Woodside Junior School Newsletter [12] March 2011 World Book Day It was great to see so many children and staff dressing up as their favourite Roald Dahl characters yesterday. The children have each been given a World Book Day Token worth 1. These can be exchanged for special World Book Day books at most good bookshops. In this technology driven world it s easy for children to miss out on the amazing worlds that books can open up for them. Please encourage your child to read a good book every day. Make sure they go out and spend their token this weekend! Winners of the best costume awards were: Y6 Mia (Mrs Twit) and Callan (Oompa Loompa) Y5 Sam (Danny Champion of the World) Deytona (Mrs Twit) Y4 Jumana (Fantastic Mr Fox), Mia (Oompa Loompa), Emily (Mr Twit), Che-Milan (Willy Wonka) Y3 Tobias (centipede), Caitlin (spider), Olivia and Sophie (Oompa Loompas), Matthew (Muggle Wump). Green Fingers As a Food For Life school we are preparing to start growing our own vegetables in the school garden. We are having some raised-beds built and will hopefully soon be ready to start growing. Garden Organic have been into school this week running planting workshops with some of the children. As the project develops more children will become involved and we aim for each class to be responsible for a section of the garden. Many thanks to Miss Goodwin for all her hard work on this project. Thanks also to Mrs Lawn and Mrs Norman for helping the children during the planting workshops. We are all looking forward to some healthy vegetables very soon. Fair Trade Fortnight Traid- Craft led our Monday assemblies this week focussing on why Fair- Trade makes a huge difference to farmers and producers in the developing world. As a school we are participating in a World Record attempt at the longest ever piece of bunting- all made with Fair trade Cotton. Each child will decorate their own section and Woodside s bunting will join thousands of other schools. Fingers crossed we could all be world record breakers very soon. Friday 18th March is Red Nose Day and it s also a PAWS Mufti Day. We suggest children wear anything red or dress as a monster. All children will be asked to bring something in for the Spring Fayre. PAWS will then make a donation to Comic Relief. We will be selling red noses at school from Monday 7th March, these will be available from the school office and the playground at breaktimes. Cine Club Prefects School Website & photo permissions. Now our new school website is up and running we are going to be uploading updates of the events that are happening at Woodside. At the start of the year, parents were asked to sign a photo permission statement allowing photos of the children to be published and used in school. We will be including photographs on the website and we will check the photo permission statements before we include photos of any children. If you signed the photo permission statement, but now do not want your child to be included in any photos, please do contact the school office to sign a no photographs on the website declaration. If you do not want to alter your permission status you need take no further action. Thank you. Swimming After the Easter Holidays we will be moving our swimming lessons for Y3 and Y4 from the Royal Russell pool to the South Norwood Leisure Centre as we had done in previous years. This will mean that we no longer require coach transport to and from the pool, as the children will be walking to the pool. It also means that we will be having more swimming sessions so the children will get more time in the pool over the academic year. Our Y6 Prefects were treated to a trip to the Cinema this week. They went to watch a special screening of films made by Croydon schoolchildren. They watched 4 films and then voted on their favourite film. The most popular film was Drink Me made by Virgo Fidelis Convent School. This went forward to Fluffy Green Crocodile Alert represent Croydon in the Cine Club finals.
