Newsletter for July 30, 2017 From Russ and Anne Nejdl, Swinging Stars Presidents: What a fabulous dance we had last night, celebrating Wayne s 50 years of calling! We heard so many comments about how much our visitors enjoyed the dance and appreciated all the effort that went into this dance. We told everyone that Russ and I had the easy job. All the hard work was done by the club members, particularly by Ralph and Lucy Hamm and Dave and Lorraine Burson. The Hamms did an outstanding job coordinating everything including the workers, the food and all the committees. And they did all this while their son was critically ill in the ICU! Dave and Lorraine started the ball rolling by facilitating the venue, securing the guest caller, creating the flyer, and by answering all our hundreds of questions about the agenda. Lorraine even made the most beautiful quilt in club colors for Wayne with club member s names embroidered in each panel. Charlie and Linda Harris presented Wayne with an engraved glass Texas remembrance plaque. Thanks Walter for early rounds and keeping the rounds going all night long. Eula did the most amazing job of selling honey pot tickets. We had to have 3 drawings because we set a record for money collected. I know we will miss some members but we want to recognize certain individuals for all the work they did above and beyond what was required: Decorations: Debbie Reid + her team Beverages: Linda & Charlie Harris + their team Set-up: Burson + team Honey Pot: Perrott + team Greeters: Estep + team Clean-up: Trujillo, Pitts, Pelton, and Stuart Food Service: Rickert + team Registration: Mulvin, Lassiter Friendship: Mulvin + team After Party: Lassiter Thank you to all the callers and cuers who came to the dance and made this such a special occasion. Wayne was able to invite each caller on stage for a special tip with each. Thank you to Deborah Carroll-Jones, Jon Jones, Rick Smith, Bill Hinckley, Toby Thomason, Dave Viera, Lee Meador and our guest caller Charles Quisenberry. Guest cuers present were Christine Hixson, our own JL Pelton, Chris Farabaugh, Charles Crockett, and Michele Viera. We also were pleased to see some familiar faces of former members: Andy and Debbie Piziali, Marcy and Mark Sherman, Carol and Don Capps, and associate member, Gary Amy. Wish we could see more of all of you.

We had a total of 152 guests and 86 Swinging Stars in attendance for a total of 243 attendees. Nevin tells us he only counted the paying guests. Callers and cuers do not pay so we probably had an additional 12 visitors. Here is the breakdown on clubs who attended this dance: Rebel Rousers: 20 Model A: 5 Ramblin Rounds: 3 Fort Worth Squares: 11 T Square Gadabouts: 8 Triangle Squares: 16 Dixie Chainers: 11 Texas Reelers: 22 Circle I: 14 Kissin Kuzzins: 10 Cotton Pickin Squares: 2 Cliff Dwellers: 2 Diamond Jubileers: 2 Independents: 13 Dynamic Squares: 1 Lone Star Solos: 1 Pioneer: 3 Rockwell Squares: 4 Stone Steppers: 2 NTCA: 2 Thank you again to the entire club for taking the effort to help, donate food and be there for Wayne. Russ and Anne Nejdl

Announcements From the Chairmen of Wayne s World Dance (Ralph and Lucy Hamm) A great big thank you to all Swinging Stars members, and to Jodie Baldwin and Eula Brewer, who volunteered to work and brought food to Wayne s special dance. You are responsible for the very successful celebration of the stellar calling career of the gentleman who has enabled all of us to enjoy our favorite pastime so much. Special thanks go to the chairmen: the Bursons (their advice and assistance was greatly appreciated); the Reids (wonderful decorations, many compliments from attendees), the Harrises (expert beverage service, and your personal encouragement was very important to us); Jeanne Rickert (extremely efficient food service she led on her own since Peter was in Asia); the Mulvins (in charge of two committees and our ever efficient Treasurers); the Perrotts ( honey pot experienced, and they also gave us moral support); the Esteps (calmly handled the ever changing greeters list and had the faith to ask us to chair this event back when they were Presidents); and the Lassiters (fabulous after party hosts). Also, special thanks to Jodie your memorabilia table was a center of attention and contributed much to this celebration. Special shout outs to the Trujillos and the Stuarts who literally worked most of the evening keeping things straight and cleaning up at the end. Finally, we give personal thanks to our great Presidents, the Nejdls, and to the Peltons for their weekly support and for being our sounding boards through our son s medical crisis. Fall Mainstream Lessons: By now you should have received the Plano Parks and Rec Leisure Catalog for the fall. On page 58, our lessons are listed as Modern Square Dance (Beg). The course # is 193850. The 16 lesson class starts on Tuesday, September 5 th through December 19 th. Now is the time to start recruiting. We have completed our advertising, but we get many class participants through word of mouth from our club members. Next club dance, our Ice Cream Social, August 11 th, we will passing out flyers, trifolds and business cards for you to hand out to your friends and acquaintances. We need your help to make this class successful.

