Royals vs. Rangers The Royals look to salvage the season finale with the Rangers today, now 0-6 this year and riding a 12-game losing streak to Texas...KC s last win was here on July 22 of last year against today s starter Yu Darvish...KC still leads the all-time series by a 277-273-1 count, including a 152-126-1 mark in Kansas City, 138-113-1 in Kauffman Stadium. Date Site Score WP LP Att. 4/20 @ Tex L, 0-1 (13) Alvarez Wood 26,898 4/21 @ Tex L, 2-6 Hamels Karns 31,320 4/22 @ Tex L, 1-2 Bush Wood 41,446 4/23 @ Tex L, 2-5 Darvish Hammel 37,177 7/14 KC L, 3-5 Perez Minor 35,591 7/15 KC L, 0-1 Leclerc Duffy 32,907 PITCHERS DUEL GOES RANGERS WAY--In what was supposed to be a nationally televised affair Danny Duffy and Cole Hamels exchanged zeroes for eight innings last night, before a pair of ninth inning opposite field hits sandwiched around a sacrifice bunt plated the game s only run in a 1-0 Texas decision...the contest was slated to air on FS 1, but the first game of the day, New York at Boston, took 16 innings and the Royals/Rangers never saw the light of day nationally...it was Kansas City s fifth consecutive loss, flipping the club s record from 44-40 entering L.A. last weekend to its present 44-45 mark...last night was also the 12th consecutive loss to the Rangers dating back to July, 2016...after allowing two hits through 8.0 innings, Duffy surrendered a single to Jonathan Lucroy, sac bunt by Delino DeShields and a blooper to left by Shin- Soo Choo to break the deadlock...it was the second time that Duff had blanked the Rangers into the eighth this year, shutting them out for 7.1 frames on April 20, a game the Royals dropped, 1-0 in 13 innings...the KC offense was stymied by Hamels all evening, going 1-for-5 with runners in scoring position with the lone knock an infield hit...eric Hosmer had his 16-game hitting streak halted with an 0-for-4. TROUBLE WITH TEXAS--Last night marked Kansas City s 12th consecutive loss to the Rangers dating back to July 22 of last year when the Royals were 3-1 winners here over today s mound opponent Yu Darvish...since that triumph, KC has scored just 22 runs in the 12 setbacks (1.8 per game), while hitting.183 as a team (71-for- 388)...the 12 straight defeats to one club matches the second longest dry spell in franchise history, as Kansas City lost 12 in a row to the Yankees from August 13, 1997 - August 18, 1998...the club record for losses against one club is 23 vs. Baltimore way back in 1969-70...the Royals avenged that dry spell by winning 15 straight over the O s during the 1987-89 seasons. BACK BELOW BREAK-EVEN--The rollercoaster ride better known as the 2017 season sees the Royals in the midst of a 5-game losing streak, the longest victory drought the club has experienced since a 9-gamer that closed April...Kansas City remains in third place, three games out in the cramped A.L. Central...this was the fourth straight year the Royals resumed post-break play with a winning record (44-43)...the 2014 club was 48-46 when the All-Star Game came around, then lost the first four games out of the break to fall to 48-50, before a 24-6 stretch put the Royals in the Wild Card hunt and eventually landed in the World Series. DAYDREAM BELIEVERS--The Royals look to snap this 5-game losing streak and when better than in the afternoon, as Kansas City has gone 14-7 in its last 21 games under the sun...kc started the year just 1-11 in matinees, but enters today 15-18 on the year thanks to the change in fortune. ACE 30 REMEMBERING YO--The morning of January 22, 2017 will always be remembered as one of the most tragic days in franchise history when word was received that pitcher Yordano Ventura had his life cut short due to a car accident in his native Dominican Republic...signed as a 17-year old in 2008, the fireballing right-hander compiled a 38-31 during his abbreviated Major League career...among many highlights, Ace will be most remembered for blanking the San Francisco Giants over 7.0 innings in Game #6 of the 2014 World Series to force a seventh and deciding game, while pitching with a heavy heart himself due to the untimely passing of his friend Oscar Tavares...to honor the late Ventura, all uniforms in 2017 will be adorned with the ACE 30 patch. SEEKING A SUNNY WIN--Ian is looking for his first daytime victory of the year, entering at 0-4 with a 4.93 ERA (23 ER in 