The contest will be the first-ever game in the Big 12/SEC Challenge a yearly series between the two conferences that makes its debut this year. THE BROADCAST Thursday night s contest will be televised nationally on ESPN2, with Dave LaMont (play-by-play) and Darrin Horn (analyst) on the call. The game can also be heard on the Crimson Tide Sports Network, with Chris Stewart (play-by-play) and Bryan Passink (analyst) calling all the action. There will be live updates throughout the game available on. THE COACHES Alabama head coach Anthony Grant begins his fifth season at the helm of the men s basketball program. He owns an 86-53 (.619) record during his time at the Capstone and is 162-78 (.675) in seven seasons as a head coach. Texas Tech head coach Tubby Smith is in his first season with the Red Raiders. Now in his 23rd season as a head coach, Smith owns a career record of 513-226 (.694). NOTES YOU NEED TO KNOW Junior Algie Key scored 20 points in his Alabama debut in the loss to Oklahoma. The last Crimson Tide player to score 20 or more points in his first game at UA was Alvin Lee who scored 21 points in Alabama s season-opener his freshman year on Nov. 27, 1987 against New Mexico State. Alabama and Texas Tech will be playing the inaugural game of the Big 12/SEC Challenge. All 10 of the Big 12 s teams and 10 of the SEC s 14 member institutions will participate in the annual event. The next games in the series will take place Dec. 2 when Vanderbilt plays at Texas and Auburn travels to face Iowa State. UA has a record of 42-4 when playing its first home game of the season at Coleman Coliseum. That number dates back to the first-ever game played at the venue, which opened on Feb. 1, 1968 (won 86-65 vs. Samford). The four losses have come against Cornell in 2009, Mercer in 2008, Chattanooga in 1993 and La Salle in 1979. Alabama has not opened a season with two consecutive losses since doing so at the beginning of the 1999-2000 campaign. That season, the Tide dropped back-to-back contests to Northern Iowa (74-73) and at Saint Louis (78-70) to begin the year. DALLAS - The Alabama men s basketball team fell to Oklahoma, 82-73, in both teams season opener at the American Airlines Center in Dallas, Texas last Friday. Junior guard Algie Key led the Crimson Tide with 20 points on 7-of-8 shooting in his UA debut. Obviously disappointed with the loss, but you have to compliment Oklahoma, UA head coach Anthony Grant said. I thought they did a really good job attacking when we had a big lead in the first half and I thought they did a good job on the offensive glass all night. Sophomore guard Retin Obasohan tied his career high with 14 points. Senior guard Trevor Releford had 12 points while struggling with foul trouble for much of the game. Junior forward Rodney Cooper had his second career double-double with 10 points and 10 rebounds. Alabama got out to a 26-10 lead thanks to a 20-3 run and led 41-40 at half, but was outscored 42-32 in the second half. The contest featured seven ties and 12 lead changes in the back-and-forth affair. The Sooners were led by Buddy Hield s 19 points, while Ryan Spangler added 15 points and 12 boards. 31 ST Alabama finished the season ranked No. 31 in the nation in average attendance in 2012-13. SCOUTING Alabama is coming off an 82-73 season-opening loss to Oklahoma in Dallas at the Buckets and Boots Showcase. The Tide was led by junior Algie Key who scored 20 points in his UA collegiate debut. The Tide returns eight letterwinners and three starters from last season s 23-13 squad that finished tied for second in the SEC (12-6). Five of the top seven scorers return from last year s NIT quarterfinal team, led by First Team All-SEC and All-District performer in senior guard Trevor Releford. The Kansas City, Mo., native topped the Crimson Tide last season in scoring (14.9 ppg), steals (2.1 spg), three-point field goal percentage (.407) and minutes (33.2) per game. Junior guard Rodney Cooper returns as the team s second-leading returning scorer after averaging 10.2 points per game a year ago. He also led the team in rebounding with 4.5 boards per contest. Other top players from last season include junior guard Levi Randolph (8.1 ppg and 4.2 rpg), junior forward Nick Jacobs (7.6 ppg, 4.1 rpg) and sophomore guard Retin Obasohan (3.9 ppg and 3.1 rpg). Junior center Carl Engstrom, who received a medical redshirt last season, has recovered from a knee injury he suffered early last year and will supply added depth to the post players -TEXAS TECH: THE SERIES Alabama and Texas Tech will meet for the second consecutive season and for the eighth time in series history when the teams play on the hardwood Thursday night. The Tide owns an all-time record of 6-1 and have