. If you are not use to these training methods, start slowly and do not overdo it as you might get injured. Upped the pace and sets only when you are ready and fitter. All the best! Player A s shots Player A s movement The feeder s shuttle direction Copyright 2008 www.badmintom-information.com Page 3
Drills 1: Drill (Smashing and Driving) - The feeder will stand slightly in front of player A in this drill to throw the shuttle. The shuttle should be thrown to 4 corners of the court which is the rear court and the middle court. However, the shuttle thrown to the mid court should be flat to the shoulder level of player A so that player will able to drive the shuttle. -Player A will have to smash the shuttle at the rear court and straight away rush to the midcourt to drive the shuttle given. These steps should also be repeated in the other side of the court. - The benefit of this drill is to sharpen the attacking and follow up skills. In doubles, player must be able to have good smashing and driving skills in order to dominate the game. After the smash, most players will drive the shuttle if they can t follow up with their smash anymore in order to maintain their attacking position. -This drill is the most applicable for mixed doubles player who are covering the rear court as they have to maintain the attacking in the game. -20 shuttles x 6 sets (30 seconds rest between each set) Copyright 2008 www.badmintom-information.com Page 4
Drills 2: Net & Drive Drill -The feeder in this drill will randomly serve to 2 sides of the court which is the mid side of the court. Player A will randomly touch 2 sides of the net and wait for the feeder to serve the shuttle to the side court. -Player A will have to drive every single shuttle given by the feeder. Feeder should serve the shuttle after player A touches the net so that player A will have to recover as fast as possible to the center court and get ready to anticipate any shots. -In the game the female player will at most time take care of the front court to anticipate and to set up the rally for her partner to attack. In order to play well at the front court, players have to be fast enough to cover the court. -This drill will benefit the player by helping them move fast at the front court and to anticipate any shots in the game. -20 shuttles x 6 sets (30 seconds rest between each set) Copyright 2008 www.badmintom-information.com Page 5
Drills 3: Front Anticipation Multiple Drill -Feeder will serve the shuttle randomly to the front court. However, this time the feeder will increase the shuttle pace while serving so as a result the shuttle will all go to the back court. -Player A will have to anticipate every shuttle given by the feeder. He/she will have to keep the racket up in order to anticipate the shots because the shuttle is going very fast. Player A will have to move fast as well in order to intercept all the shots. -This drill will benefit the player by improving the hand speed as well as the speed at the front court. In a competitive game, the front player plays a big role in anticipating any floating shots in order to finish off the rally fast. -A fast wristwork and reflex are needed to cover and intercept the shots at the front court. This drill is also applicable to normal doubles play. - 20 shuttles x 6 sets (30 seconds rest between each set) Copyright 2008 www.badmintom-information.com Page 6
