Sports Information Office 1500 University Drive Billings, MT 59101 Office: (406) 657-2100 Fax: (406) 657-2919 Yellowjacket Basketball 2003-2004 Weekly Release #13 February 9, 2004 This Week s Schedule: Tuesday, Feb. 10 BYU-Hawaii (Alterowitz Gym, 7 p.m.) Thursday, Feb. 12 BYU-Hawaii (Alterowitz Gym, 7 p.m.) Saturday, Feb. 14 Hawaii Pacific (Alterowitz Gym, 8 p.m.) This Week s Opponent: Brigham Young University-Hawaii Seasiders The Seasiders are the team to beat in the PacWest Conference as they bring a 7-1 conference mark to Billings this week. Ranked fifteenth in the nation and second in the West Region, BYU-Hawaii is 17-3 overall with only one loss to a Division II school. That loss came last week when the Seasiders were upended at Hawaii-Hilo, ending their 15-game winning streak, which was the second longest in the nation at the time. The Seasiders are talented, but not deep. They have four players averaging over 11 points a game, but only one player outside of the starting five averages over ten minutes a game. Jake Chrisman leads the team in scoring at 20.8 ppg, followed by Shawn Opunui at 18.4 ppg, Michael Stowell at 13.3 ppg, and Austin Smylie at 11.7 ppg. Chrisman and Smylie might be the best combination of big men in the league. Each shoots over 55 percent from the field, and Smylie leads the PacWest with a 59.6 percent field goal percentage. Opunui provides the outside scoring threat with 60 made 3-pointers this year. He leads the nation in 3-point percentage at 56.1 percent. The first meeting this year between the Yellowjackets and Seasiders in Laie, HI went down to the wire. Chrisman scored with six seconds left to give BYUH a 91-90 win. Hawaii Pacific University Sea Warriors The Sea Warriors have been up and down, losing the first seven games of the season before having some strong showings once conference play started. HPU is 4-5 in the PacWest and 7-13 overall entering the week. They will play two games at Western New Mexico before coming to Billings on Saturday. The Yellowjackets split two games with the Sea Warriors in Honolulu at the beginning of January. MSUB lost 107-92 in the first game as HPU drained 19 three-pointers and shot an amazing 70 percent from behind the arc. The Jackets rebounded for an 89-86 win in the second game. HPU relies primarily on two players, Aaron Abrams and Marvin Noble. Abrams is second in the PacWest for scoring at 22.2 ppg, and Noble averages 17.5 ppg. Six of the seven scored in double figures, led by Cameron Munoz s 33. Munoz scored all of his points, including eight 3-pointers, in the second half. A case of the flu slowed him in the first half, but he bounced back making 11 of 15 field goal attempts in the final 20 minutes. Jerett Skrifvars finished the game with a triple-double, scoring 24 points, pulling down 13 rebounds and grabbing 11 steals. He achieved career highs for both rebounds and steals, setting a new school record for the latter. The Yellowjackets set a school team record with 28 steals. Dave Carse and Jonathan Wiley each set career highs with five steals apiece. Carse and Bill Day each had double-doubles. Carse scored 26 points and handed out a career-high 15 assists, one short of the school record. Day added 17 points and a career high 13 rebounds. West Region Men s Basketball Poll (2/4/04) 1. Winnett, MT/Winnett HS 2003-2004 Yellowjacket Coaches Craig Carse (9 th year): Carse is in his ninth season on the Yellowjacket bench and has firmly established MSU- Billings as one of the top offensive teams in the nation. Last year the Yellowjackets finished the year second in NCAA Division II for both scoring (89.3 ppg) and 3-point shooting (10.7 3-pointers per game). In the last eight seasons, MSU-Billings has been ranked in at least the top three in each category, including seven NCAA Division II scoring titles and four 3-point shooting titles. Over Carse s tenure at MSUB, the Yellowjackets have averaged 96.5 points and 11.7 3-pointers per game and have qualified for four NCAA Tournaments. Before arriving at MSU- Billings, Carse was an assistant under Dale Brown at Louisiana State University. Before going to LSU, Carse guided West Virginia State to the NAIA National Championship game in 1984, giving him appearances in national tournaments at the Division I, Division II and NAIA levels. Mark Hamilton (1 st year): Hamilton joins the Yellowjacket staff after replacing longtime assistant Brent Montague. A Columbus, Montana native, Hamilton played at MSU-Billings from 1994-1998, helping the Yellowjackets win two Pacific West Conference championships and earn three NCAA Tournament berths. He was the captain of the 1998 team that captured the PacWest title. Hamilton played in 110 games as a Yellowjacket, scoring 1,463 points and making 286 three-pointers. He s still No. 7 on MSUB s all-time scoring list and No. 2 for three-pointers made in a career. Hamilton is also in the Yellowjacket career record book for points per game (10 th at 17.9), field goals made (6 th with 496), and three-point percentage (4 th at 42.56).
