NEWS June 2017 Number 46 Tyre Regulations The Tyro ethic has been one of fair play to all drivers and teams on and off the track, specifically designed to keep as low as possible the investment needed to keep racing. Of late teams have been purchasing tyres and holding them ready for the time to make a change. There is nothing wrong with this procedure at first sight, but my "economy" thoughts come into play. For those who cannot afford to have a new spare set ready, it is not fair to let others put new tyres on at the last minute. When perhaps they feel it will give them an advantage because a wet weekend is ahead. The Tyro Rules state - The tyres fitted on the kart when it arrives on Saturday are the tyres for the weekend unless they do not conform to the tread regulation. The only change to this is if new tyres are ordered in advance and in that case they must be fitted prior to going onto the circuit for the first time. The use of multiple sets of race tyres is not permitted; non race sets will be marked. Thus from this date the regulations will be changed to read - The tyres fitted on the kart when it arrives on Saturday are the tyres for the weekend. The only change to this is if new tyres are ordered in advance and in that case they must be fitted prior to going onto the circuit for the first time. Teams wishing to fit their set of new tyres for a coming race meeting must inform CGC by email to arrive no later than the Thursday evening prior to the race meeting. The use of multiple sets of race tyres is not permitted, non race sets must be presented to be marked before the new tyres are used. A single old tyre may be used in an emergency should a new tyre be damaged during a meeting. This change will level the playing field for those who can or cannot afford to have a spare set of new tyres. Off to Wombwell So all systems go for our trip to Wombwell. See the pits layout below Another superb weekend at Shenington, weather great, circuit great, drivers on form, what more could you ask for? The track was very quick with some drivers hitting 12,700revs, absolutely the engine limit! The new format of 10 minute test sessions gave everyone the chance to test without pushing themselves, their engines and their tyres too far. Race day started with 10 minutes timed practice which set the grid for the first 10 minute heat. The positions for the other two heats were set using the procedure that makes sure each driver has exactly the same grid position totals. In this way driver's basically have a front middle and back grid slot. The sum of the points earned in the heats deciding the grid for the final. The 1st = 0, 2nd = 2, 3rd =3 point scheme was used to decide the final grid. Star of timed practice was the vastly improving Lucas Romanek, chased by the ever quick Jack Godden, with young Joshua Leivers next up. Through the heats it was a Jack and Lucas show, with Jack taking the three wins having Lucas in second throughout. In third each time was Alex Tuzzeo and Josh Raistrick was always in the top five, but some surprises as Leo Robinson and Joshua Leivers gathered a great set of heat points.
The final was a thriller as Lucas and Jack demonstrated all that is good about Tyro racing. But it could have been better had Alex not had a sticking throttle that took him out on the second lap. Lucas leading, Jack tried every version of trying to overtake that he, or I, could think of! But holding a very steady line Lucas held him off at every point. Trying the "outside in" manoeuvre four times but failing, trying the "inside out" manoeuvre another three or four times but failing. Jack was held off at times by Lucas taking the wrong side approach to the chicane blocking off an undertake. So Jack too tried to get on the outside exiting Stratford only for Lucas to cleverly block him off at the chicane. Standing at Stratford I felt I could hear the two guy's brains working as they tried to outdo each other. In another class this could not happen, for sure they would have run into each other whilst executing these actions; great drive guys! Further back Joshua Leivers and Kyle Levinson were driving out of their skin to take third and fourth ahead of Leo. Throughout the racing the Georgie Chapman lap record of 52.10secs was tested, but 52.18 from Jack (twice) and Joshua Leivers and 52.16 from Josh Raistrick, were just not quite there. Race Suits and Things Just a reminder that both Jonny and I have race suits, second hand and new, if any of you are interested? Does anyone else have kit that we can be offering to new drivers to reduce the cost of their karting? We still have two second hand karts available (Gennaro on eastlinkuk@aol.com and Phil on philipwoodruff@aol.com) contact them direct. It is possible to purchase an old fashioned nose cone at a knock down price direct from Tim Gillard - tim@gillardracingkarts.co.uk. Why do that? Well it is a little foolish to risk a new type more expensive nose in testing, that is why you will see the drivers using an old nose and fitting a new style nose for the racing. A packed pits greeted us on the Friday evening let alone Saturday morning, a big race meeting was ahead! The weather promised a good morning but a dreadful afternoon, so everyone was keen to get out at soon as possible. The first couple of sessions were dry but then the weather came in just a little earlier than promised. Being young people there were drivers who just wanted to get back on the track, monsoon or
not. However some decide that as it was to be dry on Sunday it was not worth having an incident that could ruin the weekend. As promised Sunday was dry and some good racing was ahead. Green indicates the best driver performance of the race. Yellow a package. Red the driver's best time of the meeting.
The third heat was great with the top guys from the back having a really tough time working their way through, up to 7 in a row for most of the race. With pole man Robbie faltering as they crossed the line with carb problems, it was Jack who disappeared off into the distance, with the rest of the grid stringing out it did make the race a little pedestrian. Not often a topic of Tyro conversation was a number of people saying how boring the final was; well you cannot have magic racing every single time! Lots of good things in the racing, just look at the number of yellow strips as more and more drivers get to grips with "packages of laps". Reminder a "package" makes you very difficult to be overtaken. One good point about the final was that almost everyone did their own fastest lap, which for some was their fastest ever round Fulbeck; great stuff! The Summer Cup When we meet at Wombwell it will be the first round of our Summer Cup. For this competition we will run to the same point scheme as the Tyro Championship has run in the past (10 down to 1 for the first 10 drivers in the heats and 30 down to 3 for the first 10 drivers in the final). In each event we will add points according to who is the fastest at the end of the day, starting with the number of Tyro who were in the races, counting down a point at a time until the slowest driver on race day has an additional 1 point. In the Summer Cup, the best three race day points including the" fastest driver points" for a driver, will set the final competition order. Well that's it for now, see you at Wombwell. Steve
