PREVIEWING AY'S GAME S A SECTION How can a tipster be expected to select a winner in this topsy turvy season? Marcellin, battling to avoid relegation, easily accounted for an inaccurate Uni Blues, who have been riding high for most of the season Uni Blacks, perhaps the unlucky side of the competition, tossed the ebuiient North O B to give themselves an outside chance for the Final Four St Bernard's kept their finals chance alive with a comfortable win over Old Scotch, who have continued their slump in form Ivanhoe were too strong for Caulfield and they know they have to keep winning to hold their position whilst Caulfield are in deep trouble as far as relegation is concerned De La Salle consolidated their opportunity for the double chance by defeating Ormond, who are also in the hot seat as far as relegation is involved Two games to go and the double chance, the final four and relegation all still wide open How interesting can a competition be With great trepidation and absolutely no confidence I will try to pick a winner this week Old Scotch meet Uni Blues in a match which will be very much do or die for Old Scotch They are unfortunate they are meeting Blues who will be smarting from the defeat by Marceilin Salter (coach, Uni Blues) will have his team hungry for a victory and I believe they will be too brilliant for the fast-fading Old Scotch St Bernard's clash with Ormond at home St Bernard's still have a hope for a place In the Four, whilst Ormond will be desperate, for another loss leaves them right in the "Relegation Stakes" This match is sure to be a typical dour, hard struggle but I'm tipping St Bernard's home ground advantage to be the decisive factor in their favour De La Salle clash with Ivanhoe in yet another game which will determine the positions of teams in the Four Both teams know they must win to maintain their respective positions De La Salle have a stronger forward line and a more brilliant team overall and should win but this is a game In which an upset would be no surprise However I'm tipping De La Salle to take the points Marcellin meet North O B at home and who could say they were not a good chance to defeat the Northerners after their fine defeat of Uni Blues and North's poor form against Uni Blacks Marcellin have shown their best form too late and must be a good chance to win this one The pressure will be right on North in this game and I believe they will respond accordingly and take the points One is tempted to say the only sure winner in this round is Uni Blacks but turn-ups have been more than common this year than certain results and Caulfield Grammarians need to cause another Uni Blacks have been the unlucky side for the year with a controversia l Page 6 draw and some very close defeats They still have an outside chance for the Four and I'm certain they won't fritter it away to day I'm tipping Uni Blues, St Bernard's, De La Salle, North O B and Uni Blacks-- MICHAEL ARNOLD B SECTION "What you see is what you get" That's my opinion of the "B" Grade four at the moment Anything can happen in football of course, but I will be very surprised if there are any changes in this line up before the fine is Old Haiieybury proved last week that they are not going to lose that precious fourth spot without a king size struggle Today they travel to The Harry Trott to take on Collegians The Collegian boys put a halt to their run of outs with a good win over Coburg last Saturday I'll bet everyone at Collegians breathed a sigh of relief Today's game will, I believe, be a different story Old Haileyburians must come through their fifth hard game in a row with a win to secure their place in the finals Last week's great win over Old Paradians justified my faith in them and I feel they will win today's game in the same manne r Fawkner meet Old Trinity at Fawkner Last week's loss to Parkside has made Fawkner's finals hopes look very slim, but they must keep winning to keep that faint hope alive Their fate seems to rest with the performances of Halleybury Old Trinity put up a great show against Monash Blues last week and will present Fawkner with a real battle I think the motivation behind the Fawkner camp is stronger and this should give them the win they so desperately need Old Melburnians, fresh after last week's rest are poised for the final run home which should take them to "A" Grade Today they host Monash Blues at Fawkner Park This game could not come at a worse time for the "Blues" They have struggled home for the narrowest of wins in their last two games Today should see their bubble burst Monash will be desperate and will give it everything they have but I cannot see them winning in enough positions to topple the leaders I'll go for O Ms In the final game we see a very confident Parkside journey across to Coburg The "Red Devils" had a very important win over traditional rivals and friends, Fawkner, last week and their hopes for "A" Grade are sky high Coburg were jumped early by Collegians but fought on well and could be a very real danger, if Parkside take this game too lightly The Coburg ground has brought many a good Parkside team down and if they are not careful they could be in for a nasty shock I'll stay with the form team Parkside N R ) Ormond congratulated fly-weight rover Max Brook on his 50th game (Max went on to represent Victoria and win an A section B&F N R ) Peter Bennett's 9 goals for Collegians against Ivanhoe took him to 66 for the season All at Therry Corpus Christi Old Boys join in congratulating both Chris Bye and Alan Ross, who played their 50th consecutive games in the Seniors last week Chris has thrilled Therry's spectators with his high marking and long kicking, while Alan's clever play on the wing has left many opponents floundering Once again, well done Chris and Alan, and hope the next fifty are as well played Page 14 BALL BRIEFS ST KILDA CB COC "200 CLUB" GETS NEW MEMBE R All at St Kilda CB CO C join in congratulating Kevin "Ox" White on reaching his 200th game last Saturday Kevin played his first game against Geelong in the Reserves at the tender age of 14 but rapidly gained a place in the Juniors in 1968, from which he graduated to the ist XVIII in 1969 Since then he has had an outstanding career as the club's No 1 ruckman He was captain in 1974, 75 and 76 and vice-captain in 77 and 78 He won the club's best and fairest award in 1975 and was runner up in the VA F A C Grade award in the same year and this year achieved the ambition of every amateur player in that he represented his State against Tasmania A strong but fair player and a fine mark, he has been a great example to all at St Kilda and we hope that he will give his brother's 300 games a nudge HUGHIE'S HUNDRED St Bernard's Football Club congratulates John Hughes on playing his 100th game John commenced his career in 1972 with the Juniors Being a bench warming specialist but a dedicated clubman, he was rewarded with a place in the Junior One premiership team of that year Being small of stature John found it difficult to clinch a place in Senior football but with great dedication to training has found a permanent niche in the Reserves and played in the 1975 premiership team John has also served the club well off the field, on the committee and this year is a very popular and hard working Secretary The eldest of six brothers all of whom have played games with Old Boys teams the Hughes family have much to be proud of -
