G Ride A Wave - Emplyment Infrmatin Sheet (V13) Welcme t G Ride A Wave! Established in 1987, G Ride A Wave (GRAW) is an industry leader in utdr adventure educatin and recreatin. The cmpany perates in tw states and in multiple lcatins. We ffer a variety f activities, and pride urselves n prviding utstanding persnalised service and instructin t ur clients. The majrity f GRAW s business invlves surfing instructin, fr this reasn all new staff begin their emplyment as an assistant surfing instructr. The fllwing pages will cver: Surf class bservatin and paid classes Assistant Surfing Instructr Qualificatin Requirements Hw much wrk can I expect? What s the pay rate? Staff training days Becming a Senir Instructr/ Instructr In Charge Surf class bservatin and paid classes Befre anyne can be cnsidered fr paid wrk, yu are required t bserve at least 2 vluntary (nn-paid) surf classes. These bservatin classes will give yu an idea f what the jb invlves and, as yu will be interacting with ur clients, we are als able t gauge what yu will be like as an instructr. Fr the 1 st Observatin Class, yu must be at least 18 yrs ld, but are nt required t hld any ther qualificatins. Fr subsequent bservatins yu must either hld the apprpriate qualificatins fr the activity (refer t page 2), r must shw evidence f being enrlled t cmplete the apprpriate qualificatins. Each lessn will be with ne f ur senir instructrs wh will guide yu thrugh frm start t finish. A surf class invlves a thery sessins n the beach, and practical sessins in the water (where instructrs help push/pull clients nt waves and ffer feedback and encuragement). We require yu t be invlved in bth, s dn t frget yur wetsuit. 1 st Observatin Class we will supply yu with a lessn plan prir t the class and yu will nly be required t listen, bserve and learn. 2 nd Observatin Class yu are expected t take n a speaking rle fr at least a small part f the thery sessin. The senir instructr will be there at all times t assist yu. Further bservatin classes may be required and will be decided n by the senir instructr. Yu will nt get allcated n a class and paid until yu feel cmfrtable presenting the thery sessin. We will be able t ffer yu paid wrk: nce yu have cmpleted all f the required bservatin classes yu are able t present the thery prtin f the lessn we have evidence f yur required qualificatins / awards we feel yu are suitable t this rle and the G Ride A Wave cmpany. When yu first becme emplyed with us, yu will still be guided thrugh yur early classes under the supervisin f a Senir Instructr. During this perid yur fcus will be n perfecting the beach thery cmpnent. Yu will be assessed by a senir staff member t make sure yu have fully grasped the requirements f teaching surfing t ur clients. Assistant Surfing Instructr Qualificatin Requirements Awards requirements minimum: 1. Emplyee Wrking With Children Check (WWWC) 2. Apply First Aid Certificate (HLTAID003) 3. Surf Brnze Award (Cmmunity SLS Certificate r Brnze Medallin) * 4. GRAW In-Huse Pl Swim (400m within 9 mins) * 5. GRAW Assistant Surf Instructr Written Assessment 6. GRAW Assistant Surf Instructr Practical Assessment * Pints 3 & 4 need t be requalified each year 1. Emplyee Wrking With Children Check (WWCC) All active staff must have an EMPLOYEE Wrking With Children Check (WWCC). http://www.wrkingwithchildren.vic.gv.au/ We have a separate dcument we can supply which assists yu with cmpleting the frm. If yu already have a WWCC, please ensure it s the EMPLOYEE type (nt Vlunteer). Yu will als need t update yur infrmatin by adding G Ride A Wave as yur emplyer. This can be dne nline r by calling them. Apply First Aid Certificate (HLTAID003) The Apply First Aid certificate (frmerly Senir r Level 2 ) is the minimum level we require fr staff t wrk fr G Ride A Wave. The curse needs t be cmpleted thrugh a recgnized learning facilitatr. Please ensure that the curse yu chse has the cde HLTAID003. There are numerus FA prviders, g n-line and lk fr a curse near yu. GRAW In-Huse Pl Swim Test It is cmpulsry that yu cmplete an in-huse pl swim test prir t becming a paid emplyee. The test requires yu t swim 400m within 9 minutes. Please cntact us t arrange a time. If yu achieve the required time yu are cnsidered t be cmpetent. Shuld yu nt reach the time, we encurage yu t d sme training and have anther attempt. 5. 