Introduction The following chart will help one to learn the colors and defects based on the adjective form Afal. I went through the entire Hans Wher from Alif to Yaa and wrote each color or defect that I found in a notebook. I then arranged them into chart forms to include the feminine gender along with the singular, dual and plural forms. I based the English meanings off of Ibn Mundhir s Lisaan-ul-Arab, E.W.Lane s Maad-ul- Qaamoos and ar-raazee s Mukhtaar-us-Sihaah whenever there was a need to. This document is by no means an extensive list of colors and defects merely the basic ones that every student of Arabic should be familiar with. Many others will be found in the Quran, the prophetic narrations and Islamic literature of the Muslim scholars that are not listed here. After studying from this series you will have a good working knowledge of these colors and defects. Book One covers some of the basic colors that fall under the Afal form while Book Two covers the basic defects most commonly used by the Arabs. In some cases I added what may be considered a defect along with the colors since it is by the color that the student will more easily identify when finding these words in the Arabic texts. I ask that all who find benefit from this series to make Duaa for me and that you ask Allah the Most High to guide me, forgive me of my sins and shortcomings, and grant me knowledge and sustenance. Indeed He is the Most Capable of doing so, the Generous. The weak one, Aboo Imraan Abdus-Saboor bin Tomas Maldonado al-mekseekee
Grammatical Points of Benefit A common form of adjective used for colors and defects is أف ع ل The chart below demonstrates how this form is conjugated into the male, female, dual, and plural forms. The plural is used for both male and female genders. All of the colors and defects listed in this chart are based off of the conjugated forms below. It is strongly recommended that you memorize these five forms. You will encounter many of these words in the Quraan, the Ahaadeeth, and in the works of the Ulamaa. أف ع ل أف ع لا ن ف ع لا ء ف ع لا و ان ف ع ل Female Dual Male Dual Male Singular The male and female forms are considered Mamnoo min as-sarf meaning that they never take a Tanween sign or Kasrah. Ibn Hishaam (rahimahullah) mentions in Qatar-un-Nadaa that the only time it does take Kasrah is if the definite article Al is attached to it or if it is in a noun construction form (an Idhaafah), for example: ب الا ف ض ل Or ب ا ف ض ل ك م However normally with out these two instances then you read: ب ا ف ض ل م ن ه Both the male and female plural and dual forms are not Mamnoo min as-sarf.
Some examples from the Quraan include: ح تى ي ت ب ين ل ك م ال خ ي ط الا ب ي ض م ن ال خ ي ط الا س و د { Until the white thread becomes distinct to you form the black thread.} 2: 187 إ ن ه ا ب ق ر ة ص ف ر اء { it is a yellow cow.} 2: 69 و م ن ال ج ب ال ج د د ب يض وح م ر مخ ت ل ف أ ل و ان ه ا و غ ر اب يب س ود { and among the mountains are streaks of various white and red of colors and others raven black.} 35: 27 And of course there are many more to be found within the Book of Allah.
