Performance evaluations are an educational tool used to help band directors provide a better music education for students. Using a set of criteria established at a national level, bands are judged in concert as they play music. Music is selected from a list that is graded according to difficulty; level one (easiest) to level six (most difficult). Performance evaluations are non-competitive as bands are graded against a high standard of performance rather than against each other. Bands earn individual ratings of Superior (I), Excellent (II), or Good (III), depending upon the quality of the performance. Friday, March 8 th, the Osborne Middle School Band performed at East Jackson High School before an audience and three judges. Judges gave musical critique of the performance. A very mature performance. What a wonderful gift you have given us today. Thank you and Bravo!, commented one judge. Comments were both critical and complimentary and will be used to improve future musical concerts. After the band performed, they proceeded to a separate room to sight-read music never before seen. Several minutes of study is allowed, followed by a performance of the piece from beginning to end without stops. Since there are usually performance mistakes in this part of the process, an audience is not present. One judge listens to the group, giving commentary, and an overall score. At the end of the day, the Osborne Middle School Band earned superior ratings in all possible categories. This performance for our band represents much appreciated commitment and effort from the students and parents of our band program here at Osborne Middle.

FREE HEART SCREENING FOR STUDENTS On Sunday, April 7 th, there will be free heart screenings for the middle and high school students of the Gwinnett County School District. The screenings are hosted by Simon's Fund, a nonprofit organization from Philadelphia that has been providing free heart screenings to students for the past seven years. It has checked 5,500 hearts and helped 49 students discover heart conditions. Simon's Fund reached out to us after learning about the passing of Coach Ryan Daniel, Adam Smith and Jeremy Nelson. The heart screenings will be held at the offices of the Cardiovascular Group in Lawrenceville. Physicians from this practice, as well as Children's Cardiovascular Medicine will be administering the exams. The address is 755 Walther Road in Lawrenceville. The screenings will run from 8:30 A.M. - 4:00 P.M. Each student should expect to be at their screening for 30-40 minutes. Prior to their screening, students need to register and complete a consent and medical history form. This is done online. At the screening, students will receive an ECG exam and a physical. Some students will also receive an echocardiogram, if needed. Prior to leaving, the student will know if there are any issues. If so, the student will be referred to a cardiologist (of his/her choice) for follow up. Based on past screenings, one out of every 100 students will discover an undetected heart condition. Registration opens on March 6 th. There are 300 spots available. Go to http://www.simonsfund.org/get-screened/register/ to register for a screening. If you have questions, please send an email to info@simonsfund.org.
