PREVIEWING AY'S GAME S A SECTION How can a tipster be expected to select a winner in this topsy turvy season? Marcellin, battling to avoid relegation, easily accounted for an inaccurate Uni Blues, who have been riding high for most of the season Uni Blacks, perhaps the unlucky side of the competition, tossed the ebuiient North O B to give themselves an outside chance for the Final Four St Bernard's kept their finals chance alive with a comfortable win over Old Scotch, who have continued their slump in form Ivanhoe were too strong for Caulfield and they know they have to keep winning to hold their position whilst Caulfield are in deep trouble as far as relegation is concerned De La Salle consolidated their opportunity for the double chance by defeating Ormond, who are also in the hot seat as far as relegation is involved Two games to go and the double chance, the final four and relegation all still wide open How interesting can a competition be With great trepidation and absolutely no confidence I will try to pick a winner this week Old Scotch meet Uni Blues in a match which will be very much do or die for Old Scotch They are unfortunate they are meeting Blues who will be smarting from the defeat by Marceilin Salter (coach, Uni Blues) will have his team hungry for a victory and I believe they will be too brilliant for the fast-fading Old Scotch St Bernard's clash with Ormond at home St Bernard's still have a hope for a place In the Four, whilst Ormond will be desperate, for another loss leaves them right in the "Relegation Stakes" This match is sure to be a typical dour, hard struggle but I'm tipping St Bernard's home ground advantage to be the decisive factor in their favour De La Salle clash with Ivanhoe in yet another game which will determine the positions of teams in the Four Both teams know they must win to maintain their respective positions De La Salle have a stronger forward line and a more brilliant team overall and should win but this is a game In which an upset would be no surprise However I'm tipping De La Salle to take the points Marcellin meet North O B at home and who could say they were not a good chance to defeat the Northerners after their fine defeat of Uni Blues and North's poor form against Uni Blacks Marcellin have shown their best form too late and must be a good chance to win this one The pressure will be right on North in this game and I believe they will respond accordingly and take the points One is tempted to say the only sure winner in this round is Uni Blacks but turn-ups have been more than common this year than certain results and Caulfield Grammarians need to cause another Uni Blacks have been the unlucky side for the year with a controversia l Page 6 draw and some very close defeats They still have an outside chance for the Four and I'm certain they won't fritter it away to day I'm tipping Uni Blues, St Bernard's, De La Salle, North O B and Uni Blacks-- MICHAEL ARNOLD B SECTION "What you see is what you get" That's my opinion of the "B" Grade four at the moment Anything can happen in football of course, but I will be very surprised if there are any changes in this line up before the fine is Old Haiieybury proved last week that they are not going to lose that precious fourth spot without a king size struggle Today they travel to The Harry Trott to take on Collegians The Collegian boys put a halt to their run of outs with a good win over Coburg last Saturday I'll bet everyone at Collegians breathed a sigh of relief Today's game will, I believe, be a different story Old Haileyburians must come through their fifth hard game in a row with a win to secure their place in the finals Last week's great win over Old Paradians justified my faith in them and I feel they will win today's game in the same manne r Fawkner meet Old Trinity at Fawkner Last week's loss to Parkside has made Fawkner's finals hopes look very slim, but they must keep winning to keep that faint hope alive Their fate seems to rest with the performances of Halleybury Old Trinity put up a great show against Monash Blues last week and will present Fawkner with a real battle I think the motivation behind the Fawkner camp is stronger and this should give them the win they so desperately need Old Melburnians, fresh after last week's rest are poised for the final run home which should take them to "A" Grade Today they host Monash Blues at Fawkner Park This game could not come at a worse time for the "Blues" They have struggled home for the narrowest of wins in their last two games Today should see their bubble burst Monash will be desperate and will give it everything they have but I cannot see them winning in enough positions to topple the leaders I'll go for O Ms In the final game we see a very confident Parkside journey across to Coburg The "Red Devils" had a very important win over traditional rivals and friends, Fawkner, last week and their hopes for "A" Grade are sky high Coburg were jumped early by Collegians but fought on well and could be a very real danger, if Parkside take this game too lightly The Coburg ground has brought many a good Parkside team down and if they are not careful they could be in for a nasty shock I'll stay with the form team Parkside for a win but I feel a bit edgey about this one Old Paradians after a magnificent run of