HiVis ANSI/ISEA 107-2004 Standard High Visibility Rainwear Summary Scope: This standard specifies requirements for apparel, capable of signaling the user s presence visually and intended to provide conspicuity of the user in hazardous situations under any light conditions by day and under illumination by vehicle headlights in the dark. Terminology: Background material: Colored fluorescent material intended to be highly conspicuous, but not intended to comply with the requirements of this standard for retro reflective material. Combined-performance retro reflective material: Retro reflective material which is also a fluorescent material. Conspicuity: The characteristics of an object which determine the likelihood that it will come to the attention of an observer, especially in a complex environment which has competing objects. material: Material that emits optical radiation at wavelengths longer than absorbed. These materials enhance daytime visibility, especially during dawn and dusk. Retro reflective material: Material which is a retro reflector and is either 1) not intended to comply with the requirements of this standard for background material, or 2) is a combined-performance retro reflective material. Garment Design Requirements: Whenever multiple bands are placed on the garment, then bands shall be spaced in a manner which provides a minimum distance between bands of retro reflective material at least equal to the width of the band. Whenever horizontal retro reflective materials are placed near the bottom edge of a garment, the material shall not be placed less than 50mm (2 ) above the bottom. If upper bands are utilized, they shall encircle the upper part of the sleeves between the elbow and the shoulder. When lower placement is utilized, the bottom edge of the material shall not be less than 50mm (2 ) from the bottom of the sleeve. Gaps in retro reflective and background materials to enable fastening shall not be more than 2 inches horizontally. Class 1, 2, or 3 garments such as vests, waistcoats, jackets, ponchos, coveralls and bib overalls shall meet the requirements for the respective Class of high visibility safety clothing, and shall have contiguous areas of retro reflective material encircling the torso, placed in such a manner to provide 360 º visibility of the wearer. In addition, coveralls and bib overalls shall have continuous areas of retro reflective materials encircling each leg in such a manner to provide 360 º visibility of the wearer. Overalls or Waistband trouser may be classified as Class E garments if they have a minimum of.07 m 2 retro reflective material.
When such Class E garments are worn with a Class 2 vest, waistcoat, jacket, or poncho, the overall classification for the ensemble shall be classified as a Class 3 ensemble. All reflective tape shall be placed no less than 2 inches above the bottom of the trouser leg. Color Requirements: Only 3 colors are acceptable; yellow-green, fluorescent orange-red and fluorescent red. Chromaticity, both initially and after 40 AATCC 16-1993 fading units, is defined as shown below: Color YellowGreen OrangeRed Red Background Material Color Chromaticity Min. Luminance Coordinates Factor x y 0.387 0.610 0.036 0.494 0.398 0.452 0.460 0.540 0.610 0.390 0.544 0.376 0.579 0.341 0.655 0.344 0.655 0.344 0.579 0.341 0.606 0.314 0.690 0.310 0.76 0.40 0.25 Physical Requirements: Bursting Strength of Knitted Materials and other Nonwoven Constructions: 267N (60 lb) Tear Resistance of Woven Materials (Uncoated, Coated or Laminate) Min: 13N (1360 grams) Resistance to Water Penetration: Per AATCC 35-1994; Less than or equal to 1.0 gram of water for level 1. Per AATCC 127-1995, hydrostatic resistance minimum of 200cm after 5 launderings. Per AATCC 22-1996, spray test, requires 90 originally and 70 after 5 launderings. MVT requirements for breathables: Per ASTM E96 procedure BW, min. 3600 g/m2/24 hours for hydrophilic materials. Labeling Requirements: Care Labeling: Washing or cleaning instructions shall be indicated in accordance with ASTM D5489-01a, as relevant. Then maximum number of processes shall be stated after maximum next to the care labeling. Specific Marking: o Name of manufacturer, style or product name, size o Number of this specific ANSI standard (ANSI/ISEA 107-2004) o Pictogram of product with garment class and performance level for retro reflective material
Performance Class 1 Conspicuity needed in occupational activities which: Permit full and undivided attention to approaching traffic. Provide ample separation from vehicular traffic Permit optimum conspicuity in backgrounds not complex Vehicle and equipment speeds not exceeding 25 mph. Examples of Class 1 workers: Parking lot attendants Shopping cart retrievers Warehouse workers Roadside or sidewalk maintenance workers Delivery vehicle drivers CLASS 1 REFLECTIVE TRIM REQUIREMENTS Min. Area Amount Width Requirement (linear feet) Meters 2 Inches 2 Millemeters Inches 50 mm 2" 6.46 0.10 m 2 155 2 35 mm 1 3/8" 9.39
Performance Class 2 Conspicuity needed in occupational activities which have risk level exceeding class 1, such as: Activities require greater visibility during inclement weather conditions. Work backgrounds are complex. Tasks divert attention from approaching vehicle traffic. Work areas are located near vehicle traffic and speeds exceed those of Class 1 Examples of Class 2 workers: Roadway construction workers Utility workers Survey crews Railway workers School crossing guards Forestry Workers High-volume parking or toll-gate personnel Airport baggage handlers/ground crew Emergency response personnel Law enforcement personnel Accident site investigators CLASS 2 REFLECTIVE TRIM REQUIREMENTS Min. Area Width Amount Requirement (linear feet) Meters 2 Inches 2 Millemeters Inches 50 mm 2" 8.375 0.13 m 2 201 2 35 mm 1 3/8" 12.2
Performance Class 3 Conspicuity needed in occupational activities which have risk level exceeding class 2 such as: Exposed to significantly higher traffic speeds or reduced sight distances. Worker and vehicle operator have high task loads placing worker in danger; or Wearer must be conspicuous through the full range of body motions at a minimum of 390 m (1,280 feet). Wearer must be identifiable as a person. Examples of Class 3 workers: Roadway construction personnel Utility workers Survey crews Emergency response personnel Flagging Crews CLASS 3 REFLECTIVE TRIM REQUIREMENTS Min.
