NEWSLETTER APRIL 2018 A MESSAGE FROM OUR PRESIDENT Hello American Bowmen Club Members, It is long overdue that the club officers write to you in a Newsletter. The past couple of months have been a flurry of activity and progress! Only a short time ago we were fixing property fencing on March 3 rd,moved range targets and other assets to the property on March 10 th, and on that same day set one 3D range and part of another including the practice range! We now have a functional American Bowmen Club range at McArthur Gulch and have successfully hosted two shoots (March 25 th & April 8 th ). Our work party participation and the sheer determination displayed by members to move the club from storage and build a new range was beyond impressive. I want to share a simple thought with you that our Vice President Pete Kopchik said after once again shooting a 3D target upon our opening, what a cool feeling when we all heard the unmistakable sound of an arrow imbedding into foam. I couldn t have said it better. As I look at the calendar and focus on the remainder of the year, I see we are only four short months away from the start of Colorado bow season, less if you count the start of pronghorn season. I sincerely hope that members have been able to start to enjoy their range. The other day I was able to shoot the east range by myself and relished in the quiet, the creek running, and my own concentration on targets placed on side hills, up, down, and all manners of uneven ground. I can feel my range estimation skill, my attention to detail and arrow placement on mountainous terrain coming back. what a cool feeling! I know I ll be better prepared this season! Upcoming Events! We are planning our annual American Bowmen Club picnic for Sunday, May 20 th at 11am with a shoot happening the day before on May 19 th. Please come join us! We will have the BBQ going, with plenty of shooting and conversation for all. I would also like to inform members that we are planning a special American Bowmen Club Youth Archery Day for July 28 th (a formal name hasn t been decided). In coordination with the Colorado Bowhunters Association, Colorado Parks and Wildlife, Kifaru International, Fit 4 The Hunt along with numerous local shops. If you would like to participate in this special day, we can use your help! Please contact VP Pete Kopchik (pkopchik@msn.com) for details of how you can help. Reminder, please read the club rules: http://www.americanbowmen.org/rules/ also posted above the sign in/out box. Thank you and please encourage any friends and fellow bowhunters to come to a shoot or shoot the range with you as a guest. (Guest registration envelopes are in the sign in/out box.) I can tell you, this is how I joined. I shot the Windy Pt location once, and I decided to become a member immediately! We have a few membership spots remaining, but going fast. See you at the range! Your President, Pete Timpano President: Pete Timpano 303-884-9705 ptimpano1@gmail.com Vice President: Pete Kopchik 720-205-1340 pkopchik@msn.com Treasurer: Jeff Fleischer 303-984-2042 jeffrey.fleischer@ warrantysolutions.com Secretary: Jim Kemper

TWO SHOOTS DOWN As President Timpano noted in his message, we have successfully hosted two shoots on the new property. On March 25th, the American Bowmen Club hosted a Grand Opening Shoot followed only two weeks later by a second shoot. The first two shoots on the new property were well attended and very positive feedback was received by many, with some saying this is the best range yet. As is often the case, it is difficult to evaluate how a layout will work without having a large number of people on the property and minor modifications have been made based on both observation and feedback. WORK PARTIES Without the hard work of dedicated members, none of us would have a range to enjoy. The club s five-year lease on the State Trust Land property started February 1, 2018. Numerous trips were made to the new property working on fulfilling the requirements of the Conditional Use Permit while planning both the site-in range and hillside courses. The first work party on the new property was scheduled for February 24th, but weather and a conflict with the club s annual pheasant hunt led to a poor turnout. Many of the 38 members who maintained their memberships through 2017, along with numerous others, sacrificed the next four weekends working to get the new range up and running. Our next Work Party is scheduled for Saturday, April 28 th. Start time is 9am. Bring gloves, we will be clearing the area south of the barn of boards, poles, etc. so that mowing can take place. Additionally, the area to the north of the long building (picnic area) will be readied for mowing and the installation of a BBQ and serving area. The State Land Board has approved expanded parking for up to 80 vehicles on the property. There is a great deal of work ahead of us to make this a reality before the next shoot. As usual, there is also work to be completed on the hillside courses. An insert order has been placed through RMS Gear. Thanks to Tom Clum for making the trip to Rinehart and saving us a great deal on shipping charges. Unfortunately, it is unlikely that we will take delivery prior to the next scheduled shoot, some targets will need to be changed out since their inserts are in such rough shape. AMERICAN BOWMEN CLUB PICNIC We are planning our annual American Bowmen Club picnic for Sunday, May 20 th at 11am with a shoot happening the day before on May 19 th. Please bring a side dish or dessert and join us (burgers, brats and dogs will be provided by the club We will have the BBQ going, with plenty of shooting and conversation for all. Let s fill these picnic tables to capacity. YOUTH ARCHERY DAY July 28, 2018 has been set as the date for (what we hope to be the first annual) American Bowmen Club Youth Archery Day. The CBA and CPW have both reserved trailers and equipment for the day, Kifaru International is providing funding to pay for food, numerous local shops are interested in being part of the day and Fit 4 The Hunt will be running an Alpha Bowhunting Challenge type athletic competition scaled down for youth. Numerous archery games will be planned and we would like to put together a goody bag of archery related items for each participant to take home. Organizations have and are being contacted for both event ideas and possible items for participants. We are also reaching out to shops, archery/outdoor organizations and manufacturers hoping to obtain larger donations (a youth bow, arrows, lessons, range time ) that can be put into a bucket-type raffle where each registered participant receives a ticket to put into the bucket for the prize they would like to win. Please contact Pete Kopchik at pkopchik@msn.com with any thoughts you have regarding events for the day, possible goody bag items or contacts you may have to the archery/outdoor industry.