successes finally went down to Old Halleyburians I thought this was on O H are a side THE AMATEUR FOOTBALLER - AUGUST 12, 197& that never believe they are beaten Today's bye will give Paradians a chance to recoup for next week's big clash with Parkside Selections : Old Haileyburians, Fawkner, Old Melburnians, Parkside - BRIAN LAUDER Kew have improved in recent weeks and will be far too strong for a struggling Old Ivanhoe at Ivanhoe today Selections : A J AX, Geelong, Old Xavarfans, Old Brighton, Kew - JIM FIDGE C SECTIO N D SECTIO N Highlights of round sixteen were Geelong's impressive 39 point win over A J A X and Old Congratulations to University High School Xaverians crushing defeat of Alphington Old-Boys, Elsternwick and the State Bankers Geelong, after 7 games in third piece, has at whose victories last week have assured an last progressed up the ladder - a patient wait Alfred Hitchcock suspense ending to the D for a team that during that period has not lost Section season Only Powerhouse is assured a game Geelong's win over A J of a final's game AX last week At the other end of the records for it consecutive wins over every team ladder the relegation question still has to be in the section answered Heatherton, whose form has been inconsistent, visit Melbourne High School Old Boys But while Geelong are now second, a win for St Kilda against AJ:A X today and a loss The home side will be anxious to regain its for Geelong against Old Xaverians next Saturday could see St lost horizon of the top four I can't see Kilda regain second spot Heatherton players nullifying the Melbourne Old Xaverians has also shown tremendous High forwards Martin and Adams sufficiently to consistency A poor first half was that side's hold the home side to a losing score Melbourne High should win and keep their final's handicap against AJ A X two weeks ago Form would not indicate Old Xaverians dropping out aspirations alive of the four; however they face danger games The enigmatic Old Camberwell Grammarians at Hampton today and Geelong at home next visit the narrow confines of Elsternwick's week The other contender for fourth place, ground The home side produced form which Old Brighton, could sneak into the four by many observers believe has remained dormant winning both its games (Old Carey and Kew), on many winter Saturday afternoons Old Camberwell failed at Albert Park last week Poten- should Xaverians drop both their games I tip this unlikely to occur Today Old Brighton at home will allow Old Carey little latitude tially they are a stronger side than Elsternwick Their forwards have averaged nearly and run out winners while Old ten points more each game than have their Xaverlans will be too accomplished Elsternwick for Hampton Rovers counterparts At the other end of the ground Elsternwick defenders have had The main one today is between certain finalists St Kilda Old Collegians and A JA X If against them than the Old Camberwell Gram- an average of five more goals per match kicked the game was at Albert Park there is little marian defenders doubt Logically I should select AJA X would win However, the contest the visitors However the narrow ground plus must be considered differently as it is to be Eisternwick's close checking, vigorous style, I played out at North Road believe, will nullify the visitors sufficiently for The Geeiong-AJ A X clash last week was one Elsternwick to take the points of the finest games of Amateur football I've Now that State Bank has regained a top seen in years - particularly the first half when spot I believe they will succeed today against both teams played superbly, each trying in turn a disappointing West Brunswick Big name to take control of the game Players such as The Brennan's, Eacott, Wynd I cannot see AJ A and Webster will provide drive to the Bankers X being beaten twice in succession (The same could almost be said of For the "Moulting Magpies" Brockweil appears St Kilda ) The game will be loaded with pressure and astute coaches, Sid Myers (A J A X ) to be playing a lonely, consistent game I predict the Bankers will consolidate their percentage assets today and end the game with and Maude Bilston (St Kilda) will have their sides at "finals fever" pitch a credit balance on the score board The valiant University High School The AJ A Old Boys X boys will win and I recommend efforts to avoid relegation should be thwarted the game to followers - the contest shows today against second placed St Kevin's promise of being a classic Old Timer Les Radford continues to give St Kevin's Geelong, running along nicely, must now great drive Hannan, like his namesake, has beware of complacency, over-confidence or found gold, in the form of goals, which he anything similar Just because Alphington performed dismally last week does not mean they charges with the message that a big victory scores consistently Allan Olte will fire his will slump again today I know for one reason today will consolidate the double final chance that Alphington has been keenly looking forward to its first visit to Queen's Park since On June 17, Powerhouse overwhelmed Coun- St Kevin's are my selection to win 1970 - the club has geared itself up for the try Colleges Since then Powerhouse has continued on its successful path while the Colleges, occasion And Geelong's coach