Overview: We will drive to Beason Campground on Friday, August 3rd, 2018. Departure will be from Our Lady of Good Hope parking lot after the 9:00 daily Mass. There is no second rendezvous time. If you cannot make it for the morning departure, please let me know. Directions are included in this notice. Out-of-towners, please provide an ETA at Beason Campground. The drive to Beason Campground from Our Lady is about 2:00 hours (~100mi) and a map link is included on this email. We will camp Friday night at Beason Campground. Saturday morning we will be transported by bus and personal vehicles to begin our canoeing. The group will be transported up river to Monterey where we begin canoeing. The campsite is down river about 25 (river) miles from Monterey. This is the LONG TRIP. There is no Short trip. We will have Sat. morning Mass at the campsite concelebrated by: Fr. Glen Kohrman (South Bend). Sunday morning Mass will also be at the campsite and then it s back on the river for three hours to Winamac. Riverside Canoe Rentals will then transport us back to Beason Campground where we depart for home. River: The Tippecanoe River runs along the Eastern edge of the Tippecanoe State Park. The typical depth runs 3-4 feet. The Tippecanoe River is considered the river of lakes. It is fed and nourished by eighty-eight natural lakes (and lots of rain). It is a clean river with some silt from the farms and lakes feeding it. The bottom is mostly sand. At present, the current is running normally with an average of 4-5 mph, so the times listed below are for floating and is generous - not hard canoeing. Canoeing should be excellent by the time we canoe. However, in the 19 years we have done this trip, I would guess that we had at least some rain over the weekend at least 15 times. So be prepared! Long trip: drop off at Monterey (6-7 hours canoeing) 19th Annual Father and Son Canoe Trip August 3-5, 2018 Tippecanoe River Winamac, Indiana A novice canoer can expect to get wet. Most of your gear will be at the campsite, so anything such as cameras need to be in a watertight container. Total river miles is about 30 over two days. For the fisherman, there is good smallmouth bass, pan fish, catfish, and northern pike fishing available. Campsite: The campsite is a 25-acre property of Culver Military Academy. Water and restrooms are available at the campsite. WE WILL SHARE WITH THE CULVER FOOTBALL TEAM on Friday & Saturday Night. There is plenty of space for tents and personal vehicles. There is a large grass recreation area. There is even room for playing baseball and hitting a 5-Iron. Bring your recreation gear! Please line up your tents along the woods. NOTE: We will have use of the restroom facility ONLY when the football team in absent. Otherwise use the portable toilet. We will provide catcher s equipment, helmets, bats, balls & bases. BRING YOUR GLOVE! The little boys will have plenty of games at the main campsite by tent city. There is an indoor pavilion (~ 40 X 80 ) to use in the event of inclement weather. Hot water is available for washing dishes. Meals: I anticipate about 35 Fathers and their sons. Last year (2017), we had 155 total campers. This year, the Campmaster is Steve Kohrman. He will be the Boss for the campground. Several Dads plan to stay at the camp on Saturday and will not canoe. Chris Ley is the Chef Master. He will coordinate all meals. We will break the men and the boys into 4 groups for 4 meals: Preparation, Cooking, & Cleanup. The jobs will rotate with each meal. Meals will be prepared over campfire and cook stoves. Meals on the river are your own picnic. Friday night Hot (Group 1 prepares & cooks, cleans) (ERIC KURTZWEG) Saturday breakfast Hot (Group 2 prepares & cooks, cleans) (ANDREW SCHIPPER) Saturday lunch Picnic (bring your own) Saturday night Hot (Group 3 prepares & cooks, cleans) (PETE COOK) Saturday night Snack provided Sunday breakfast Hot (Group 4 prepares & cooks, cleans) (LUKE BAKER) Page 1 of 10

Planning: I need to know soon (NLT Sunday July 29th) to confirm canoe rental. Riverside Rentals have 35 canoes reserved and we can change that number (+/- 5) with 1 week notice. Please confirm as soon as possible if you know you can make it. A waiver release form must be signed for each person going in a canoe or kayak. I will have forms attached to this message and copies at the campsite You can also download it here) Note: Personal canoes are not encouraged as you must coordinate your own transportation. Spiritual: Our friend, mentor and diocesan priest, Fr. Glen Kohrman will be with us again. He will be going with us down the river and will be available for confession throughout the weekend. Fr. Glen will offer Mass on Saturday and Sunday. There will be a talk around the campfire on Friday and Saturday nights. Rosary will follow. The purpose is to get closer to our Lord, enkindle friendships with our sons and have a good time canoeing in the wilderness. The theme as always: Christ in all we do (even camping & canoeing). Cost: 1. Canoe rental: $70. Per canoe (includes life jacket, paddles, and cushions) 2. Camping fee: $35. Per Adult (cost of Liability insurance, portable toilet & facility rental) 3. Meals: $50. Per adult 4. Gas:?? 100 miles to Beason Campground from Fort Wayne (Cost is same as last year) I will accept a check (made out to Doug Snowball) or cash for the full amount anytime at the campground by the end of the trip. Nick Harris will collect. I will pay the upfront costs for food, camp fees and canoes myself, so as to simplify matters. A committee will purchase the food for the hot meals. The total cost for the above --- example: 3 boys, 1 Dad; same for 1 boy & 1 Dad; $155 to Doug (canoe, meals and camp fees) Extra canoe is $70 each Shared gas money Please consider a small tip for the canoe livery bus driver ($.50/person) God bless and best regards; Organizer: Doug Snowball H 260 627-5801 CP 260 437-4888 email: dougsnowball@gmail.com Campmaster: Steve Kohrman 260 450-2791 Associate Campmaster: Heron Rodriguez (Chicagoan) GROUP 1 Eric Kurtzweg C 260 615-5309 GROUP 2 Andrew Schipper C 260 450-5513 GROUP 3 Pete Cook C 540 222-2742 GROUP 4 Luke Baker C 260 444-8198 Page 2 of 10
