2017 - MISGA PAST PRESIDENTS (ABCD) CHAMPIONSHIP TOURNAMENT On Thursday, August 10, prodigious Norbeck Country Club, located in Rockville, MD hosted the 2017 MISGA Past Presidents (ABCD) Championship Tournament. 99 greybeard golfers representing 27 of MISGA s 48 clubs registered to participate. However, only 95 hit the carriageways of Maryland, Delaware and Pennsylvania with high expectations of becoming MISGA s 2017 MISGA individual Gross and Net Grand Champion. Perkūnas, the Baltic weather god, looked favorably upon the gathering of veteran linksters. He Norbeck Country Club provided suitable summer weather playing conditions - warm temperature, but not humid, partially clouded skies with barely a breeze. Norbeck s well manicured tee boxes, fairways, greens and mildly troublesome roughs were in superb playing condition. From the senior gold tees, the par 72 course measured 5,790 yards with a course rating of 68.1 and a slope of 124. Playing time ranged from first in at 4 hours, 30 minutes to last in at 5 hours, 12 minutes. THE PAST PRESIDENTS The PP-ABCD tournament was established in 1991 to recognize and honor MISGA s past presidents. These gentlemen devoted much of their time and effort to promote the mission and objectives of our seniors golfing organization. This year, only two of MISGA s presidents were able to attend and participate in this event. L-R: Jim Wilcox (current MISGA President) and Tom Taylor (2011). C.J. Myers (1997) and Dr. Tom Tarpley (2006) had registered to participate, but, because of unforeseen circumstances, they were unable to attend. They were missed. 1

GROSS GRAND CHAMPION After all the scorecards had been collected, tabulated, attested and posted, two golden-aged golfers had tied for the Gross Grand Champion crown by shooting a fiery 72. Thus, Jeff Allen (Wild Quail - Div. I) and Craig Ostrom (Hobbit s Glen - Div. IV) climbed into a golf cart and proceeded to hole #1 for a suddendeath playoff. On the fourth hole, Allen sank a par putt to capture the coveted title, the crystal vase trophy and a $100 gift certificate. Allen L-R: Mike Barillo (NCC Head Pro),, Jeff Allen (GGC),(GGC) Blake Doty (NCC Asst. Pro) successfully defended his 2016 GGC title.. that he won in another sudden-death playoff. NET GRAND CHAMPION On the Net side of the tournament, highly talented Jeff Gasiorowski (Fairway Hills - Div. VI) shot a flaming 58 for a seven stroke margin of victory over Gary Manion (Norbeck - Div. IV) and Joe Emert (Bowie - Div. VI). For his golfing deftness, Gasiorowski captured the Net Grand Champion title, the crystal vase trophy and a $100 gift certificate. Gasiorowski s score of 58 set the all-time low net record for the PP-ABCD MCT. L-R: Lloyd Stimson (MISGA Tournament Chairman),, Blake Doty (NCC Asst. Pro),, Jeff Gasiorowski (NGC),, Mike Barillo (NCC Head Pro),, Jake Jacobi (Tournament Coordinator) 2

For the seventh time in the last six years, Norbeck Country Club has hosted one of the MISGA Championship Tournaments (2-Man Team & Past Presidents {ABCD}). Many thanks and applause must go to the entire staff at Norbeck Country Club. Their hard work and dedication provided MISGA with another amazing tournament. MISGA thanks GM LaMott Smith for permitting Norbeck to host another of MISGA s annual championship tournaments. Much praise and a multitude of thanks must go to Norbeck s highly committed and apt Head Pro, Mike Barillo (R), his very competent Asst. Pro Blake Doty (L) and Norbeck s entire Pro Shop staff. They ensured the success of all golf related activities. Once again, special thanks and accolades must go to Norbeck s Course Supervisor Jay Nalls and his exceptional course management staff. Even with the high heat, humidity and above normal amount of rain during July and August, the course was in pristine playing condition. From the 1st tee box to the 18th green, the entire course was a joy to play. STAFF - NORBECK COUNTRY CLUB Many thanks and kudos to Catering Director Charlotte Kates, Executive Chef Ziggy Gomez and Food & Beverage and Facilities Manager Estuardo Garcia and the entire dining and bar staffs. They performed in an exemplary manner. They provided a 5-star pregolf BBQ luncheon (hotdogs, hamburgers & chicken) with all the accompaniments. The post-golf cocktail hour with its cash-bar beverages and tasty hors d oeuvres allowed the players a chance to wind down and relax before dinner. As for the awards banquet, the venerable finalists were feted to a double entrée feast (filet & crab cake) with equally tasty sides and beverages. The finale included key lime pie with chocolate chip cookies. All were a connoisseur s delight. MISGA TEAM - NORBECK COUNTRY CLUB The success of this year s Past Presidents (ABCD) tournament could not have been accomplished without the attentiveness, efforts, and management skills of Tournament Coordinator and Norbeck s MISGA Club Rep Jake Jacobi. He was everywhere doing everything. His performance was no less than outstanding. 3

Special recognition, thanks and accolades must go to Gary Manion and the many MISGA and NCC members who so graciously volunteered their time to assist with player registration, the 50/50 pool and as highly appreciated ball spotters. Lloyd Stimson NOTE: Scroll down for a complete list of the 2017 PP-ABCD winners (pages 5-7).
