NarraNews Dec 13 / Jan 14 Established 1964 Official Newsletter of Narrabeen Beach Surf Lifesaving Club Inc. A MESSAGE FROM OUR PRESIDENT As we make our way to the end of another year, our 2013 / 2014 surf club season is now in full flight with several very successful events already held to date. The first ocean swim of the Sydney season kicked off at Narrabeen Beach and I m pleased to say that with the excellent surf and weather conditions and the support of a very committed group of members, we were able to deliver our most successful Narrabeen Ocean Swim yet. Our second major event was the Narrabeen Downwind Challenge again we had great conditions and a cast of helpers from within the club to make sure it all went smoothly on the day. Congratulations to all who contributed to make both these events such an outstanding success!! As we enter our 50 th Anniversary year at Narrabeen, we are seeking to increase our Club membership and also up-skill more of our existing members. In the meantime, the spirit of the festive season is now here and to celebrate, nippers will be holding their Christmas party this Sunday with a special guest appearance from Santa. On Sunday 22 December, the festivities will continue in our Members area with a BBQ and Christmas drinks which will commence once the afternoon patrol has finished for the day. We would love you and your family and friends to join us!! On 12 January 2014, Narrabeen will host the first Junior Nipper Carnival for the New Year and we welcome all hands on deck to ensure we can deliver yet another spectacular event. The last major event of the season will be the Narrathon multi-disciplined event which again, always attracts a wealth of participants to Narrabeen Beach. A very Happy Christmas and New Year to you - we hope the weather continues to be kind for the rest of the season. In particular, we will be running courses to train IRB Drivers and Crew, as well as seeking Bronze medallion recruits. Not only will you learn and be accredited with valuable new skills, you will be part of a great community that often creates lasting friendships. Please check the website for updates. We will be holding a number of special events next year to commemorate our Golden Jubilee year. In particular, a gala dinner will be held at Dee Why RSL on Saturday 12 July 2014 and we would love you to join us at this very special event. See you on the beach! Lifesaving and Education page 2 Bronze assessments Congratulations to our latest bronze medallion recruits. Thank you also to the trainers who conveyed their knowledge of the great skills involved in becoming a surf lifesaver. This enabled the trainees to be ready and capable of patrolling the beach. Proficiencies Thank you to everybody who attended the scheduled proficiencies. We are hoping next season that all dry proficiencies can be coordinated this way to take some pressure off our great team of assessors. If you have not yet done your proficiency, please let your patrol captain know so they can organise a time for you and others on your patrol to be brought up to date. If you have not completed your proficiency by 31 December 2013 you will be unable to continue patrolling as you are no longer proficient, so please try and complete it sooner rather than later. Training will take place on Wednesday evenings from 6.30pm 8.30pm and Saturday mornings from 9.30am 11.30am for about 10 weeks. You ll get fit, meet a whole new bunch of likeminded people and learn invaluable information. If you are interested in joining the course please add your name to the next Bronze candidate s list in the training room or let anyone on the Board of Lifesaving and Education know. Christmas Day patrol roster We are putting together the Christmas Day patrol roster - there will be four x 2 hour patrols that need 5 x bronze holders with an SMBBM, SMIRBD, IRB, Spinal Management and ARTC. If you have a couple of hours to spare on Christmas Day, where better to spend it than our glorious beach. Please let me know or put your name on the Christmas Day roster in the training room. Finally, don t be concerned if you are unsure of your skills - we are willing to update you and if it helps, you can purchase the manual used for bronze training if you would like to do a bit of study first. IRB courses We are putting together an IRB Crew Person and IRB Driver course. If you are interested in either of these awards, please let me know. Joshua Buckton Director Lifesaving and Education Bronze course We are planning to start our next Bronze course in late January 2014. It would be great to have some nipper parents join the course not only to set a great example to your own children but also to join them in the water to help with water safety during nippers each Sunday. Email: lifesaving@narrabeach.org.au Mobile: 0450 920 224 Website: www.narrabeach.org.au