Laurie Degoidi is aware of the pitfalls of a casual approach ; after showing a flicker of light, have seen their Geelong cannot relax Alphington's determination will test Geelong but the Geelong machine, given the Colleges his best season yet (Ken light completely extinguished Ken Vipond has with an improved percentage and the additional is now in the mature years of his footballing stakes to hold second place, will run out life) However constant pressure from Bredyk winners and Perry today should see the wilt Around the packs Evans should pick up kicks against Dewan who does his best work away from the pack Despite my prejudices, (having been a member of both clubs) I must commit myself to a decision Powerhouse will appreciate the room to move the ball around the Western Oval Because of their overall strength I select Powerhouse to defeat Country Colleges Selections : Melbourne High School Old Boys, Elsternwick, State Bank, St Kevin's, Powerhouse - NORM NUGENT E SECTIO N The Four is now more certain St Bede's and Bulleen-Templestowe cannot be displaced from First and Second spots, respectively, whilst Beverley Hills, after their big win last Saturday, look to be safe in Third Fourth place is the only one still open, with the two possibilities taking a thrashing last week There certainly weren't any pretenders out at Buiieen- Tempiestowe when they ran rings round the Uni side Today, Bulleen-Templestowe travel to Mentone, and although Mentone had a better win than I'd expected last week, I doubt that this will be much more than a training run for the visitors Mentone are too inconsistent to trouble them Brunswick will be at home to La Trobe who will be looking for a big win It is now a possibility that percentage could play a major role in determining who occupies fourth spot on the ladder in two weeks time, and La Trobe will be out to make eve ry post a winner I'd like to be able to find a word of encouragement for Brunswick, but I'm afraid the pointers are too strong : La Trobe to win this one easily Beverley Hills demolished Old Geelong last week in no uncertain manner to virtually assure themselves of a place in the First Semi-Final Their best efforts this year have been at home, but even if today's game against AM P had been away, I still couldn't see them throwing away that finals position For A M P, the season is all but over, and they won't be putting much pressure on the home side A N Z Bank are at home to St Bede's who are now just marking time for the finals There seems to be no way that the Bankers will trouble St Bede's, and the only question looks to be : "By how much? " Old Geelong would have struggled to have beaten an egg for an omelette last week, let alone another football team, and today they face another difficult game North Brunswick are playing well and are not easy to beat at home Unless there's a big improvement in a dozen different departments, I can't see Old Geelong taking the points My selections : St Bede's, La Trobe, Beverley Hills, Bulleen-Templestowe, North Brunswick- PETER LEMON F SECTIO N National Bank at home to the Berries and if Bankers can run second to Monash Whites, as my jubilant friend stated, then I anticipate Berries first and daylight second The other thing my Monash friend told me was that the Whites would beat the Reds thi s Page 8 week Confidence is a big asset in football, providing it has the backing of a bit of heart and a little skill I'll give Monash the benefit of the doubt I have in this regard and keep my promise Whites to maintain hteir winning streak and I hope that Peter Nathan misses a few The Fitites will be at home to the Common Bankers and as this is the point at which the charge for promotion is critical I must go for the Bankers Falter here and you've had it I've nothing against the Fitites, in fact our acquaintance is of very long standing an encompassed grounds as far out as Deer Park Perhaps they need a couple of Perc Olivers in their team If Therry CC are to make an impression in the final series, it has to begin here, against Bulleen United, at home Win this and you have a show ; fail and you reach for the mothballs My opinion is that Buiieen is a good, well balanced side and will be a strong contender this year and probably next year as well I anticipate their fitness will enable them to win this Therefore my selections are Thornbury, MON- ASH WHITES, Commonwealth Bank, Bulleen United, Clayton the bye - SYD WHITFIELD JUNIOR SECTION 1 Ormond in, Ivanhoe out, that was the major result of last week's games North Old Boys tumbled to their second successive loss when the talented Uni Blues side suddenly discovered how to play pressure football, at least for half a game Today's games are full of interest Old Scotch (3rd) play North Old Boys (ist) and must win if they are to be sure of staying in the Four Scotch have played well in their recent home games, but, like Uni Blues, are inconsistent when away from home North are in a bit of a slump at the moment, but showed better form in the second half last week The game is at Scotch and I think the home side can win The other big game is the clash between Ivanhoe (5th) and Ormond (4th) Ormond are the form side of the moment and, again, last week showed that they are the team to beat for the Flag with a crushing win over Hampton Rovers