6. GRAW Assistant Surf Instructr Practical Assessment Staff will be assessed during a surfing lessn n their practical instructing skills. The assessment will be carried ut by a senir instructr. ** NOTE: It is the emplyee s respnsibility t ensure all their relevant awards are kept up t date. G Ride A Wave als needs t receive a cpy f these awards. We have a scanner if required. Once we have recrded yur details, we can help t remind yu when each award needs t be renewed, and the best avenue t achieve this. Hw much wrk can I expect? We ffer classes every day and all year rund, but the majrity f ur business is dne during the warmer mnths. The majrity f ur clients are schl grups wh are camping n the surf cast, s mst wrk ccurs n weekdays in term 4 (Oct Dec) and in term 1 & 2 (Feb Apr). We are als busy during the Christmas and Easter hlidays, hwever classes are dependent n public interest. Hw much wrk an instructr gets will depend n: the time f the year (the amunt f client bkings we have received), hw available yu are (if yu are available all day, 7 days a week, yu are likely t get a lt mre classes than smene nly available Mnday s and Tuesday s after 12pm) yur reliability, hw gd yu are at cmmunicating with ur lgistics crdinatr (we use a cmbinatin f remte desktp, email, phne and text t cmmunicate with ur staff) Prmpt replies usually result in mre wrk hw gd an instructr yu are (energetic and enthusiastic staff, wh wrk as part f ur team and are cmmitted t ensuring ur clients get the best service, will get mre wrk), yur living lcatin and/r if yu are prepared t travel (Nte: the majrity f classes are run in the Anglesea area) hw lng yu have been with the cmpany, and, what level f instructr yu are (see Becming a Senir Instructr belw) During busy perids an assistant instructr culd ptentially wrk 8-14 classes per week. What s the pay rate? If emplyment is cnfirmed, prir t receiving pay, yu will need t cmplete the fllwing frms: Tax Declaratin Frm, Bank Details Frm Standard Chice Superannuatin Frm Letter f Engagement ( casual emplyee cntract) Frm Instructrs are emplyed n a casual basis and are paid per class. Mst classes run fr 2 hurs, and Assistant Instructrs are required t be there 10 minutes befre and after the lessn, s are paid fr 2.33 hurs wrk. The current assistant instructr pay rate per hur - Weekday $22.77 and - Weekend/Public Hlidays $23.68 Pay is prcessed electrnically each Wednesday. Staff Training Days At the start f the seasn, time will be allcated fr staff training. The training will mainly fcus n surf instructin and risk management, but will als cver the ther activities which GRAW ffers, such as: Surf Safety and Surf Carnival prgrams River and Ocean Kayaking SUP (Stand Up Paddle Barding) Team Building Training will be available fr all new and existing staff. Existing staff are encuraged t attend the training fr whichever activities they have nt yet, but are interested t teach, r any activity they need t refresh n. * New staff must attend all Surf Class related training. Keep in mind that if yu are trained in multiple activities yu: Are mre valuable t GRAW, Increase yur chances f wrk, Will have mre variety in yur wrk The training will cver all aspects f running a particular activity and the expectatins we have f ur staff. It s a great way t meet ther staff and learn frm thers. Training will als be ffered during the seasn as required. Becming a Senir Instructr/ Instructr In Charge All f the activities that G Ride A Wave ffer perate under strict instructr t client ratis, and every class is allcated an instructr in-charge. Only senir instructrs can be allcated t be the instructr in charge. Surf classes, fr example, are run with a rati f 1 instructr per 8 clients. Fr a class f 1-8 clients nly 1 instructr is required - this instructr must be an instructr in-charge. Fr a class f 9-16, a secnd instructr is required (senir r assistant), fr 17-24 clients a third is required, and s n. Grup class sizes average arund 15-25 students, with sme reaching 50. Senir Instructr In time we will lk int training yu t becme a Senir Instructr. In additin t the Assistant Instructr requirements, Senir Instructrs need t cmplete: - GRAW in-huse 400m pl swim within 7:30 minutes - ART (Advanced Resuscitatin Techniques) Award - GRAW in-huse curse r thrugh SLSA - Spinal Management Award - GRAW in-huse curse r thrugh SLSA - Level 1 Surf Cach Certificate - GRAW Written and Practical Assessment - Shw initiative, respnsibility, maturity and excellent grup cntrl. Instructr In Charge The instructr in charge is respnsible fr the whle f the lessn. Pre-class they gather client infrmatin (class numbers, age, medical requirements) and pack and transprt equipment as required. They are the liaisn with the client, and during the class respnsible fr the safety f the grup. Pst-class they are required t pack up and transprt gear as required (including washing wetsuits). As well as receiving the senir instructr pay rate, the instructr in charge is als paid fr a lnger perid per class. If yu have any questins, please dn t hesitate t cntact me.