Surf Sports page 3 Recent events Thank you to everyone who helped out at our successful Narrabeen Ocean Swim and Downwind Ocean Series Challenge which took place over two very busy Saturdays. The Narrabeen team is arguably the best in the Branch for their organisation of two very safe and challenging events. Weekly swims Weekly swims have commenced under the watchful eye of one of our finest swimmers, Wayne Schwebel. IRB crew Thank you to our IRB crews who have completed six events to date, and at the same time maintained the high standard that Narrabeen Beach prides itself on. Coolangatta Gold Congratulations to those who competed at Coolangatta Gold. Any senior member competing in events please advise either Sean Townsend or myself so we can coordinate entries and craft. All our patrolling members are encouraged to come on down every Sunday morning at 11am for a handicapped swim, run and flags. Club Championships Our first Club Championship event was held on 24 November 2013. We had a number of participants competing in their age group or for the coveted Club Champion title. Join us for the next one..!! Proficiencies A reminder to all competitors who would like to compete for Narrabeen Beach this year - make sure you are proficient and have completed your membership online. If you haven t yet done your proficiency, watch out for upcoming dates. Robert Buckton Director Surf Sports Narrabeen Nipper Carnival Narrabeen Beach will host a Nipper Carnival on 12 January 2014 so if you are able to assist with First Aid, Water Safety, BBQ, Work Party etc. please let us know. Email: surfsports@narrabeach.org.au Mobile: 0419 800 929 Website: www.narrabeach.org.au

Youth & Membership Development page 4 Well, here we are - nearly a third of the way through the Nipper Season for 2013-14 in this, our 50 th year. Even though Mother Nature has thrown up the usual challenges, we have managed to achieve some great goals for such a small club. Junior Carnivals Congratulations to the nippers who recently competed in the Manly and Queenscliff Junior Carnivals and who represented Narrabeen Beach so well. Despite being a small club, Narrabeen still manages to enter a March Past team each Carnival. This is an achievement in itself, considering most small clubs typically enter a colour party. Even with minimal March Past training, we continue to hold our own by remaining competitive. Well done Team Narrabeen..!! I would like to make special mention of the great effort by Aiden O Malley and Tom Bain in the Under 10 Boys Beach Flags at Manly Carnival, along with Thibault Iatrou-Kosterman in the Under 10 swim. Well done also to Monique Hore in the Under 10 Girls Beach Flags at the Queenscliff Carnival. Photo Day Our Photo Day has been rescheduled for Sunday 15 December 2013. This is a special opportunity to have a great photo of your child as the team shots will go into a coffee table book that the Club will keep as part of our 50 th Anniversary year. GS Imaging will commence capturing photos at 9:30am, starting with the Under 6 nippers. The group photo will take place first followed by individual images for those that want them. Each age group is expected to take around 20 minutes to complete. Costs of the photo packages range from $25 to $15. I have put my order in for fantastic beach weather this time..!! Rookies Program To retain interest in the Club and cultivate a social connection for younger members transitioning between their SRC and Bronze Medallion, we are looking forward to kicking off the Narrabeen Rookies in December 2013. It s been fantastic to see Steve Cooper, Rob Cook, Belinda McCann and Josh Buckton run with this project, which will kick off with a Pizza and Movie night just before Christmas. Sippers after Nippers Our Sippers after Nippers event - the first social event of the season for nippers and parents - was a great afternoon. This was a lovely opportunity to catch up with fellow club members and enjoy some delicious food and drinks while enjoying the spectacular view over Narrabeen Beach from the Members Area balcony. We look forward to the next one..!! Finally This has been my first year working in the role as Nippers Boss (so my shirt says).so thank you all for being such a great group of involved parents. It s also a privilege to work with a wonderful team of Age Managers who jump in and enthusiastically assist each week. Pete Mays Director Youth and Membership Development Email: nippers@narrabeach.org.au Mobile: 0418 669 105 Website: www.narrabeach.org.au

