Back Judge s Quiz 2009 1. If you have not been contacted by U concerning travel/meeting site at least 2 days prior to the game, call (T) (F) (Reference) call U, R or other crew member for information. Call supervisor of officials when you are unable to contact U, R or other crew member. 2. It s the responsibility of the BJ to ensure he has an accurate timing devise before the game. (T) (F) (Reference) 3. The BJ is responsible for checking with the game clock operator only to advise him of the official time. (T) (F) (Reference) 4. It is the responsibility of the BJ to mark all approved game balls. (T) (F) (Reference) 5. Escort team on the L J s sideline onto the field of play before the game & at halftime. (T) (F) (Reference) 6. Take a position on K s free kick line on HL s sideline. (T) (F) (Reference) 7. During a Free Kick, the BJ should watch for first touching by K, and mark the spot with a (T) (F) (Reference) beanbag if first touching occurs. 8. During a Free Kick, count the K players, and confirm the count with the L J. (T) (F) (Reference) 9. After the play, secure the correct ball to be used once the new series is declared and get it to the U/R. Set (T) (F) (Reference) up in your position. 10. During a scrimmage down, always take a position as deep as the deepest defensive back favoring the (T) (F) (Reference) side of the formation of "A" with the most receivers. 11. Count B players; give signal to R. This should be early as possible to allow R time to focus on other keys (T) (F) (Reference) 12. The BJ is responsible for the end line only during pass plays. (T) (F) (Reference) 13. The BJ is not responsible for the end line if the LJ or the HL asks for help on a spot during a (T) (F) (Reference) scrimmage play near the goal-line. LJ or HL will take responsibility of the end line. 14. On running plays, observe initial line charge, watching for illegal blocks by wide receivers; observe (T) (F) (Reference) action in B s secondary and action in front of the runner.

15. On short pass plays be in position to assist the side officials if required. (T) (F) (Reference) 16. Be in position to rule on forward progress on long scrimmage plays. (T) (F) (Reference) 17. On goal line plays when ball snapped on or inside B s 5 yd. line. If asked by side official, and acknowledged (T) (F) (Reference) by you, rule on forward progress from your position to location of snap. Side official takes responsibility for end line. 18. On a punt, take a position on the HL side of the field, outside of and approximately even with the deepest (T) (F) (Reference) receiver. 19. Responsible for ruling on fair catch. When fair catch is made, immediately sound whistle and signal time out. (T) (F) (Reference) When fair catch is not made stay with ball until kick ends. 20. During a punt, the BJ is responsible for action on the receiver and Kick Catch Interference, and should (T) (F) (Reference) always beanbag the end of the kick by possession (PSK spot) from sideline to sideline. 21. During a punt, if a kick goes out of bounds in the air, choose a spot that most closely approximates where (T) (F) (Reference) the ball crossed out of bounds, and give the time out signal. 22. During a punt, when a ball is dead, remain at the spot where play ends. Communicate with R the status (T) (F) (Reference) of the ball and result of the play. When released by R, get appropriate ball to the U/R to be spotted. 23. Ball snapped from R s 15 and in: take a position behind upright on the HL s side of field. (T) (F) (Reference) 24. The BJ is responsible for your upright, crossbar, including any ball contact on that section. (T) (F) (Reference) 25. On FG s and Try s when there is a run or pass, the BJ is responsible only for his half of the end line. (T) (F) (Reference) 26. After Field Goals & Tries, BJ retrieves ball for next down and relays to R. (T) (F) (Reference) 27. After a successful try, the BJ on signal with the HL should inform the coaches that the players are needed (T) (F) (Reference) on the field, and should then clear the side line and move to the free kick position. 28. As BJ you do not have to clear the sideline on your way to your free kick position after a try or field goal. (T) (F) (Reference) 29. At end of second quarter, BJ should note time and record on card, report same to all officials. Make sure (T) (F) (Reference) the ECO has put 2 minutes on the scoreboard clock.

30. It is not the responsibility of the BJ to time halftime. (T) (F) (Reference) 31. If on a measurement R signals first down, BJ marks the spot for the box and return to your position. (T) (F) (Reference) 32. After first and third quarters, with R and U, mark card with down, distance, yard line, and clip for the team (T) (F) (Reference) in possession. 33. During Penalty Enforcement, cover side of field that is covered by reporting official. (T) (F) (Reference) 34. During Penalty Enforcement, watch for team actions and be alert for substitutions, team attendants on field, (T) (F) (Reference) and player-coach conferences. 35. Time Outs: Notify the R when 45 seconds of the time out have elapsed by sounding your whistle. (T) (F) (Reference) 36. When there is a flag, R gets the official who threw the flag and asks the status of (T) (F) (Reference) the ball, type of play, team committing the foul, number of player, and results of play. 37. Anytime the ball is snapped from outside the 15 yd. Line on a field goal, the LJ (T) (F) (Reference) and BJ should be under the goal post. 38. The R should review the game card as part of the post-game conference. (T) (F) (Reference) 39. The R shall conduct a pre-game conference and distribute game cards. If he (T) (F) (Reference) is not present, it is the HL responsibility to replace him. 40. At the end of the game, it is the R responsibility to record the time the game ended. (T) (F) (Reference) 41. Before the kick off, the U confirms the kicking team count with the BJ. (T) (F) (Reference) 42. The R is the only official to call the supervisor of officials with the details of a disqualification. (T) (F) (Reference) 43. After a try or successful FG, move to the 25 yard line nearest the goal line where the try was (T) (F) (Reference) attempted or FG was made. 44. On a measurement HL should observe the team on his side lines prior to taking the chain crew (T) (F) (Reference) out for a measurement. 45. On signal from LJ after a score move up to a free kick position and inform the coach that players (T) (F) (Reference) are needed on the field.

46. HL does not have any player counting responsibilities because the R and U counts (T) (F) (Reference) the A players and LJ and BJ count B players. 47. On free kicks signal to R by raising hand that you are ready, after you have counted the "R" players. (T) (F) (Reference) 48. Counts players of the defense and give count signal to R. (T) (F) (Reference) 49. On goal line plays when the ball is snapped on or inside B s 3 yd. line, LG communicates to BJ or U if you want (T) (F) (Reference) them to rule on forward progress from their position to the location of snap. The request must be acknowledged and accepted by BJ or U. Move to goal line after snap to determine progress when necessary. 50. Assist BJ ruling on fair catch signal. Observe action of signaler when no fair catch is made. Bean bag (T) (F) (Reference) any first touching observed. 51. LJ accompanies captain(s) to the center of the field. (T) (F) (Reference) 52. 62. As LJ for field goals and trys: we should sound whistle when the attempt is ended. Confer with (T) (F) (Reference) BJ, step forward and give proper signal. 63. On a short free kick towards the HL sideline touched by "R", wait for the Referee to wind the clock and give a follow up wind the clock signal. (T) (F) (Reference) 64. The supervisor of officials is responsible for getting you your game assignments (T) (F) (Reference) 65. All officials are to mark their game cards with disqualifying information.
