Introduction from the Captain - Mr David Ford Hi everyone Firstly, let me thank everyone who made Captain s Day so memorable. We had exactly 100 players and 130 for dinner, the majority of whom had listened carefully to the dress code and arrived in full Loudmouth and other bright, if questionable, regalia! There is no truth in the scurrilous suggestion that I m on some form of commission from that website. Aaron James proved to be an extremely entertaining Master of Ceremonies and very few escaped his acerbic wit. I ve received many kind comments, both written and verbal over the quality of the hospitality, on and off-course and the music, so it seems a good time was had by all. Thanks to all of the staff for their hard work. We also raised 1,000 for ACCA on the night, a great effort. The Captain s Prize was won by Mike Hassid with a very respectable 37 points on a low scoring day (perhaps the port and the wine were contributing factors?). The victory, however, was overshadowed by the look on Brian Evans s face, when, having achieved a hole in one on the 9th of Pines, he realised he would have to provide 100 people with a drink. He s due to be released from intensive care shortly. Club Captain David Ford and Dan Henderson than it s worth, it would be remiss of me not to congratulate Joe the Pro, still shooting his age at 85. It was a pleasure to join him at his Invitational. The winner of the Jar on the Bar for June was Iain Callaghan; well done Iain. We have delayed the next draw until Gala Week, by which time the jar should be almost full. In terms of off-course matters, I am delighted to be able to announce a new partnership with the Club and Blevins Franks. The driver of this from Blevins side has been Dan Henderson, who is well known to members and who, in a short time, has become an important asset to PA, not least for his golfing prowess. Such a partnership will significantly benefit the Members Fund in terms of supporting tournaments throughout the year. I often hear rumour and counter rumour around the club in relation to issues such as Non Habitual Residence and taxation and through this new relationship we hope that those members who are interested will be able to access the expertise and skill set of Dan and his specialist advisors. On the subject of Gala Week, as the theme is Thrillers and Horror stories, this month s Pop Quiz is Which English record producer wrote Thriller recorded by Michael Jackson? I ve relented on not using email, so the first correct answer to d@vidford.com wins a sleeve of balls. Happy Golfing! A group of 20 members recently headed north to play Royal Obidos and the newly opened West Cliffs on the 10th July. The trip was expertly organised by Sue and Andy Georges and everyone enjoyed the challenge of the courses on the ocean. That challenge was added to by having to wear sweaters in Portugal in mid-july. Although I wouldn t normally mention birthdays in this report, given that I m bound to miss someone and cause more trouble Club Captain David Ford with his wife Kay, sons Rhys and Hywel and daughter Bee page 2

Director of Golf - Monthly Report June main event was of course the Captain s Day which was a great success, very colorful and I would like to congratulate our Club Captain David Ford to put up such a day of course with the help of his family. We had a record 100 players and 130 attending a fabulous dinner and great dancing. The big winner of the day was Mike Hassid with a fantastic score of 37 points (BB3 5). Congratulations to Mike! June is normally a quite month at the Golf Course and therefore it was time to do a lot of maintenance work on the golf course which will be explained more in details in the greens committee report below and it is already started to look a lot greener and greens are looking as healthy as ever and are very true maybe unfortunately not as fast as some of our members would like them to be. Congratulations to James Porter who won the Monthly Stableford with the score of 35 points and Sally Evans who won the June Medal with a great score of 68. JJW is organizing The International Pairs League and the 3 National qualifiers are to be played at San Lorenzo on 5th August 2017 ( 50 for PA Members), on 20th August 2017 at Pinheiros Altos ( 35 for PA members) and on 6th September 2017 at Penina ( 35 for PA members). Each of the qualifier includes green-fee, buggy and lunch at the respective courses. The winner of each of those qualifier will qualify for the World Final to be played this year at Penina from 6th until 10th November 2017. If you wish any more information do not hesitate to contact the Golf Office at Pinheiros Altos. With the excess of tourism in the Algarve, robbery crimes have also increased and therefore we ask everyone to be vigilant and Mens Roll Up June Winner Tony Hickey receives his Voucher for Casa dos Pinheiros to make sure you do not leave valuables at easy access to such crimes on and off the golf course and also report if you see any individuals who should not be on the Golf Course. Coming up is of course our gala Week and I am looking forward to have as many of you taking part in the week whether it is every day or even one of the optional day! Wish you all great golfing! The temperatures have soared and many of us have resorted to buggies, make sure you take plenty of water on the course with you. The medal was finally played on 28th June and organised by Cathy Harper. The bad news is there is another one the following week all character building! Instead of getting one course for the monthly medal on 7th June I had to do a quick turn around and change it to a stableford as we were on two courses. The Captain s Choice this month was a Shambles where the ladies played a team game and were given 3 free kicks and 3 free throws (you try saying that out loud!) I think we all decided kicking a golf ball is not easy! page 9

