A TRIBUTE TO MR. FORD William Clay Ford (1925-2014) Detroit Lions Owner and Chairman, 1964-2014 Beginning Week 1 this season, the Detroit Lions introduced a special jersey patch displaying the letters WCF in honor of the franchise s late owner, Mr. William Clay Ford. The patch will appear on the left shoulder of all Lions players jerseys for the 2014 season as a tribute to one of the NFL s original statesmen. Mr. Ford passed away on March 9 at the age of 88 and owned and directed the Lions franchise during a span of 50 years. Through fi ve decades, his unwavering leadership provided stability to an organization, its fans and the community when most professional sports franchises cycled through numerous ownership changes and franchise moves. Mr. Ford remained steadfastly committed to ensuring the Lions were always a vital component to the Detroit community and the state of Michigan. THE NFL REMEMBERS MR. FORD NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell: For fi ve decades, Mr. Ford s passion for the Lions, Detroit, and the NFL was the foundation of one of the NFL s historic franchises. As an NFL owner, Mr. Ford helped bring the NFL through enormous periods of change and growth, always guided by his commitment to what was best for the NFL and his beloved Lions. All of us in the NFL extend our heartfelt sympathy to Mr. Ford s wife Martha, Bill Ford, Jr. and the entire Ford family. Dallas Cowboys Owner Jerry Jones: I ve literally been at owners (meetings) when an owner came up and met Mr. Ford for the fi rst time, and the owner was a new owner in the NFL. I was standing right with him and the owner talked about how his granddad had been a Ford dealer in Texas, in the depths of Texas, and he literally teared up when he talked about what Ford, what the brand and what the individuals stood for and had stood for in his evolving to the point that he could buy an NFL football team. He actually teared up and showed that kind of emotion, and that was (former Minnesota Vikings owner) Red McCombs. Late Buffalo Bills Owner Ralph Wilson, Jr: I was deeply saddened to hear of the passing of Bill Ford. He was a man of great integrity who loved his family and his Lions. Bill was well respected within our league as well as the city of Detroit and his contributions to both were numerous. We have all lost a good friend with his passing. My deepest sympathies and condolences go out to his family and many friends. Lions Hall of Fame TE and Assistant Director of Pro Personnel Charlie Sanders: I ve always just enjoyed being around him just to watch him laugh. He was a cheerful owner, you know, upbeat, always positive. I have a lot of memories, but when I think of him I just think of a man that was very fair and enjoyed people and enjoyed people that had the same desires that he had. Most of those are centered around the Detroit Lions organization. Former Lions WR Herman Moore: Every single game that he was in the locker room, we at least spoke, or he would be in the locker room. I appreciated that from our owner. That s a real moment that fans don t know about the commitment that he would show to us players.

WELCOME, HEAD COACH JIM CALDWELL JIM CALDWELL Head Coach Years with Lions: 1 Years as NFL Head Coach: 4 Years in NFL: 14 As the Lions new head coach, Jim Caldwell brings 37 years of coaching experience to Detroit, including 13 previous years in the NFL and 24 years on the college level. Two Super Bowl titles and three appearances in the NFL s championship game highlight his coaching resume, which includes leading the Indianapolis Colts to an AFC Championship and a berth in Super Bowl XLVI as head coach following the 2009 season. COACHING OVERVIEW Hired as head coach for the Detroit Lions January 14, 2014. Coached in three Super Bowls with Indianapolis (XLI and XLIV) and Baltimore (XLVII) and won two Super Bowl titles (Indianapolis and Baltimore). In fi rst year as head coach for Indianapolis (2009), he won the AFC Championship and led the franchise to Super Bowl XLIV. He became the fi rst NFL coach to win his fi rst 14 games and the fi fth rookie head coach to reach the Super Bowl. One of four head coaches to produce 24+ regular-season wins and a Super Bowl berth in their fi rst two career seasons as head coach. Holds a 26-22 (.542) regular-season record in three seasons as an NFL head coach, including two seasons with at least 10 wins. Led the Colts to two consecutive AFC South division titles in 2009 and 2010. In eight of the 10 seasons Caldwell coached in Indianapolis, the Colts ranked in the Top-10 in total offense eight times and six times in the Top-5. From 2003-09, Caldwell was the Colts quarterbacks coach and was also promoted to assistant head coach and associate head coach during that time. He worked closely with QB Peyton Manning and the team s quarterbacks. During that span, Indianapolis set NFL records with seven consecutive seasons fi nishing with 11+ wins (6, Dallas 1976-81) and 12+ victories (4, Dallas, 1992-95). Manning won all four of his NFL MVP (2003, 2004, 2008, 2009) awards under Caldwell s tutelage. Two of his quarterbacks, Manning (Super Bowl XLI) and Ravens QB Joe Flacco (Super Bowl XLVII) were named Super Bowl MVPs following their teams respective championship runs. Led the Ravens offense to a 5-2 record after taking over as offensive coordinator late in the 2012 season as the team averaged 400.6 yards per game during that span. ASSEMBLING HIS TEAM In his fi rst season in Detroit, Caldwell wasted no time putting together his coaching staff. Headlining that search were the additions of defensive coordinator Teryl Austin and offensive coordinator Joe Lombardi, each of whom have won a Super Bowl with Baltimore and New Orleans, respectively. Combined, six of the 10 new Lions assistant coaches have won a Super Bowl championship. NEW LIONS COACHES Teryl Austin (Defensive Coordinator) Jim Bob Cooter (Quarterbacks) Devin Fitzsimmons (Assistant Special Teams) Joe Lombardi (Offensive Coordinator) Tony Oden (Defensive Backs/Cornerbacks) Robert Prince (Wide Receivers) Ron Prince (Assistant Head Coach/Tight Ends) Matt Raich (Defensive Quality Control) Bill Sheridan (Linebackers) Alan Williams (Defensive Backs/Safeties) RETAINED LIONS COACHES Jason Arapoff (Coordinator of Physical Development) John Bonamego (Special Teams Coordinator) Gunther Cunningham (Senior Coaching Assistant) Terry Heffernan (Offensive Quality Control) Bobby Johnson (Assistant Offensive Line) Kris Kocurek (Defensive Line) Curtis Modkins (Running Backs) Ted Rath (Assistant Strength and Conditioning) Evan Rothstein (Special Projects) Jeremiah Washburn (Offensive Line) Jim Washburn (Defensive Line) CALDWELL S HEAD COACHING RECORD REGULAR SEASON Year Team G W L T Pct Result 2009 Ind 16 14 2.875 1st AFC South 2010 Ind 16 10 6.625 1st AFC South 2011 Ind 16 2 14.125 4th AFC South 2014 Det 5 3 2.600 - Totals 53 29 24 0.547 POSTSEASON Year Team G W L T Pct Playoff Berth 2009 Ind 3 2.667 Super Bowl XLIV 2010 Ind 1 0 1.000 AFC Wild Card Totals 4 2 2 0.500 OVERALL G W L T Pct Regular Season 53 29 24.600 Postseason 4 2 2 0.500 Totals 57 31 26 0.544 WHAT THEY ARE SAYING ABOUT JIM CALDWELL Former Indianapolis Colts Head Coach Tony Dungy: I told Martin (Mayhew) that Jim Caldwell is exactly what you re looking for. He ll lead by making people accountable and by being a role model on and off the fi eld. And with his attention to detail and history of developing quarterbacks, (Matthew) Stafford is going to flourish just like Peyton Manning did with us in Indianapolis. Baltimore Ravens General Manager Ozzie Newsome: I believe it would be difficult to fi nd anyone with the Ravens who is more respected than Jim Caldwell. That includes players, coaches and other staff members. He earned that because of the person he is and his extensive knowledge about football, including the keys to winning and his ability to teach all of that. Personally, it is a privilege to know him, and it was an honor to work with him. Denver Broncos QB Peyton Manning: Jim Caldwell has meant a great deal to me in my career. I felt like, once he got to Indianapolis, and became my quarterbacks coach, that my game really improved. It took a step up, and I thought Jim had a great deal to do with that. Baltimore Ravens QB Joe Flacco: I enjoyed my time with Jim greatly. He is a man that I will always respect as a football coach, leader and a friend. Through his calming influence and extensive knowledge of the game, he was an integral part of our success over the past few years. He will be missed by me and the Ravens.