won four straight in the series between the two teams, including winning 66-62 last season in Lubbock, Texas (box score on pg. 7). This will be the second time in series history that Texas Tech will play Alabama in Tuscaloosa. The only other meeting came in the first contest between the schools back on Dec. 15, 1962. The Tide won that game, 62-57. NEXT UP Alabama will begin play in the NIT Season Tip-Off when it hosts Stillman on Monday, Nov. 18, at 7 p.m. CT at Coleman Coliseum. Monday will be the first day of the four-team pod, with Georgia State and McNeese State playing the opening game at 4:30 p.m. at Coleman Coliseum. The winning teams and the losing teams of the first round will then meet on Tuesday, Nov. 19. Regardless of Monday s outcome, Alabama will play in the 7 p.m. game on Tuesday. ABOUT THE BIG 12/SEC CHALLENGE Over the summer, the Southeastern Conference and Big 12 Conference agreed to play in the Big 12/ SEC Challenge, a men s basketball inter-conference event that will begin this season. All 10 of the Big 12 s teams and 10 of the SEC s 14 member institutions will participate in the annual event. Arkansas, Georgia, LSU and Tennessee will not play in the first year. ESPN will provide exclusive coverage of all 10 games across it networks. Eight of the 10 games in the 2013 event will be played at home sites (each conference has four home games) and two matchups will be at neutral sites. The inaugural Big 12/SEC Challenge (the event title will rotate to SEC/Big 12 Challenge in 2014) is a combination of existing games already scheduled along with new matchups created for this event during November and December. KEY CONTRIBUTION Junior guard Algie Key made quite the Alabama debut last Friday night vs. Oklahoma. The Decatur, Ga., native finished the night with 20 points on 7-of-8 shooting from the floor. Key s 20 points were the most points scored by an Alabama player in his debut since Alvin Lee scored 21 points as a true freshman on Nov. 27, 1987 vs. New Mexico State. VS. THE BIG 12 UA is 30-22 all-time against current members of the Big 12. Head coach Anthony Grant owns a record of 4-5 when facing Big 12 teams during his head coaching career. Thursday s match-up marks the second consecutive Big 12 opponent for Alabama after facing Oklahoma last Friday night. BASKETBALL TIDBITS Over the last three years, Anthony Grant teams boast a record of 48-7 (.873) when playing at Coleman Coliseum. The last time an Alabama basketball team began a season with two losses came during the 1999-2000 campaign. The Crimson Tide will open the season against back-to-back Big 12 opponents. It marks the first time in the modern era that has occurred. Alabama leads all SEC men s basketball teams and ranks among the top 10 percent of all Division I men s hoops programs in the NCAA Academic Progress Report (APR). Since 2000, Alabama has graduated 39 of 40 men s basketball seniors (97 percent). Last season, Alabama ranked 31st in the nation in average attendance (11,159). Since his arrival, Alabama owns a home record of 27-6 (.818) against SEC competition, including a 23-2 (.920) mark in the past three years alone. MILESTONES TO WATCH Should Alabama hit a three-pointer vs. Texas Tech, it will mark the 100th straight game the Tide has connected on at least one trey in a contest. Trevor Releford needs five steals to earn his 200th career takeaway (195). In doing so, he would become the first person in program history to record 1,300 points (1,311), 300 assists (300) and 200 steals. Releford needs two points to move past Charles Cleveland (1,312) into 25th on the school s all-time scoring list. In fact, with 17 points, he can move all the way up to 20th on the list, currently held by former great Richard Hendrix (1,327). Junior Nick Jacobs needs 26 points to reach 500 points in his career (474). Junior Levi Randolph needs 15 rebounds to reach 300 career boards (285). Anthony Grant is 14 wins shy of winning his 100th game at Alabama. He is only 11 games from coaching his 150th game with the Crimson Tide, which will come at UCLA on Dec. 28. IN HOME SEASON OPENERS Alabama will be playing its home opener on Thursday night and hopes to have history on its side. The Tide has a record of 42-4 when playing its first home game of the season at Coleman Coliseum. That number dates back to the first-ever game played at Coleman Coliseum (won 86-65 vs. Samford on Feb. 1, 1968). 2012-13 TOP PERFORMANCES CATEGORY OPPONENTS Points 36 by Trevor Releford at LSU, 2/23/13 30 by Nate Wolters, South Dakota State, 11/9/12 Field Goals Made 14 by Trevor Releford at LSU, 2/23/13 10 by Nate Wolters, South Dakota State, 11/9/12 Field Goal Attempts 22 by Rodney Cooper at LSU, 2/23/13 18, Kentavious Caldwell-Pope, Georgia, 2/12/13 3-Pointers Made 5, 4x, last by Trevor Lacey at Ole Miss, 3/5/13 5, 3x, last by Jabari Brown, Missouri, 1/8/13 3-Pointers Attempted 9, 2x, last by Trevor Lacey at Ole Miss, 3/5/13 12, Kentavious Caldwell-Pope, Georgia, 2/12/13 Rebounds 11, Nick Jacobs at Mississippi State, 1/16/13 18 by Jarnell Stokes, Tennessee, 1/26/13 Assists 8, by Trevor Lacey vs. Maryland, 3/26/13 13 by Phil Pressey, Missouri, 1/8/13 Steals 5, 6x, last by Trevor Releford vs. Northeastern, 3/19/13 5, 2x, last by Anthony Hickey, LSU, 2/23/13 5 by Moussa Gueye vs. Kentucky, 1/22/13 8 by Nerlens Noel, Kentucky, 1/22/13 6