42.0 IP) in eight afternoon starts...he went 5-2 with a 3.00 ERA (18 ER in 54.0 IP) in nine day starts in 2016, while prior to this season, he was 28-24 with a 3.67 ERA in his career during the day. STRIKEOUT STORY--Kennedy has recorded a strikeout in all 255 career outings, which is the second-longest active streak in the Majors to begin a career, trailing only David Price (262) among non-active pitchers, only Dwight Gooden (349) and Josh Beckett (335) have started their careers with longer strikeout streaks. VS. TEXAS--He s facing Texas for the second time this season and sixth all-time, going 0-2 with a 3.77 ERA (13 ER in 31.0 IP)...he held the Rangers to one run on four hits over 7.0 innings on April 22 at Globe Life Park, a contest KC dropped 2-1 on an Elvis Andrus walk-off RBI single...kennedy is 2-2 with a 2.09 ERA (9 ER in 38.2 IP) in six starts vs. the A.L. West this season, while he s posted a 6-11 record and a 3.89 ERA all-time against the division. HOPING TO END HOME HEX--Ian is also looking to snap an 11-game winless streak here at Kauffman Stadium, which dates back to a 10-0 triumph over the Twins on August 20 of last season...he s since 0-5 with a 4.55 ERA, including four losses and a 4.71 ERA in seven starts this year...he won three of his first four decisions Kennedy vs. Rangers Player AVG. STREAK SNAPPED--Kansas City first baseman Eric Hosmer had his 16-game hitting streak halted with an 0-for-4 in last night s 1-0 loss to the Rangers, coming up two games shy of his personal best of 18 in a row set in April, 2016...despite the 0 fer, Hoz has hit.368 (25-for-68) with four homers and 12 RBI in his last 17 games... he was hitting.185 after play on April 22, but since a 2-hit game against these Rangers on April 23 and in the 72 games since, he has batted.344 (95-for-276) with 46 runs, 19 doubles, a triple and 11 home runs, upping his season mark 129 points to its present.314 average...his 30 multi-hit games have all come since April 23. KC S BEST BOMBERS EVER--The Royals went homerless for just the third time in the last 12 games by dropping the 1-0 contest last night...kansas City is bearing down on its all-time single season team home run record...the club standard for homers in a season is 168 set during the 1987 campaign, with this year s unit is currently on a pace to shatter that mark with 197 roundtrippers. LOVING THE LEATHER--Kansas City has played errorless ball in five of the last six games and continues to lead the Majors in fewest errors committed with 35... the runners up are the Marlins, with a National League low 41, while the second place defense in the American League is Minnesota with 44...at the 89-game mark a season ago, the Royals had 48 errors. VS. THE WEST--Kansas City s struggles with the Rangers are the only real blip on what has been an overall solid year against A.L. West competition...with losses in six straight this year and 12 in a row over the last two seasons, the Royals enter today at 14-12 vs. the West, but 14-6 against all clubs not named TEXAS...in other divisional work, the Royals are just 13-21 within the A.L. Central, with play resuming with 10-straight intradivisional matchups starting tomorrow vs. Detroit...KC has gone 10-8 in its last 18 Central battles after an abysmal 3-13 start...the Royals are 12-7 vs. the A.L. East and will resume play with that division on the next road trip with three in Boston and three in Baltimore...the three losses last weekend in Dodger Stadium dropped Kansas City to 5-5 in Interleague play, with 10 still on the docket. PATIENCE PAYING OFF--Lorenzo Cain received his 36th walk of the year last night and enters play today just one free pass shy of his single-season best...he established his career-high in 2015 with 37 free passes. MOOSE ON RECORD PACE--Despite going homerless in his last four games, Mike Moustakas still ranks tied for third in the A.L. home run race with 25 blasts, matching Khris Davis and Logan Morrison...Moose has already broken his personal single-season best of 22 from 2015 and hit three more home runs prior to the All- Star break than any Royal in history, breaking Jermaine Dye s mark of 22 in 2000...he remains on a pace that would shatter Kansas City s long-standing club record of 36 roundtrippers hit by Steve Balboni during the 1985 season...his 25 home runs to this point translate to 