After sustaining drives of 54, 31 and 57 yards the Lions came away empty each time, including a missed 50-yard field goal to take the lead late in the fourth quarter. QB Matthew Stafford also addressed a key missed opportunity on third down during the Lions final drive that if converted, would have potentially led to a shorter field goal attempt. The Lions attempted to run a screen play on 3rdand-4 with just 35 seconds left in the game, but Buffalo s tough defensive line thwarted the play before it began. Stafford on the Lions final offensive play: If you look at the pictures we had a great play behind it. (Jerry) Hughes did a great job of being an athlete, jumping up and batting that ball. If he doesn t do that we have three linemen out front and it s a good picture. Possibly getting a first down there at least, really shortening that field goal. With Sunday s loss in the rear view mirror and the focus now on the Vikings, the Lions have acknowledged the fact of life in the NFL that close games are a given in this League, and a complete performance is expected week in and week out. DT Ndamukong Suh on the second half against Buffalo: We obviously let them move the ball a little bit late in the game to set up for a field goal. At the end of the day, we didn t do enough on defense to hold them from scoring and that s what it comes down to. Stafford on how frustrating it was to leave points on the board: Anytime you miss opportunities it s frustrating, whether it s in the kicking game or on offense or defense. We all had our hand in this one. You win as a team and lose as team. As disheartening as the loss was, it provided a clear scope for Caldwell as he addressed the team saying that if the Lions are to be contenders come January, they need continuous improvement in all phases of the game as they prepare for Sunday s contest against Minnesota. Caldwell on rebounding after the loss to Buffalo: We had some difficulty in our kicking game, which is obvious, which is an area that we re going to have to look at to continue to try to improve, that s key. But there s a couple of things that this game told us and one of them you already know, the other is obviously something we don t. Number one is that regardless if we won or lost this game, we still have to go back and go to work. IT S A PERFORMANCE-BASED LEAGUE In recent weeks, the Lions have fallen victim to injuries all over their roster. One area in particular that has taken a beating is the running back stable. Over the past two weeks, Detroit has seen back up tailbacks Joique Bell and Theo Riddick go down, leaving veteran back Reggie Bush and former undrafted rookie free agent George Winn to pick up the slack. Last Sunday against Buffalo, Winn was needed to give Bush some relief and try to help keep an injury-ridden backfield afloat. Along with those pressures, the Lions were going up against arguably one the top defense fronts in the NFL in

the Buffalo Bills. Winn continued to do what he did so well in the preseason, find the seam and pound it, as he showed poise and finished off the fourth quarter for Bush as the Lions go-to option on the ground. On the day, Winn was able to turn in a solid afternoon debut with 48 yards on 11 carries. Caldwell on Winn s performance vs. Buffalo: I thought he was gritty, which we knew we d get a real gritty performance from George. He s a good, tough runner and he s going to try to get you the tough yards. I think he did that. The rookie s valiant effort goes back to the simple mantra Caldwell has preached all season when it comes to injuries and facing adversity in this league - Next man up. Part of that equation applies to Detroit s kicking game, which saw the release of K Alex Henery after key misses against the Bills. Injuries and setbacks are just a part of the game that every team suffers through at some point in the season, and Caldwell knows it is the good teams that find the right players to step up and continue to perform in any situation. Caldwell on players stepping up and performing: One of the things that I ll continue to say and that goes for me or anyone else that plays this game, in this league, it s a performance-based league, plain and simple and you have to perform. Anyone that doesn t, we take a look and see if we can improve that one way or another. When WR Calvin Johnson left the game early in the third quarter against the Bills, fellow WR Golden Tate knew it was his time to step up and become an even bigger spark for the offense, as Detroit knew it could not afford to lose Johnson s production. After losing the four-time Pro Bowler midway through the game, Tate caught four of his seven receptions and 82 of his 134 receiving yards on the afternoon, including a 55-yarder to set the Lions up with a chance to take the lead late in the game. Tate on if it was difficult playing the rest of the game without Johnson and Bush vs. Buffalo: Yeah it is tough, but I think we have enough play-makers like myself, (Eric) Ebron, even (George) Winn showed out. Our rookie came in and had some big plays for us. Ryan Broyles, I think we have play-makers. I think we have a great game plan going into each game. BACKING UP THE DEFENSE On defense, with all the attention that the Lions front four has received, the emergence of the linebacker corps has contributed greatly to Detroit s No. 1 ranking in total defense. With veteran LB Stephen Tulloch out for the remainder of the season, Detroit has had to count on DeAndre Levy and Tahir Whitehead to step in and fill that void. Even though Tulloch s leadership cannot be replaced, the strong play of Levy, Whitehead and Ashlee Palmer is what s helping the Lions as they continue to be among the League s best. Lions Defensive Coordinator Teryl Austin on what he has seen in Whitehead: What we saw early was he s sudden, he can strike people, and he can run people down. He gives you a little bit of a pass rush because he is so fast. We saw that early in OTA s and it just a matter like a lot of young guys having an opportunity to do it. While Whitehead is manning the middle of the field, Levy has continued to terrorize teams on the outside. With 13 total tackles in Week 5 vs. Buffalo, Levy recorded his thirdconsecutive game with 10-plus tackles and was also named NFC Defensive Player of the Month for September. Levy s play has been tremendous dating back to last season, as he is on pace to have another 100-plus-tackle year. Caldwell on what has impressed him about Levy: I think it s because he s instinctive and that he has a real good knack for finding the ball, but he does it in an unassuming way. You ll look up and he ll have eight, seven or nine tackles and obviously I think everybody has noticed his ability to catch the ball and make plays on the ball. Palmer s contributions were well-documented in the defense s stout performance against the Bills last week as he picked up his second-career sack. Palmer became the ninth different Lions player to tally a sack this season, as the team is tied for sixth in the NFL in sacks with 12. 2014 NOTABLE PLAYER MILESTONES WR CALVIN JOHNSON ¾ By recording 77 catches in 2014, Johnson (594) will surpass WR Herman Moore (670) for the most career receptions in Lions history.