Administration and Finance page 5 After a very steep learning curve I have finally started figuring my way around finance systems and understanding all that s involved in the administration side of our surf club operations. Sponsorships I m pleased to say that we have recently signed up three new sponsors to support Narrabeen Beach. Thank you to these new sponsors - we look forward to a great partnership: ICR Design - three year Bronze sponsorship package Winston Hills Mall - one year Silver sponsorship package Narellan Pools - three year Bronze sponsorship package Premier Health and Fitness in Brookvale also provided sponsorship for our Ocean Swim event and are also supporting our Junior Carnival in January 2014. Information regarding our sponsors and their businesses can be found at our new club website - please support and use these businesses. Our great sponsorship document - put together by our very own marketing guru Brett Worne can be accessed at our new club website. If you are aware of any businesses or companies that may be interested in supporting us through a sponsorship package, please get in touch with me to prepare a specific proposal. Functions If you know anyone keen to hold an event in our fabulous function room, please refer them to our website for initial information, or contact functions@narrabeach.org.au for pricing and availability. Our club income relies heavily on our function bookings, so your help in promoting our beautiful club facilities and location is greatly appreciated. Member functions So far this season we have held a Cocktail Party, NRL Grand Final Day event, and Sippers after Nippers get together. We welcome feedback or ideas for our monthly functions, which are open to all family and friends to attend. This helps grow the camaraderie and friendships at Narrabeen Beach. Our Nippers Christmas Party will be held on Sunday 15 December 2013, which coincides with our rescheduled Nippers photo day. On Sunday 22 December 2013, we will also be having an afternoon Christmas Party for all club members who can come along for a drink, BBQ and celebration. Club keys We have recently received a full KABA key system, thanks to a grant provided to us by SLSNSW. This system has been checked and validated against our computer system and a few bugs have needed to be ironed out. David Cook will be coordinating the rollout of keys with the assistance of Jason Oakes. The date and process will be advised shortly once we receive the last set of wrist strap bands from our supplier. Finance update As with all volunteer organisations we need to ensure all fundraising activities are successful and well attended. These initiatives (along with many others) all help: - buying a coffee and sausage sandwich at the kiosk each Sunday. - patrol captains attending the Dee Why RSL Club housie roster each week (so a percentage of proceeds can be donated to us). - our larger sponsorship packages. - Narrabeen s Junior Carnival event (our main fundraiser during January 2014).

Administration and Finance page 6 Every cent helps us and your support is vital to keep revenue coming in each week to cover the costs involved in running our surf club. Purchasing policy We have also introduced a purchasing policy which means we cannot spend money on behalf of the club unless a Purchase Order is raised through the finance team. This will enable better tracking of upcoming expenses and help project accurate cash flow going forward. I m pleased to say that despite pressure on our finances we have been able to purchase the following capital items: 2 x IRB motors at a cost of around $8,100, which are currently being run-in by our IRB crew. KABA key system at a cost of $7,000. Our acquisition of the IRB motors was driven by the BPM Trading Company and made possible thanks to the Commonwealth Bank Business Grant Program, while the key system purchase was made possible thanks to a grant from SLSNSW. CBA Business Referral Program The Commonwealth Bank offers a business referral program enabling the Narrabeen Surf Club to receive a fee when someone we refer to the bank then purchases an eligible business product or service. The referral fee is kindly donated to our Club. you with a no obligation quote. You may save money and help raise money for Narrabeen Beach Surf Club. Referral fees are fully disclosed and financial information remains confidential between you and the Commonwealth Bank. If you are interested in finding out more, contact Tammy Cook at finance@narrabeach.org.au or 0423 783 925. Tammy will arrange for Robert from the Commonwealth Bank to contact you within 24 hours. Club website Finally, please refer to the Club website for all information and updates. All Club Directors have the ability to update the website directly, so this