RELEFORD IS SEC ACTIVE LEADER Guard Trevor Releford begins the season ranking at the top of the SEC active leaders in points, assists and steals. Releford currently has 1,311 career points, 300 assists and an Alabama program record 195 steals as he begins his senior year. RELEFORD NAMED TO BOB COUSY AWARD WATCH LIST, PRESEASON ALL-SEC Trevor Releford was named to the watch list of candidates for the 2014 Bob Cousy Collegiate Point Guard of the Year Award, which marks the second consecutive season Releford has been selected to the list. Releford, a Preseason First Team All-Southeastern Conference honoree, led the Crimson Tide with 14.9 points and 2.1 steals per game, while also connecting on a team-best 40.7-percent from beyond the arc last season. The Kansas City, Mo., native finished with 70 steals a year ago, which ranks third best in program history, on his way to becoming the program s alltime steals leader. RANDOLPH AIMING TO BECOME FIRST ACADEMIC ALL-AMERICAN Junior guard Levi Randolph has some lofty expectations on the court, but it is his ultimate goal off the court that he would consider his crowning achievement at Alabama. The Madison, Ala., native hopes to become the first-ever Academic All- American in program history. As a sophomore, Randolph earned CoSIDA/Capitol One Academic All-District First Team honors, becoming the first Alabama player to earn that honor since 2003. Randolph, a two-time SEC Academic Honor Roll recipient, maintains a 3.48 GPA as a marketing major and has been named to the Dean s List in every semester of his college career (3.1 GPA or better). On the court, the 6-5, 205-pound guard has been equally as impressive. Last season, Randolph ranked second on the team in rebounds (4.1 rpg), third in field goal percentage (.431), three-point field goal percentage (.341), assists (59), steals (39) and minutes (30.2 mpg) and was fourth on the squad in points (8.1 ppg). A MILESTONE REACHED Guard Trevor Releford scored 26 points in the loss at then-no. 10 Missouri on Jan. 8. In doing so, he became the 46th player in program history to reach the 1,000-point plateau, doing so in just 82 contests. The Kansas City, Mo., native comes into the Texas Tech game with 1,311points, which places him in 26th on the school s all-time scoring leaders list. HE S BACK! Junior center Carl Engstrom returns to the lineup after receiving a medical redshirt last season due to a knee injury. Engstrom injured his knee just minutes into the Tide s seventh game of the season in a loss at Cincinnati. At the time of his injury, the Ystad, Sweden native had earned a starting spot and was averaging 3.3 points and 2.7 rebounds a game. He has played a total of 53 games in his Alabama career. GETTING IT DONE IN THE CLASSROOM The men s basketball program earned the NCAA Division I Public Recognition Award last season, given to programs that had multi-year APR scores in the top 10 percent of their respective sports for the 2011-12 academic year. Based on multi-year averages, Alabama men s basketball led all SEC basketball programs with a 995 score, including a perfect score of 1000 in the 2011-12 academic year. The Tide was also one of just two NCAA Division I schools to earn the award in both football and men s basketball, with Duke being the other. WAITING IN THE WINGS A pair of scholarship players will it sit out the 2013-14 campaign due to NCAA transfer rules. Junior guard Ricky Tarrant came to Alabama from Tulane, where he was a two-time all-conference honoree. In his two-year career, Tarrant scored 1,013 points, had 51 double-figure scoring games and 20 games of scoring 20-plus points. He earned Conference USA Freshman of the Year honors in 2012 and was an all-district performer in 2013. Sophomore forward Michael Kessens arrived at the Capstone from Longwood University, where he was named to the mid-major Freshman All-American team by CollegeInsider.com. He averaged 13.7 points and 8.8 rebounds, while collected 33 doublefigure scoring games and 11 double-doubles. PRESEASON EUROPEAN TRIP Alabama had a head start to the campaign, as the men s basketball team took part in a European Tour from August 8-18. While there, the Crimson Tide played five games in three countries (Amsterdam, Netherlands; Antwerp, Belgium; Paris France) during the 10-day excursion. In addition to playing games, the team also had a chance to learn about European culture, visiting historic sites such as the Eiffel Tower, Anne Frank House, Louvre Museum and the Palace at Versailles, among other places. 