FALL ROUND DANCE LESSONS (submitted by JL & Linda Pelton) Signup opens Saturday, August 5, for Plano residents and Monday, August 7th for all others. The class is listed in the Plano Parks and Rec catalog and on the website as -- Round Dance (Continuing Basics) New -- Class #195085. If you are looking for the class it is listed in the 50+ section under Dance. You can telephone 972-941-7155 to sign up is or register online at https://parks.planotx.org/econnect Class starts Saturday morning, September 2-9:30 to 11:30 a.m. at the Plano Senior Center, 401 W. 16th Street just off the south access road of 75 and north of George Bush. Note that September 2 is the start of the Labor Day Weekend. We didn't realize that when we scheduled the start date -- so that is an extra class as the printed catalog shows starting September 9. We figured it would be easier to start the day listed in our advertising regardless -- and just offer it as an extra lesson for everyone. You can ignore the times in the catalog as they are wrong. Class is from 9:30 to 11:30 a.m. These are lessons and practice dancing, like an easy round dance club. If you have had some lessons, no matter what rhythm, but are really rusty or if your dancing level is easy square dance rounds, this is perfect for you to refresh your dancing skills and to be able to get out on the dance floor more. The class curriculum will be set by the dancers who sign up for the class. A SPECIAL THANK YOU We loved seeing so many Swinging Stars at our Dance Party last Sunday. We appreciate your support and so glad you could join us to celebrate our 10 year wedding anniversary. Wendy and Bill Perrott did a fantastic job of the decorations and I know we had many Swinging Stars who helped throughout the dance and cleaning up at Swingtime too. We know it's a long trip over to Swingtime and we were happy to see so many of you. Round-Up Grand Prize Tickets Hopefully you have all turned in the money or unsold tickets for Round-up to the Lassiters. They plan on turning everything in by August 1 st (Tuesday). Please help them wrap this up. Third Quarter Dues The 3Qtr Dues of $22.50 per member or $45.00 per couple is due July 1, 2017. Please pay at the next Swinging Stars Dance or mail a check to our treasurer Nevin Mulvin at: 3409 Eisenhower Lane Plano, TX 75023-3933 nrmulvin@verizon.net 214-790-3908

Lost and Found Did anyone leave a hand towel at the dance last night? Look familiar? We will bring it to the next dance if it is yours. * * * 2 nd VP Report * * * By Bob and Terri Pitts We hope you had as much fun dancing this weekend as we did. It was great to be able to visit the Rockwall Squares on Friday night and an honor to celebrate Wayne s 50 years of calling Saturday night. There is another fun weekend around the corner with a Friday dance with the Texas Reelers for their Disco Fever dance and Saturday night Circle I is having a Nifty Fifties double deal dance in Irving. As always, you are welcome to send BRIEF visitation write ups for inclusion in the newsletters. 22 nd Annual Evening in Paris, 1-2Sep If you are interested in attending the Evening in Paris weekend please let us know asap (email: 2ndvp@swingingstars.org). There are 2 dance halls and the dancing will include Plus, Advance, DBD, hot hash, and rounds with teaches. The callers are: Ken Bower, Gary Shoemake, Mike Bramlett, Darryl McMillan, and Elmer Sheffield. The cuer is Martha Kosloski. This is a fun weekend getaway that is usually well attended by our club and includes a club dinner and after party. There is a club rebate if enough Swinging Stars attend and we usually have to send our payments together. We will share more details soon. Recent Club Visitations Bill Haynes Annual Advanced & Challenge Level Square Dance Weekend, 22-23Jul More than six squares from all over Texas & Oklahoma enjoyed the extraordinary square dance calling of Bill Haynes from Mesa, AZ. The weekend schedule included four 2-hour sessions of A2 level and one 2-hour session of C1 level. The DBD choreography presented many challenges to the strongest dance floor in the 3-years we have attended. The tips were enjoyed by all judging by the standing ovation the caller received at the end of an A2 session. Thanks to Tom Evanto for this write up. Rockwall Squares, 28Jul Thank you to the 12 Swinging Stars who took the rare opportunity to visit the Rockwall Squares Friday night for a 50 s theme dance. We say rare because they usually dance the same nights we do. Michelle Vieira cued the early rounds and rounds between tips pulling out many fun tunes from the 50 s and 60 s. Hubby Dave Vieira called the mainstream and plus tips. He also found a great assortment of 50 s and 60 s songs that were fun to square dance to including an Elvis Presley montage that was very good. The Rockwall Squares graciously gave us their banner which we promptly returned at our Wayne s World dance. Banner Status Our current Swinging Star banner inventory is shown below. If you visit a club whose banner we have, please don t bring home another one.