will be a central point of communication and a reference point for members. If you are looking for information, please try the website first and then let us know what we can improve to keep you informed of what is going on at our Club. That s all from me (for now), and hope to see you at the upcoming Christmas gatherings, or on the beach. Robert Chessell is our local Commonwealth Bank business banking specialist and is keen to assist with a wide range of products and services including: Business accounts EFTPOS facilities Vehicle and equipment finance Investments Home and Business loans So if you re not sure that you are receiving the best service or price from your bank, give the Commonwealth Bank team an opportunity to provide Tammy Cook Director Administration and Finance Email: admin@narrabeach.org.au Mobile: 0423 783 925 Website: www.narrabeach.org.au

Sunday Swims page 7 In case you haven t heard or read the emails, we are once again running our Sunday swims at the club. Every Sunday at about 11am we follow on from the Nipper events with senior handicap events. Swim, beach sprint and flags The events consist of a swim, beach sprint and flags with competitors in each age group vying to be the monthly point score winner. Prizes will be awarded at Presentation Night for each monthly winner, as well as the overall winner. The events are handicapped so everyone has a chance to win a prize. Come on down and join in the fun as it is not too serious and you may even get a little fitter, rather than just sitting on patrol. Age categories The age categories are under 15, under 19, open, over 35 and over 50, so there is no excuse not to join in. Any member can have a go. There appears to be some competition looming especially with the over 50 and over 35 groups, as these are obviously the keen combatants. You should see some big action on the beach with no prisoners taken in the flags. November Monthly Winners Category Winner Points Under 15 Not awarded 0 Under 19 W. McInnes 25 Open G. Foster 9 Over 35 S. Patten 18 Over 50 P. Mansell 27 Women s B. McCann 18 December starts a new round of events so come on down and GET INTO THE SWIM. See you on Sunday. Score winners so far October and November monthly point score winners have been awarded and they can t pick up another monthly award except for the overall winner. The Narrabeen Members Bar page 8 If you re looking for an alternative to the local, or you re feeling more like a staff member than a customer around Narrabeen s cafes, then look no further! The Narrabeen Members Bar boasts an unrivalled outlook over Narrabeen Beach and provides an ideal location to catch up with fellow club members for a quiet drink with a relaxed atmosphere. Sit back and relax inside the clubhouse, or take in the ocean view from the balcony on a Friday evening at the end of the week. Or perhaps come in and enjoy the camaraderie once the flags have come down after patrol on a Sunday evening. The Members Bar will be hosting most major sporting events on the big screens including the NRL Final series and, of course, ALL Manly games not to mention the cricket!

The Narrabeen Beach Function Room page 9 The Narrabeen Beach Function Room is the perfect venue for weddings, engagements and other celebrations. The room is finished with polished timber floors and floor-to-ceiling glass providing access to a full length balcony and an unobstructed outlook of the ocean and lawns. The room is 18m x 10m and can cater for 120 people formally seated or up to 150 people in a more casual setting. Hirers of the venue have exclusive use of the commercial kitchen and bar facilities. The venue also provides disabled access with a lift and disabled toilet facilities. Our room rates include the hire of the room, tables and chairs (if required), bar staff and glasses. We are a licensed venue and have two drinks packages available or we can tailor to specific requirements. Hirers have the option to self-cater or bring in your choice of caterer which along with self decorating provides the perfect venue to create your own unique event. For enquiries or to organise a time to see the venue please contact our function co-ordinator on 0416 209 224. Please note: The venue is not available for hire to birthday parties under 21, school formals or after parties. Member s Function Room Hire All patrolling members are able to hire the main function room at a significantly reduced rate and enjoy a formal sit down occasion for weddings, engagements and other large family occasions. For smaller less formal events such as birthday parties, members can arrange to use the Members Bar area with a modest cost to cover cleaning and bar staff. Remember, there is No Bring Your Own.
