PRESIDENT'S MESSAGE Jerry Kyle July 2011 Hello from Canada. At this writing I am on my way to Fairbanks, Alaska, to a cabin on the Chena River with no computers. By the time you read it I will be there. I hope you all are having a good time. You know I am. I may or may not be back by July 31st but, will try as I know Steve Walker will make a nice presentation on "How To Build A Perfect Pond." OK, I know there is no such thing as a perfect pond since technological advances and new knowledge may make whatever we do out of date by next year. However, there are basic things we can learn to build or to tweak our pond systems and Steve Walker is justifiably July 2011 Page 1 proud of what he has produced as part of the Advantage Pond System products. Come and learn something and bring a friend as the "Bring a Friend Contest" is still going on. As an added attraction, we will also see a Power Point Presentation on recognizing pathogens we see under the microscope to enable us to be better Koi care givers by recognizing problems to best determine treatments. This meeting is going to be a very interesting one and there will be some nice Koi to see. Hope to see you all there. June s Meeting at Gus & Leslie's Inside this Issue Pres. NEXT MEETING IS This month the Camellia Koi Club has accepted an invitation from Steve Walker of Sacramento Koi to see a presentation on "How To Build A Perfect Pond." Additionally, Steve will show us how to recognize pathogens found under the microscope. This will greatly help members of the club to be better care givers. July 31 st at 1:00 p.m. Sacramento Koi 4670 Pacific Street Suite 200 Rocklin, CA 95677 Once again there will be a reward for the club member bringing the most guests as the club continues its quest to gain new members and recognition in the community. BJ asked if people could let her know if they're planning on attending so she'd have sufficient food & drink. Her email is bj@sacramentokoi.com.

Garry s Did You Know? by Garry Chin Page 4 So over the past couple of months I have discussed subjects related to the care of your Koi and Koi Pond (Koi Pond Maintenance, What to feed you Koi during various temperatures, Being in tuned with your Koi and Koi Pond). So how about something fun with your Koi? Did you know that you can teach you Koi to eat from your hand or play with a ball? One of the nice things about Koi keeping is being able to hand feed your pet provided you do not have predatory animals to be concerned with. Training your Koi to take food from your hand takes time and patience. You should feed your Koi from the same location every time you feed them. This location should not be the same as the netting or catching location. To begin with, you need to get your Koi accustomed to your hand being in the water. Start by removing all jewelry and washing your hand. Rinse your hand well to remove any soap residue. Place your hand into the pond, in the beginning the Koi will shy away from your hand. Eventually your Koi will become accustomed to your hand being in the pond. Your Koi may then nudge your hand and even nibble on your hand or fingers..caution no sudden moves as you will spook your Koi! After the Koi become accustomed to your hand being in the pond, distribute Koi food on the surface while keeping one hand submerged in the pond. Soon your Koi associate your hand with Koi food. The next step is to place Koi food only in your hand and having your Koi eat the food from your hand. Do not despair as this may take a few day to accomplish. Soon your Koi will be feeding from your hand and yet another joy of Koi keeping is yours. This will lead to your Koi allowing you to pet them and even cradle them. Did you know that Koi are a playful lot? Place a kid s plastic ball in the Koi pond and they will eventually discover it and nudge it around with their head. They even seem to nudge the ball to one another. After a period of time the plastic ball is removed for another day. If you have a Koi related question or want to discuss a Koi related topic and you do not see me at a club meeting or activity, the best way to contact me is via e-mail at scvkoi@yahoo.com.
