Special Show Pricing for In- County 4-H Members in Good Standing The Caroline- Dorchester County Fair Horse Show Committee would like to offer a special discount to all incounty (Caroline & Dorchester Only) 4-H members in good standing for the 2017 Fair Open Horse Show (not including the Speed Show). The horse and rider MUST pre-register! If the rider decides to register the day of the show, they will pay normal prices for classes. This discount would be $5 registration per horse and only $20 for the rider to show all day. Caroline Dorchester County Fair Speed Show &Open Horse Show Rules August 4 &5, 2017 1. Office Fee: If Pre-Registering $5 If Registering the Day of the Show $10 Class Fee: $5 per class (Payable at check in, day of show) Make checks payable to: Caroline County Fair, Inc. 2. Each horse/rider combination will need an entry number and their own entry form. 3. A WAIVER MUST BE SIGNED BY RIDER OR PARENT/GUARDIAN (FOR EACH CHILD UNDER THE AGE OF 18) BEFORE THE SHOW BEGINS AT 9 AM. THE RIDER WILL NOT BE ALLOWED TO ENTER THE RING UNTIL THIS FORM IS SIGNED! THIS RULE WILL BE STRICTLY ENFORCED. 4. PROOF OF NEGATIVE COGGINS IS REQUIRED FOR ALL HORSES AND MUST BE PRESENTED AT THE GATE. THOSE WITHOUT PROPER PAPERWORK WILL BE REFUSED ENTRANCE- NO EXCEPTIONS. 5. The Caroline County 4-H Park and the Caroline Dorchester County Fair officials and committee members will not be responsible for any injuries, damage or loss of property incurred to spectators, exhibitors or animals. 6. The age of participants is as of January 1, 2017. 7. The Judge s decision is final in all matters. The judge is under no obligation to show his/her notes to any exhibitor, trainer, spectator or parent for review. Any complaint or concerns should be voiced to either the ring steward or to the show committee. There is no addressing the judge directly. 8. Unruly and/or unsafe horses will be excused from the show grounds by the Show Committee. 9. Exhibitors can be asked to leave the show grounds for unsafe or unsportsman like behavior. 10. Stallions are prohibited. 11. Motorized vehicles (ATVs, golf carts, scooters, etc.) are prohibited on the show grounds. 12. All animals must be sound by the opinion of the judge. 13. Pets are to be kept on a leash at all times, loose pets will result in a request to leave the fairgrounds. 14. 4-H exhibitors are subject to all rules of the Maryland 4-H Horse and Pony Rule Book; ALL exhibitors are to follow the following show specific rules and class descriptions. 15. This show is provided by the Caroline Dorchester County Fair to promote safety, good horsemanship and good showmanship with the opportunity to learn and have fun at the same time. 16. Approved ASTM helmets will be required while mounted by all 4-H and Youth 18 & under.

17. Proper fitting riding boots are required for all riders (no flip flops, open heel, open toed shoes, tennis shoes/sneakers, etc.) 18. All patterns will be posted prior to the start of the show at 9 a.m. 19. Horses are not to be ridden outside the show rings or prep area. 20. No person other than the entrant, ring steward and judge are allowed in the show ring while a class is being judged. The ONLY exception to this rule is the Leadline Class. 21. Martingales are ONLY permitted in speed and over fences classes; tie-downs are ONLY permitted in speed classes; draw reins are strictly prohibited while being judged. Class Descriptions Halter: The horse is to be shown in hand at a walk and trot/jog. A suitable headstall/halter with a throat latch is to be used. Some of the important factors are general appearance, conformation, balance and style, size and soundness, trueness to breed or type characteristics, stride, etc. Showmanship: The horse is to be shown in hand at a walk and trot/jog. The basis for a showmanship class is: (a) the condition of the horse, cleanliness of the hair coat, mane, tail, hooves, and tack. (b) neatness of any clipping, trimming, braiding/banding. (c) the ability of the exhibitor to correctly execute the pattern. Leadline: The rider is to show at a walk, going both ways of the ring. An experienced handler must lead the animal. The rider may be asked to back. The rider must be 7 years or younger as of January 1 st and must be able to sit on the animal without someone propping them up. The rider and handler must wear proper fitting equipment (helmets for rider, boots for rider and handler). Preference will be given to riders without a side walker (person other than the handler). The rider may cross-enter into the Open Walk class. Open Walk: To be shown both ways of the ring at a walk. Entrants may be either English or Western. This class is for beginner/novice riders and the green horse that is well mannered (unruly horses may be asked to leave the ring due to safety). A beginner/novice rider can be any age but has only shown one year or less (outside of leadline) in a riding class. The green horse is an animal in their first year of showing. This class is to be judged 50% on the mount and 50% on the rider. The entrant may not cross-enter into any other division other than leadline. Western Pleasure: To be shown under saddle both ways of the ring at a walk, jog (and lope). To be judged on the suitability of the mount to the rider, manners, performance and the ability to give a safe, pleasurable ride. The tack and animal should be neat and clean. The rider may be asked to back.

