When this is our attitude, we help to create a community where everyone can enjoy safety, security, cooperative learning and freedom from all forms of harassment. This is the kind of community we foster at PLC Sydney and each person has an important part to play in maintaining it. All members of the College community are expected to relate to one another in ways that will ensure that every person is able to: Be respected and valued as an individual Feel safe and secure Be free to work and learn in a positive environment Be treated fairly Be free from bullying Have his/her privacy and property respected Feel free to seek and accept appropriate help and support when it is needed. The College considers that behaviour which does not demonstrate respect for these basic needs and freedoms of others is unacceptable. PAGE 2 PLC SYDNEY SWIMMING 2018

Welcome to the 2018 edition of the PLC Sydney Swimming Information Booklet. For those who have competed for PLC Sydney in swimming and were a member of the 2017 team that was beaten by half a point, welcome back, and to those who are new to the program, I hope you find this booklet answers most of your questions. My name is Ms Harden and I can be contacted at the below details for questions you may have regarding anything to do with the School pathway swimming responsibilities (ie; PLC Sydney school swim carnival, IGSSA team selections, absence/sickness/illness, extra-event entries for CIS, NSW All Schools and School Sport Australia). CONTACT DETAILS Ms Belinda Harden Swim Co-ordinator & Head of Sport PLC Sydney P: 9704-5645 E: bharden@plc.nsw.edu.au Mr Brian Sutton Mrs Karen Stephenson Head Swimming Coach Aquatic Coordinator PLC Sydney PLC Sydney E: bsutton@plc.nsw.edu.au E: karens@plc.nsw.edu.au PAGE 3 PLC SYDNEY SWIMMING 2018

The IGSSA swimming carnival is the major meet for the College. It is held at the Sydney Olympic Park Aquatic Centre in March each year and involves approximately 26 IGSSAbased schools from NSW. PLC Sydney was last victorious in 2016 taking out the division one title. In 2017 we were beaten by half a point. The College is represented by swimmers ranging from year 7 through to year 12, led by our senior swim captain/s and coached under Head Coach, Brian Sutton. The rules for entries and all things to do with the carnival is attached in the appendices for your information. Selection into the IGSSA swim team is based upon performance at the IGSSA carnival and extra event entries which are submitted into Ms Harden and ultimately determined by the IGSSA committee. Progression from IGSSA into the Combined Independent Schools team is based upon performance at the CIS Carnival and ultimately determined by the CIS committee. Selection into the NSW All Schools swim team is a result of the CIS carnival which is also determined by the NSW All Schools swim committee. To be selected for representation at School Sport Australia, times and results from the NSW All Schools carnival is the pathway for each swimmer. This is based upon all individual events however relay teams can be changed at any stage of the swim season and is ultimately up to the discretion of the PLC Sydney selection committee. As a member of the PLC Sydney IGSSA swim team you are expected to attend and participate at the IGSSA carnival in the spirit of school sport. Squad members will be notified of their specific swims in the week leading up to the carnival. Any reserve swimmers or squad members selected as additional team managers will be expected to attend the carnival. Participation in the PLC Sydney swim squad is not an automatic entry into the PLC Sydney IGSSA swim team; a letter of selection into the team and invitation to attend the IGSSA carnival will be given by Ms Harden and Ms Stephenson individually. Uniform for the IGSSA swim carnival is PLC Sydney PE tracksuit with the College PE Polo shirt. All can swim in their own swimming costumes or racing suits. Team members will be given seamless swimming caps which are compulsory to race in. PAGE 4 PLC SYDNEY SWIMMING 2018

There are a number of dates that are an expectation of each student to attend. The timeline will be handed out at the first team training session following the PLC Sydney Swimming Carnival on Tuesday 13th February. Important dates to remember currently are the Manly Swim Day out on Tuesday 30 January 2018 and IGSSA Swimming & Diving Carnival on Friday 16 March 2018. To become a member of the PLC Sydney IGSSA swim team, selections will be based on: School carnival results Attendance at compulsory lunchtime training sessions and lunchtime meetings Long-course times registered with NSW swimming from exterior carnivals Attitude and commitment toward being a team player Selections will be made to achieve the best possible results for the College PLC Sydney s policy of team selection is based upon merit in consultation with the Head Coach and Aquatic Coordinator, as well as the Senior Swim Coordinator and the Head of Sport. Relay teams which are successful in qualifying from a heat to a final and from the IGSSA Carnival to the CIS Carnival are not necessarily kept the same. Reserves for each relay will be named; they should be prepared to swim to warm-up with the team, to possibly swim a final, a heat or both. They should also be prepared not to swim. Students will be notified of their selection in the IGSSA squad directly following the completion of the senior school swim carnival. It is an expectation of all students to make it known to the Senior Swim Coordinator of any concerns/illnesses/injuries which may affect the well-being of any girl, by communicating in person at the PLC Sydney PE Department or via email bharden@plc.nsw.edu at any stage throughout the 2018 school year. In the instance of a final team time trial being required to ensure a fair and equitable team selection; the student/s involved will be notified prior and details of the swim-off will be determined at the discretion of the Senior Swim Coordinator and the Head Coach. PAGE 5 PLC SYDNEY SWIMMING 2018

For those swimmers with qualifying times for CIS the extra-event entries will NOT be accepted past the due date. It is up to the individual to submit entries on time to ensure the best possible outcome. CIS extra-event entries will only be accepted in the format required; and only be accepted if all rules of the entry requirements are adhered to. It is an expectation of each student that they make themselves available, and give 100% effort on all occasions at the following events; 1. PLC Sydney School Swim Carnival 2. IGSSA Swim Carnival 3. NSW Combined Independent Schools Carnival 4. NSW All Schools Carnival 5. School Sport Australia IN ALL INSTANCES THE SELECTION OF TEAMS IS A MATTER FOR THE PLC SYDNEY HEAD SWIM COACH AND AQUATIC COORDINATOR Monday, Wednesday, Friday lunchtime 12.30-1.10pm beginning first Friday after the PLC Sydney school carnival and commencing last day before the IGSSA Swim Carnival. It is an expectation for all team members to attend at least one of these sessions. Any absences must be communicated to the Senior Swim Coordinator prior to that week. At various times throughout this period, individuals may be asked to attend these sessions as an invitational squad member at the discretion of the Head Coach and Senior Swim Coordinator. These sessions are an integral part in creating the successful team environment the PLC Sydney swim team has. There will be various team meetings throughout Term 1 and Term 2 which will communicate important and relevant information relating to PLC Sydney swimming. These meetings are compulsory. Non-attendance must be followed up by an email to the Senior Swim Coordinator, or a visit to the Sport Department to keep up-to-date with any relevant information. PAGE 6 PLC SYDNEY SWIMMING 2018
