Family - I enjoy spending time at both the Ridley and Lansdowne YMCAs - both places are just like family. What is your favorite activity to do at the Y? Whatever I am doing at the Y is my favorite. I take lots of classes and love all of them. I enjoy my classes taught by Tina, Fran, Elaine, and Arlene. If I wrote a book I would call it How the Y Saved My Life. The Y has transformed me. The staff are supportive and I have learned to be persistent and patient on my health journey. Since my wife passed of cancer the staff at the Y have been there for me. They ve helped me keep moving - it s been a positive life change. Like I said - the Y is FAMILY and a big part of my life. Registration begins Augusts 27! Monday RY The Story of ME (ages 9-12) Utilize your art and journaling skills to create a unique autobiography. They will receive their laminated book at the end of the session. Monday RY Epic Art (ages 10-12) Explore creativity and create unique works of art through experimenting with different mediums and techniques in a fun, relaxing environment. Thursday RY Basketball Fundamental skills including dribbling, passing and shooting. Upon completion, participants will have Basic Water Safety skills and can volunteer as a Swim Instructor Assistant. Participants, 14+, can then apply to be a swim instructor at the Y. SWIM BASICS Students learn personal water safety and achieve basic swimming competency by learning two benchmark skills: Swim, float, swim - sequencing front glide, roll, back float, roll, front glide, and exit Jump, push, turn, grab SWIM STROKES Having mastered the fundamentals, students learn additional water safety skills and build stroke technique, developing skills that prevent chronic disease, increase social-emotional and cognitive well-being, and foster a lifetime of physical activity. A/WATER DISCOVERY This is your first opportunity to expose your infant or toddler to the wonderful world of water fun and safety. The focus for this class is to ensure your baby s first swim experience is a positive one by guiding both the caregiver and the child in basic water orientation. 1/WATER ACCLIMATION For the beginner swimmer to become adjusted and comfortable in the water. Participants will learn to float, perform front and back glides and proper breath control. 4/STROKE INTRODUCTION Students must be able to proficiently swim 25yd. (15yd for preschool stage) of freestyle and backstroke. Swimmers will build the endurance to swim 50yd. (25yd. for preschool stage) continuously and will be introduced to both the breaststroke and butterfly kicks. Throughout the session, stroke technique will be refined and students will discover how to incorporate swimming into a healthy lifestyle. PRIVATE SWIM LESSONS Private swim lessons are for adults and children to work with an instructor towards their goals. While the main goal is to enhance physical functioning (flexibility, strength and endurance) additional goals include reducing the severity of treatment side effects, preventing unwanted weight changes, improving energy levels and boosting self-esteem.