Western Horsemanship: To be shown under saddle both ways of the ring at a walk, jog, (and lope), as well as a pattern. To be judged on the rider. The rider will be judged on their hands, seat, balance, general performance at each gait and the execution of a pattern. There will be a different pattern for the walk jog class and the walk jog lope class. English Equitation classes/over Fences (Short Stirrup, Junior Eq, Adult Eq.): To be shown under saddle both ways of the ring at a walk, trot, (and canter), as well as a pattern. To be judged on the rider. The rider will be judged on their hands, seat, balance, general performance at each gait and the execution of a pattern. There will be a different pattern for the walk trot class and the walk trot canter class. English Pleasure/Over Fences: To be shown under saddle both ways of the ring at a walk, trot (and canter). To be judged on the suitability of the mount to the rider, manners, performance and the ability to give a safe, pleasurable ride. The tack and animal should be neat and clean. The rider may be asked to back, as well as to perform a collected and extended trot. Hunter/Over Fences: To be open to both horses and ponies and shown under saddle both ways of the ring at a walk, trot (and canter). To be judged on performance and soundness with an emphasis on manners. Trail: To be shown under saddle in the lower half of the second ring. This class is open to English and Western. The class is to be judged on the performance of the animal over obstacles, response to the rider and way of going. On the third refusal of any obstacle, the rider will be asked to proceed to the next one. This class will be judged by a secondary judge from the times of 10 a.m. to lunch ONLY. Barrels: This class is open to Western and English riders. This is a timed event, timing shall begin as soon as the horse crosses the starting line and ends when the horse passes over the finish line. This event is done in the traditional cloverleaf pattern (to the left or right). Knocking over a barrel carries a five second penalty. Pole Bending: This class is open to Western and English riders. This is a timed event, timing shall begin as soon as the horse crosses the starting line and ends when the horse passes over the finish line. This event is done in the traditional serpentine patterns. Knocking over a pole carries a five second penalty; going off pattern results in a disqualification. Key Hole: This class is open to Western and English riders. This is a timed event, timing shall begin as soon as the horse crosses the starting line and ends when the horse passes over the finish line. This event is done in the traditional keyhole pattern. Mystery Class: This class is open to English and Western riders of all ages. This class will be announced after the open walk class. It will be a fun or speed type class, which may include dollar bareback, egg and spoon, command class, funnel run, etc. If a pattern will be used, it will be posted as soon as the class is announced.

Ribbon Race: This class is open to English and Western riders of all ages. This is a timed event, timing shall begin as soon as the horse crosses the starting line and ends when the horse passes over the finish line. Riders are put in pairs, who ride next to each other holding a ribbon between them. They must ride from one end of the arena, around a barrel, and back without losing the ribbon or breaking it. All ribbons will be the same length. Egg & Spoon Race: This class is open to English and Western riders of all ages. Each participant gets an egg on a spoon and will be run as a typical riding class walk, trot/jog and canter/lope although other maneuvers may be added. The last person with an egg wins. Eggs and spoons will be provided by show committee. Dollar Bareback: This class is open to riders of all ages and must be ridden bareback (no saddle or pad). All dollar bills must be provided by the participant. The dollar bill is placed by the show committee under the rider s knee, seat, thigh or calf. This class is run as a typical pleasure class walk, trot/jog and canter/lope although other maneuvers may be added. If you lose your dollar, you re out. To rider who keeps their dollar the longest wins all the dollars.