The 21st June saw us playing a better ball at San Lorenzo, Paula Burke and Diana Collins won with a formidable 44 points, not far behind we had 3 pairs all with 43 points so there was some serious countbacks to do. Following a great Captain s Day our Past Ladies Captains finally had their day on 12th June. It was a lovely day and I think they enjoyed the champers and smoked salmon on the 10th tee not sure how good it was for the golf though!!! This month we had a ladies friendly away against Levante and I am delighted to say with a 3/2 win, we were doing a lot of giving - well done ladies. We also had a mixed friendly at Carvoeiro but were not so lucky with a 5/3 loss. Mai finally managed to present the prizes for the 2016/2017 Wainwright competition as we were all in town. Well done to Susan Russell for winning the trophy and Diana Collins page 10

as runner up, Hilary Jessup won the Plate with myself as runner up. The Jar on the Bar: Although our Social Section is in its infancy we are delighted that non golfing ladies are starting to be included in our events, I was delighted some of them joined me for wine and nibbles on the 14th after golf. Lynn Nobbs organised a lunch at Menta Pimenta which was thoroughly enjoyed by all. May was a quieter month for the Jar, we raised 289.60 from those who went in the water and the draw to guess the amount raised 170 which was won by Iain Callaghan who guessed 293.00. Keep those euros coming they are going to a very good cause. As many are away at the moment our next draw will be done at the end of July. Social Golf - by Iain Callaghan Texas Scramble is an ideal format for Social Golf. All of the team members become involved from the outset - from the very first decision on which ball to select after the drives from the first tee and thereafter everyone gets the chance to have their say and to contribute to the team result. As a consequence, Texas Scramble can sometimes be a bit slow but the ten teams rose to the challenge over Pines/Corks and Olives/Pines completing more or less on the four hour mark, so well done everyone! A good turnout of 40 players, complimented by the Who s Who of P.A. with a quarter of the participants made up of past captains (both mens and Ladies ) including the current Lady Captain, Captain, Vice-Captain and the President. It was good to see John & Frances McCarthy and their guests attend their first Social Golf and to welcome new member, Barry Hawley-Green - as prize winners, I hope they ll be encouraged to repeat the experience. Stella and I, as organisers, came in for a bit of [good natured] banter, heckling and napkin throwing for appearing on the winning teams from both courses and my response - in an event where 60% of the players walk off with a prize, if you can t fix it to pickup a bottle of wine yourself, you shouldn t be organising it in the first place!. The day s victors were:- Olives/Pines Pines/Corks 1st Orlando Hill 1st Iain Callaghan Cheever Hardwick Barry Hawley-Green Kieran Nagle Wendy Collins Stella Jeffrey Melody Cotterill 2nd Peter Mills 2nd David Pirret Knut Pedersen Andy Watkins Zoe Pirret Helen Mills Susie Hardwick Shona Callaghan 3rd Heinz Kura 3rd John McCarthy Brian Scott Pat Ryan Marian Hill Frances McCarthy Adrienne Buth Margaret Ryan The next Social Golf event, 4 Clubs plus Putter, will be on 9th July organised by Sue Georges and yours truly. page 11

Report from the Greens Committee The committee met on the 17 July together with course managers, Sesinando, Ana and Marco and Director Christophe. In our June report we listed the new equipment which STRI had recommended the club purchase and also the work which should be prioritised again as recommended by STRI. We are pleased to report that progress is being made and all the new equipment is either in use or on its way The exceptions are the fairway groomer rake and the greens groomers which are planned for year end. Greens staff numbers have increased to 23. The course has been tined and scarified and fertilised and the new growth is starting to show. The extensive sanding will probably take place after Gala week so as not to cause too much inconvenience. General maintenance work is showing in improved fairway surfaces and the removal of most of the fairway weeds (we are sure some members will be able to spot some still left), bunkers are being reviewed for sand quantities and quality. There have been two critical comments from members about the course, the first criticism is that the greens are not as quick as they would like them to be. The answer to that is that we are working on increasing the bent grass percentage of the grasses on the greens. We cannot do so if we cut the grass too low. This is temporary and we believe the greens look good and put well. We will be increasing the use of the roller. three times a week from now on. This should eliminate the problem. Over the winter months we plan to prune and remove more trees. The committee feel the time is right to review the trees on the corner of the eight of Corks. They have grown to a height which makes a long shot to the green impossible except for the very longest players. Perhaps members would like to let us know their views? In a similar review we feel the pot bunkers in front of the green on 3rd of corks are unfair and out of keeping with the course. A grass hollow (as in 6 of Corks is being considered). The committee wish to make the course fair but challenging without altering its characteristics and personality. There is evidence that visitors are often wary of playing PA as they consider it too hard! Members may agree? The trees in front of some bunkers have grown to a stage which was not intended and in some case also in front of tees (5th of Pines). Overall the committee believe that with the support of investment from management and a dedicated greens staff we are heading in the right direction. As always we are anxious to maintain and build on the improvements. The Committee wish members a happy and successful Gala week and will keep members informed of course progress. Stewart Harper, Chairman, David Ford, Captain, Duncan Evans. The second criticism is that some tees have very long grass which makes teeing up difficult! The tees are to be cut page 12
