Join Us Friday......and Friday afternoon we would like to invite all U16 and under competitors for a technical-oriented light workout on the Mats at our tournament site from 2:00 to 3:30 pm. We will have numerous Black belts, and we invite and encourage all visiting instructors to participate. The event is a way to familiarize the younger judo students with the venue in a learning format and prepare them for the event. We also believe that hands-on Interaction with the various instructors will result in positive learning for all the participants which is our universal goal as instructors of Judo. experience Travis As a benefit of participating in the Edmonton International Judo Championship, we are pleased to announce that Travis Stevens, a three-time USA Olympian, and 2016 Olympic Silver Medalist at -81 kilograms, will be our guest instructor at this Friday afternoon workout. Travis is attending the Edmonton International Judo Championships and is bringing with him a large development team from the USA to participate in our event. Travis, as you all know, is very well regarded in the Judo world and his focus on mental as well as physical performance has resulted in considerable interest by many judokas worldwide. He presently has 43,000 sport specific followers on Instagram and his judo and technical approach may be considered on the forefront of today s competitive judo. Travis, at our request, will be bringing a limited number of technical Judo DVDs which will be available for purchase. This is not an everyday opportunity... It will be a special time for the youth of our sport, and it is these moments that help cement desire and commitment into the young minds about our sport. Please provide your young judoka a unique experience, on the mats, at an incredible venue, with Travis Stevens. Join us on the mat Friday at 2:00 pm. Please ensure the parents bring their phones/camera to capture these moments. 5

REFEREE SYMPOSIUM Officials perform a vital role in the sport of Judo at all levels and are the constant third player on the mat, and without their presence the matches would not happen. The Edmonton International Officiating Symposium is for referees and coaches, or anyone interested in gaining an understanding of the rules of our sport of Judo, from beginners to experienced veterans. The multi hour event brings seasoned International level referees with deep knowledge into a seminar setting complete with video. The event discusses a variety of things relevant to today s referees including concentration and focus on the events that are occurring around the mat, identifying the important calls of the match and reacting accordingly. The seminar discusses developing an ability to anticipate the sequence of events as they are likely to occur and recognize the different potential range of events that occur at different levels. No matter how you come into contact with Judo, the Refereeing Symposium is designed to provide useful tips and information for personal development and training and to help ensure both you and the athletes know the rules. This year s Symposium with the most recent IJF rule changes just coming into play in Canada is a crucial event for all to consider attending. Success on the mats is a function of understanding the nuances of these changes and how it will affect the matches and the activities of the players. This year s event is scheduled for Friday March 9 th at the Executive Royal Inn, 10010-178 th Street, Edmonton, a host hotel for the Edmonton International. Please be early for this 7 PM start event. For more information, or to register please contact Tammy Thornton via email at mrst@telusplanet.net WE highly recommend all referees and interested high level coaches consider this a must attend. 6
