Chairpersons Notes St.Barnabas have had mixed fortunes since our last newsletter. Unfortunately at the time of writing, the Ladies were defeated by Claddagh Gaels of Luton in the Warwickshire League Final but on a positive note the Mens footballers have just defeated Roger Casements to win the John Scanlon Cup thus securing the club s first piece of silverware this season! The hurlers have a number of games yet to play in the All Britain Shield. The very best of luck to all teams in their remaining fixtures. Our underage team has gone from strength to strength this year! The team has played well throughout the season and this was topped by them winning the Oliver Begley memorial shield on 6th September. A massive congratulations to the players and trainers for all the hard work they have put in over the year. Training still continues for another while so if there are any young players out there (boys & girls) who want to give it a try, just get in contact! Not only did our underage players showcase their talents at the Hayward House fundraising day but the present reserves faced the past Barnabas team. On this occasion, the past team came out well on top and it left many wondering why some of those players weren t still togging out for Barnabas! Maybe we ll see some of these guys come out of retirement next year!? Off the field, the club held its Barnabas Got Talent night in the Greyfriars. Thank you to all that came to support the night. A special thanks to the judges Michelle, Paul, and Darren, to the MC Martin, to all the acts and of course to the two ladies who organised the whole event, Una & Orlaith. Go raibh míle maith agaibh go léir! Our East Midlands Civil/Barnabas gear has now arrived! Some of our players are already sporting this gear so if you see it around and want to put an order in, just email BarnabasGAC@gmail.com. We have polo shirts (kids & adult sizes) and gear bags! Our next big social event, which is the highlight of the Barnabas calendar each year, is the dinner dance!! It s on 22nd November so save the date and spread the word! Tickets can be purchased from any member of the committee so book your table now. Nicola Lynch Chairperson, St.Barnabas GAC 2

Plucky Barnabas Hurlers Defeated in Debut County Final St Barnabas contested their first ever county hurling final on 31st August against John Mitchels of Birmingham. Having accounted easily for Roger Casements in their final group match to seal their place in the final, the men from Nottingham travelled to Pairc na heireann expecting a good performance and hoping this would be enough to put the team in a position to challenge Mitchels. Despite a bright start from St Barnabas two early goals from John Mitchels put the team under huge pressure. John Mitchels kept up the pressure and although Barnabas got more of a foothold in the game through points from Conor Robbins, two more goals before half time left the men from Nottingham with a mountain to climb in the second half. John Mitchels added two more goals in the second half with St Barnabas responding through points from Conor Robbins, Niall McNamee and Colm McBride. Although the game was lost St Barnabas continued to battle right until the final whistle. Final Score: John Mitchels 6-12 St Barnabas 0-8 Left: The St.Barnabas Hurling team who took to the field in their recent County Final vs John Mitchels On the day Barnabas could not cope with the skill and intensity of John Mitchels. However they represented their club with pride and if this group of players stays together success will surely follow. Next up for the team is the final game of the All Britain Shield league phase against St.Declans on 5th October with a potential quarter final taking place on 19th October. Team: Jack Crowley, Ronan Dirrane, Dave Byrne, Brian Kennedy, Liam Greaney, Michael Dillon, Cian Doyle, Niall McNamee, Colm McBride, Conor Robbins, Sean Dirrane, David Millea, Fergal O Callaghan, Jack Duffy, Mick Phelan Subs: Pat Curran, Rossa Dirrane, Colin 4 Heffernan, Chris McDonald, B Gaffney, Paddy Flavell, S McNamara, Luke O Hara, Pat Barry
Yet another successful year for Barnabas Got Talent at the Greyfriars Club in August; the night witnessed some familiar faces along with some new ones! The Winners on the evening were the very talented Meabh De Faoite and Clare Ni Mhongain (pictured right). Congratulations to all who took part on the evening and a huge thank you to Una and Orlaith for organising this year s event and to everyone who came down and supported. See you back next year with more new talent!! 5
Senior Footballers Capture John Scanlon Trophy Following a disappointing exit in the Senior Championship Semi Finals, the senior mens footballers ended their season on a high by capturing the John Scanlon cup. The lads defeated Coventry s Roger Casements on a scoreline of 0-19 to 3-06 and take some well-deserved silverware to show for their efforts this year. Senior team manager Chris O Hara on the victory: After a frustrating 2014 campaign I have to say that the performance put in by the lads to win the John Scanlon Cup was tremendous. The squad on the day was once again tight for numbers due to a number of lads still out injured, others being away and a few more unavailable. The way the lads took the game on from the start is the way in which the game is there to be played every week, everyone took responsibility for their own performance, the shape was good, the work ethic correct, the honesty 100% and the decision making by the lads with ball was the best it has been all year. Lets hope that we use the victory as a foundation now to push on and get back to consistent high level performances in Warwickshire. 6

Ladies Lose out to Claddagh Gaels The Ladies trained hard in preparation for their last match of the season against Claddagh Gaels of Luton in the League Final. Unfortunately the ladies came up short against a strong Claddagh Gaels outfit but they can be very proud of their efforts this season and look forward to building on this and competing for more silverware next season.