46 over the remainder of the campaign. THUNDER FROM DOWN UNDER--Reliever Peter Moylan made his 41st relief appearance of the year on July 8 in Los Angeles, the 34th in which he did not allow an earned run...the 38-year old from Australia, has been nothing short of spectacular since May 24, allowing just two earned runs in a total of 15.2 innings, spanning 19 appearances, for a 1.15 ERA with 18 strikeouts...he had allowed 16 earnies through his first 15.0 frames of the year for a 9.60 ERA, though 14 of those 16 runs scored over just three appearances with two 5-run and a 4-run outing. ESKY COAXES A FREEBIE--Shortstop Alcides Escobar didn t get a hit last night, but he did receive his first walk in over a month, snapping a streak of 115 consecutive plate appearances without a free pass...he s made a club-record 260 consecutive starts at shortstop dating back to September 26, 2015, the longest active streak in the Majors, according to the Elias Sports Bureau...the last MLB team to have the same starting SS in that many consecutive games was the Orioles, who had Miguel Tejada as their starting shortstop in 284 games from April 4, 2004 through August 20, 2005...should Esky get to 285, he will have the longest such streak since Cal Ripken started 2,216 consecutive games at SS for the Orioles from 1982 to 1996. DUPE KC S SECRET WEAPON--Replay specialist and team eagle eye Bill Duplissea has not made a challenge since July 3 in Seattle when he made his 19th of the year and got a reversal on Whit Merrifield s bunt attempt in the eighth...duper is 14-for-19 for a 74% success rate, which currently tops the Majors...Duplissea also requested a Crew Chief review of Danny Espinosa s home run on June 16 in Anaheim that was flipped into a foul ball upon review, but Dupe does not receive statistical credit for a Crew Chief review...bill closed 2016 as the best in baseball at his craft with a 69.2% success rate, making good on 27 of 39 challenges, with the Mets next at 67.7% (21-for-31). AT THE HELM--The winningest manager in franchise history, Ned Yost is in his seventh full season with the club, taking the reins on May 13, 2010...he enters today two games below the.500 mark at 593-595, which is still a huge accomplishment considering he had a 198-253 mark in his first two+ seasons in charge, but is since 395-342 (.536)...his win total has shattered Whitey Herzog s previous team mark of 410 wins (1975-79)...Yost is the 16th full-time manager in franchise history and is seventh among active managers is games (2,146) and wins (1,050)...his postseason record of 22-9 represents a.710 winning pct., which is tops among all managers who have been at the helm for at least 20 postseason games...he s also 2-0 in managing the American League All-Star team, winning in both Cincinnati ( 15) and San Diego ( 16), the last two times the home field advantage was determined by the All-Star outcome...this is his second stint as a big league manager after nearly six full campaigns at the helm for the Milwaukee Brewers (2003-2008)...he compiled a 457-502 record with the Brew Crew including a 166-146 mark in his last two seasons... Yost, a catcher during his playing days, began his coaching career in the Atlanta organization, including 12 straight seasons on Bobby Cox s big league staff (1991-2002). vs. Rangers (2017) vs. Rangers (career) At Home (career) Darvish (career) Zimmerman (career) Player AVG AB H HR RBI AVG AB H HR RBI AVG AB H HR RBI AVG AB H HR RBI AVG AB H HR RBI Bonifacio.333 15 5 1 2 Butera.333 9 3 0 0 Cain.235 17 4 0 1 Escobar.105 19 2 1 2 Gordon.048 21 1 0 0 Hosmer.174 23 4 0 0 Merrifield.300 20 6 0 1 Moss.143 14 2 0 0 Moustakas.250 20 5 1 2 Perez.000 17 0 0 0 Soler.000 3 0 0 0 Torres.333 15 5 1 2.271 48 13 1 3.264 106 28 0 3.233 180 42 1 20.197 259 51 8 25.270 163 44 8 22.269 26 7 0 2.234 184 43 10 24.263 114 30 3 7.196 112 22 3 13.000 3 0 0 0.250 116 29 4 8.200 495 99 3 35.297 1227 364 25 162.265 2195 581 18 199.261 2396 626 77 317.279 1801 502 51 264.288 319 92 6 42.231 1426 329 61 197.253 1313 332 45 170.275 1345 370 42 196.260 411 107 16 55.368 19 7 0 2.667 3 2 1 1.000 3 0 0 0.167 6 1 0 0.250 8 2 0 0.273 11 3 0 1.167 12 2 0 1.143 7 1 0 1.269 26 7 4 6.222 9 2 1 1.000 3 0 0 0.333 3 1 0 0.300 10 3 0 0.250 8 2 0 0.200 10 2 0 1.500 4 2 0 0.333 6 2 0 0.333 6 2 0 0.000 3 0 0 0 Starting Pitchers Breakdown Total KC Avg.
