ELSC Nippers Program Guide 2010/11 Introduction The ELSC Nippers program is central to developing our junior lifesavers and provides an active and enjoyable activity for our children. This Program Guide outlines the ELSC Nippers program for 2010/11. The willingness of parents to commit their time to training Nippers is an integral part of the program. We trust you will find your involvement rewarding and memorable. 1. Nippers Schedule ELSC will conduct a 16 session Nippers Program from Sunday 21 Nov 2010, until Sunday 27 Mar 2011. Elwood LSC will attend Nipper carnivals this season. 2. Times Sign in will be from 10.00 am, with sessions running from 10.15 am to 11.30 am. Sign in on the first week shall be from 9.30 am. 3. Age Groups The birth date cut offs for each age group are as follows: a. Under 6: born between 1 Oct 2004 30 Sep 2005 b. Under 7: born between 1 Oct 2003 30 Sep 2004 c. Under 8: born between 1 Oct 2002 30 Sep 2003 d. Under 9: born between 1 Oct 2001 30 Sep 2002 e. Under 10: born between 1 Oct 2000 30 Sep 2001 f. Under 11: born between 1 Oct 1999 30 Sep 2000 g. Under 12: born between 1 Oct 1998 30 Sep 1999 h. Under 13: born between 1 Oct 1997 30 Sep 1998 Successful completion of the Nippers Program will lead to SLSA awards as follows: Under 6 / Under 7: Surf Play Under 8 / Under 9: Surf Awareness Under 10 / Under 11: Surf Safety Under 12 / Under 13: Surf Smart. 4. Eligibility for children to enrol in Nippers Both parents of Nippers must: Have a Working With Children Check ( WWCC ); and Assist with the running of the program. Nippers must meet the following S Badge requirements S Badge Qualifications will be programmed as part of the first two weeks of Nippers. Under 6: No S Badge requirements Under 7 / Under 8: 50m run / 50m wade / 50m run Under 9 / Under 10: 50m run / 50m swim / 50m run Under 11/ Under 12: 50m run / 100m swim / 50m run Under 13 / Under 14: 100m run / 100m swim / 100m run 5. Priority enrolment Priority registration will be given to children whose parents actively assist the club, including parents who: Patrol at ELSC on a regular basis; Act as Age Group Managers (including completion of the Age Managers Course); and Act as Water Safety Officers (requires successful completion of Bronze Medallion qualification), or who provide other active assistance in the Nippers program.

6. Parent Assistance The success of the Nipper program is very dependent upon the support you as a parent provide during the sessions. A parent of each Nipper family is required to provide assistance during the Nippers Program. We request a parent of each family volunteer and assist the Nippers program in one of the following ways: Age Group Manager Age Manager to assist Age Group Manager Bronze Medallion / Surf Rescue Certificate to provide water safety Uniforms BBQ Nipper Sub-committee The person responsible for an Age Group. We currently need 2 additional Age Group Managers. If you would like to take this role, please contact James O Grady. Parents who assist the Age Group Manager, and can manage the Age Group if the Age Group Manager is away. Parents who obtain their water safety qualifications are needed in the water so that we can meet the 5:1 ratio when Nippers engage in water activities. We will inform you of the next Surf Rescue Certificate course. Parents who help in the club at the commencement of the program. In particular, we need assistance in the period prior to Christmas. Parents who help cook for our hungry Nippers. Parents who can assist the Nipper Coordinator. 7. Working with Children Check. To be eligible to enrol children in ELSC Nippers program, both parent members of children are required to have completed a Working with Children Check ( WWCC ). This is a requirement of Life Saving Victoria. The check lasts for a period of five years and costs nothing for volunteers. Forms can be obtained and lodged at Australia Post outlets. The codes you need to enter in section D of the form at 10 and 70. In section E complete the details of all clubs that you volunteer with including Elwood LSC, PO Box 43, Elwood, VIC 3184 and Life Saving Victoria, PO Box 353, South Melbourne, VIC 3205. Parents will be required to produce a copy of their application receipt and/or check card prior to their membership being confirmed and prior to their children participating in the Nippers program. 8. Registration in Nippers Children must be registered and financial to participate in Nippers Registration of your child in ELSC Nippers requires: Completion of online membership registration Payment of the relevant subscription; and Completion of the Nippers Registration Form (attached). Nipper Uniforms We request that Nippers have: ELSC rashie Coloured age group cap The above items can be purchased at regular Nipper sessions. 10. Age Managers Course All new parents volunteering to act as Age Managers will be required to complete the Age Managers course. Please don t be shy, ELSC needs you! You can complete the Age Manager course on-line by going to the Life Saving Victoria Web site at http://www.lifesavingvictoria.com.au. Click on: Youth and Leadership Development, and then Age Managers on the left hand side. 12. Water Safety Officers. ELSC will run Bronze Medallion / Surf Rescue Certificate courses as required during the season. Water Safety Officers will be encouraged to make themselves available for a number of patrols throughout the season and will get priority Nippers registration for their children. These courses are a great way to meet other members and improve your fitness! 13. 14. Nipper Carnivals Elwood LSC is hosting a Nipper Carnival on 29 Jan 2011. Nipper Carnivals are a fantastic way for our children to have fun and to develop their skills and understanding of conditions and safety in and around the water. In the big picture, we hope that competing in Lifesaving as a sport will create for our Juniors a lifelong love and passion for, and participation in, all aquatic recreation and leisure activities. For those who are interested in competing at the Nipper Carnivals, there will be training sessions from 12.00 pm to 2.00 pm after Nipper sessions 1, 2 and 3. We will need lots of parents to help out with training and during the carnivals. Please contact James O Grady on 9507 2480 or at jandjogrady@optusnet.com.au if you can assist. Competition Events The Victorian Junior Surf Carnival season begins in December and culminates with the Junior State Championships in March each year. There are many events that may be contested at each carnival, although programs will vary at each event.