Ivanhoe also performed well last week and look like they're coming back into form, but I can't see them winning at Ormond today St Bernard's have the opportunity today to move away from the relegation zone, again, with a win against Hampton Rovers They have a lot more to play for than Hampton who are just playing out the season St Bernard's to win Geelong are at home to Monash The home team are probably glad that this nightmare season is coming to an end They would no doubt love to snatch a win, but I think last week was their last real chance Monash will win easily Blues play Blacks at the Uni and if anyone thinks that this will be a tame affair then they don't understand the intense rivalry that exists between the two Uni sides Winning these games is second only to winning a Grand Fina l for the players on both sides and anything can happen It's a very important game for both sides and I think Blues can scrape home Selections : Old Scotch, Ormond, St Bernard's, Monash and Uni Blues - PETER BRUKNER JUNIOR SECTION 2 With two rounds to go the teams to compete in the finals have been determined and all that can happen now is an internal shuffie For those sides which cannot make the four now is the time to begin preparations for next season Sides out of the four have everything to gain and nothing to lose by beating sides in the four The match of the day will see KEW at home to Coburg Kew are a good side, having already defeated De La Salle and their previous encounter with the visitors resulted in a draw A loss to Coburg could see them lose the double chance Both sides had good wins last week and will be full of confidence I fancy Coburg as they have been more consistent De La Salle O C travel to Albert Park to play Caulfield Grammarians The home side had a good win over West Brunswick last week following a forfeit the week before It would be a great boost to the Caulfield boys if they could win but I expect De La to have too much overall strength West Brunswick await the arrival of Old Haileyburians It is hard to see the black and whites winning this one as the visitors will want to boost their percentage above that of Da La The Fawkner versus MHS Old Boys game should be an an even contest Both sides lost last week and the last victory for both sides was over West Brunswick Fawkner won their first encounter and with the home ground advantage this time they should repeat that performance Therry C COB play Old Paradians and although form is against them they have the potential to beat the visitors Paradians are a good strong side but with no real incentive and having to travel to Albert Park they may lack enthusiasm Therry for the upset result of the day Selections : Coburg, De La Salle, Old Haileyburians, Fawkner, Therry - PETER NATHAN FINALS BOUNDARY UMPIRES The Secretary of the Umpire Committe e wishes to hear from anyone who would like to run the boundary during this year's finals If you are available, contact: Peter Fail, 12 Mackie Grove East Brighton, 3187 Ph : 578 5949 (A H ) THE DECISIO N The Executive Committee, acting on advice from the Investigation Committee, has decided that the Junior Section 2 game of July 1st between Old Haileyburians and De La Salle O C was justifiably abandoned by the Umpire NO POINTS shall be awarded to either team as a result TROPHIES - WHOLESALE-SUPPLY AND ENGRAVING Comprehensive range of trophies Presentation and Gift s SILVER PEWTER STAINLESS WAR E CLOCKS PARKER PEN S JOHN HICKMAN, 94 Elizabeth Street, Melbourne (Opp Hotel London) 63-8033 Illustrated Brochures on Request Page 9

Often the question is asked by men who are nearing the end of their playing careers and are thinking of taking up umpiring as a means of keeping fit and of maintaining their association with Amateur football Here is the answer:- Training is held each Tuesday and Thursday night at Elsternwick Park and at the Collingwood Harriers track The format varies but a typical night's work would involve : An 8 lap warm up 10 50-metre sprints, jog back to start and repeat 4 laps Indian file - last man sprints to front 30 15-metres wind sprints 2 laps warm doia n ball bouncing it is a different type of training from that which players do because it is designed for a different purpose - ensuring that an umpire has the stamina to run for over 120 minutes Ex-players generally do not find it too hard to adapt JUNIOR UMPIRES NIGHT An announcement that this event was to take place was made in the Amateur Footballer on 15 July Thirteen young umpires attended at Elsternwick Park the following Tuesday and trained with the senior umpires Afterwards they joined in a pie-night and were addressed by Umpires' Adviser, Alan A'Neiii and Umpire Committee Secretary, Peter Fell Most expressed an interest in joining the Amateur panel on leaving school We will be keeping in contact with them and they will be guests of the Association at the 'A' Grade Grand Final in September FORTHCOMING MATCHES AT ELSTERNWICK PARK August 12 - Old Scotch Coll v University Blue s August 19 - University Blues v St Bernard's O C W, It )w r Vfl%l 1 71~ F who, would like to ~~ ~ ~ gare with the Amateurs n 19799 - Appli c ations are invited for FIELD, BOUNDARY and G OAL UMPIRES for next season Please contact PETER FEI L 12 MACKIE GROVE EAST BRIGHTON 3 18 7 You'll Be Made Most Welcome!