2012-13 SEASON HIGHLIGHTS Alabama finished the 2012-13 season with a 23-13 overall record and a 12-6 SEC record, tied for second in the league. Alabama held 24 of its 36 opponents during the 2012-13 season to under 60 points in a game. The Tide compiled a record of 19-5 (.826) when achieving the feat. In four seasons under Grant, Alabama has held teams to 60 or fewer points a total of 76 times, going 62-14 (.816). Alabama limited opponents to scoring an average of 58.4 points per game, which ranked second in the Southeastern Conference and 18th in the nation. It also is the 12th-fewest points allowed per game in SEC history. The Crimson Tide led the SEC in league games with 9.1 steals per game. In fact, Alabama recorded 10 or more steals eight times during conference play, going 7-1 when reaching that figure. The Tide reached 10 steals or more only three times in nonconference action. When factoring in the record during the months of November (6-0), January (6-2) and February (6-2), Alabama had a combined total record of 18-4 (Alabama went 1-5 during the month of December and 4-4 in March). The Tide finished with a 21-4 record on the year when it attempted the same or more foul shots in a game than its opponent. RELEFORD NAMED DEFENSIVE ALL AMERICAN Alabama guard Trevor Releford was one of 21 players named to the 2013 Lefty Driesell Defensive All-America team, announced by CollegeInsider. com. In being selected to the team, Releford became the first Alabama player to earn the recognition in the award s four years of existence. MEN S BASKETBALL Releford was one of only two SEC players named to the 21-player list (Nerlens Noel Kentucky). Releford finished the year with 70 steals, the thirdmost in a season in program history. In doing so, the Kansas City, Mo., native became the program s all-time steals leader (194) and is the third player in program history to record 70 or more steals in season. Releford led the Tide, ranked second in the SEC and 36th in the nation in steals per game (2.1). He also topped the team in scoring (14.9 ppg), threepoint shooting (.407), free throw percentage (.824) and field goals made (167) and attempted (351). RELEFORD EARNS AP, SEC AND USBWA HONORS Junior guard Trevor Releford was named first team All-SEC by both the league coaches and Associated Press. He also earned a spot on the league s All- Defensive team and was selected to the United States Basketball Writers Association s All-District IV First Team. It was the first time since the 2008 season that a Tide player earned first-team accolades from the AP, SEC and USBWA (Richard Hendrix). It marked the third consecutive season that Releford had been named by the SEC coaches as an all-conference performer. He earned a spot on the league s all-freshman team in 2011 and was a second-team honoree in 2012. He became the first Alabama player to earn all-league honors in each of his first three seasons since Kennedy Winston achieved the feat during the 1992 (all-freshman), 1993 (first team) and 1994 (first team) seasons. Releford is the fourth Alabama player to earn a spot on the league s All-Defensive team in the eight years of its existence (the all-defensive team was chosen in 1991 and 1992, then discontinued until it was restarted in 2008). RANDOLPH EARNS ACADEMIC HONOR Guard Levi Randolph was named to the Capital One Academic All-District 4 First Team, as selected by College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA). STEALS KING With three steals at LSU on Feb. 22, guard Trevor Releford became the all-time steals leader at Alabama (He finished the season with 194 career steals). The former mark was held by Senario Hillman (2007-10), who finished with 176 takeaways in his four-year career. Releford recorded 70 steals during the 2012-13 season, which marks the third consecutive year he has had at least 60 steals in a season. His 70 takeaways places him third overall among the top-10 single-season steals leaders for a third straight season. His 60 steals as a freshman ranked eighth-best in program history and his 64 takeaways a year ago were the fourth-most in UA lore. He is the only player to have his name among the single-season steal leaders for three different years. Moreover, Releford s 1.9 career steals per game average ranks as the program s best average in the record books.
