TORQUE the Holden Club magazine March page 6 President s Report Bruce Lethborg Hi Guys, A quarter of the way through the year and the motorsport is all happening. As I write this the Grand Prix season has fired up at Albert Park and the Red Bull F1 cars have put their stamp on practice 1. The V8s have started in Adelaide with a Holden white wash, Nissan and Erebus Mercedes look like they have a bit of work to do to catch Red Bull and the others. Work for our sprint at Sandown is well on the way. Supp regs will be out soon. As with any sprint, we need helpers. Those of you with club plates can use this event to get signed off so you can get your renewal. You may even get a phone call asking if you can help, or you can call me on 0499272774. We are looking at a couple of Saturday dates at Sandown in November. Due to the resurfacing of the horse racing track, the dates this year are very limited. We now have a full executive committee. I would like to welcome Justin Howe to the committee as our treasurer. Thanks Justin for your help. Cam Chivers and I had a meeting last month with HSV owners committee to discuss an alliance for next year. It was a very positive meeting, and many things were discussed. Cam and I are meeting again with them to see if their members would like to get things happening for next year. We will most likely run a couple of events this year to see how things go. The club had a team run in the Porsche Club of Victoria s six hour regularity. Unfortunately the team weren t too regular. Everyone in the team had troubles starting with Tony Cott s lovely Camaro on Saturday, having a loud ticking noise coming from the engine which turned out to be a part of the piston separating and rattling around. Next Ron Klein s V8 LC Torana was pinged for noise. Ron loaded up the car and hurried over to his exhaust guy who was just about to close for the day and had two new mufflers fitted, which made the car have the most awesome sound, only to be pinged again on Sunday, this time it was induction noise. Vlad and Phil had clutch and gear linkage problems all weekend. Phil sorted his problems out. Vlad crossed the finish line after six hours with only second gear. After running faultlessly Saturday my car started to overheat and lose power after around 6 laps on Sunday. I suspect the water pump is the culprit as the coolant didn t seem to be being pumped around the engine, ohh and a brake failure in the pits after finishing my first run. Thanks to Mark Kakouri for supplying a brake master cylinder and Tony for his help to get me back on the track Last year we finished tenth, this year..19 th, after all the troubles, team HSCCV Allsorts will return next year for more fun. Several of our members are heading to the mountain at Easter run in the regularity event. Good luck guys, hope everything goes well.i hope to join you next year. We had a small display at the Phillip Island historic event, Phil and Kim brought their LJ XU-1s Kim also had the VL Targa car there, Peter Smyth and Tim Noble had their VKs and I brought my HG Monaro. Phil and Kim displayed their Torries with the Victorian and NSW torana clubs. I think they were the biggest and most colourful display there. The 9 litre CAN AM sports car was very impressive and a sound that makes a formula 5000 sound sick. There were some nice Group A&C cars, and a few old racers as well signing autographs. If you have not renewed your membership this will be your last magazine. If you have club plates on your car and have not renewed you cannot drive your car. You only have 14 days to renew your membership, as our membership runs out on Dec 31 st, after Jan 14 you can t drive your car. The club has an obligation to Vic Roads to inform them of lapsed memberships. You have until the twelfth of May to renew, after this date Vic Roads will be informed and your club permit will be suspended. A reminder, if you are pulled over and you have a suspended permit, you are liable for a substantial fine and demerit points. Cheers Bruce

TORQUE the Holden Club magazine March page 8 Secretary's Report Phil Slater Hello fellow club members and welcome to March a month of top level motor sport with the Grand Prix and the Shannons Phillip Island Classic. I was one of six club members and part of a group of about 30 XU-1s that attended the Phillip Island event. We had so much fun commemorating 40 years of the LJ XU-1 Torana that cars came from as far away as Queensland and New South Wales to join in. I also took the Grandkids to their first AGP this year. They were more impressed with the rides and jumping castle than the racing cars but I guess to them racing is just something that Grandpa does. We have our own Sandown Sprint coming up on April 28 th and will need as many club members as possible to either help out or compete (or both) as it is our first stand alone sprint event in many years. Remember if you have Club Reg you will have to officiate to get your renewal signed and this will be your main chance this year. You will notice from the club minutes that we did not have a quorum at the last meeting so please make an effort to get to the next meeting if you have not been for a while. Phil Slater

TORQUE the Holden Club magazine March page 11 Phillip Island Classic 2013 The Phillip Island Classic was held on March 8 th to 10 th and seven club members attended on Sunday with Kim s Commodore, Bruce s Monaro, Tim s Calais, Peter s Calais, Chantelles XU-1 and my XU-1. On Saturday Kim and I were there in our XU-1s. We had a great time watching the historic racing and socializing with Holden and Torana enthusiasts from all over Australia. Todd Martin had come down from Queensland to gee us up for the Torana nationals in the Barossa Valley at Easter 2014. The feature race this year was the International Sports Car Challenge featuring Can-Am and Le Mans cars. Some of these had 8.8 liter engines like the McLaren pictured below. They looked and sounded awesome and eclipsed the F5000s which were also present. The racing was great in the historic tourers with the XU-1s taking it up to the Mustangs in Group Nc and Turbo Sierras and Skylines (one driven by Skaifey) battling with V8 Commodores and Toranas in group A. This is one of the best Historic events in the world so if you get a chance to go there next year then do it. Phil Slater
