CELEBRATING 18 YEARS OF SINGLES GOLF IN AMERICA Shenandoah Chapter - American Singles Golf Association May 2011 From the President It s been a pretty good start for our chapter so far. The weather has not been perfect, but the golf has been fun. With our Happy Hours out numbering our golf outings, one might think we are a golf group with a social problem instead of a social group with a golf problem. Marie and Sharon have come up with some great ideas for Happy Hours. We have met a few new guests who we are trying to recruit at all of these social outings. I m looking forward to a very good month of May to increase membership and get more golfers on the links. At the Beach Blast presented by the Wilmington Chapter our very own Christine Betterton finished on the 2 nd place team during Saturday s events. Way to go Christine. Our chapter is already becoming known as winners. Last November our very own president and his team had a 2 nd place finish at the Battle of the Beach in Myrtle Beach. Pinehurst is this month and we have a great group of members going to represent us. This will be the first time for just about all of them at a National event. I am hoping to hear we have more hardware for our chapter. Good luck to all who are attending. ~Paul Gorodnick From the Social Chair Red Rocks in Centreville was a great start to the bar hopping the evening would soon promote. We had a great turnout of members and our newest soon to be member Rich showed up after a round of golf. Ann Connors and Myra Perscky also came out to enjoy the food and cocktails. Thanks again to Myra for buying some appetizers for the group. It should be known that Myra is leaning heavy on joining our chapter as well. She will be retiring soon and she is excited about starting to play golf. She did mention her son was a 2 handicap. Maybe he can show us all a few pointers. After Red Rocks, the group split up to Bars a little closer to home. Some went to Velocity5 and others went to South Riding Inn. Giuseppe s in Haymarket turns out to be quite the quaint little place for great food, live entertainment and a great place to meet the locals. 8 of our finest members and guests met at G s around 7:30pm. Ryder & Zani were the featured duo for the music and the rest of our group provided the entertainment. Our newest member Ann, had happy feet all evening and got half the lounge up on the dance floor, whether they wanted to or not. This evening s guest list included Ruth and Sam, plus new members Diane & Ann. Amber greeted everyone with a chocolate martini or two. Paul, Ann, Marie and Sharon were dancing and I think entertained the band as much as the band played for them. The rain did not dampen anyone s spirits. Looking forward to following Ryder & Zani again soon. ~Marie Yancey From the Secretary Our monthly meeting was another great success with another new member joining in on all the fun. For those of you who have not met Rich DeMasi, you will want to next chapter outing. He is going to fit in very well with our group. Not to mention he has a couple of condos in Myrtle Beach. Other than the monthly meeting and talk of Pinehurst, everything went well. Those attending settled into the couches provided by Velocity5 for our meetings and we watched the Capitals win game 1. Upcoming Events Include (see SinglesGolf.com/events) Memorial Day Weekend Reunion - See attached flyer. Office hours are 9-2, ET. From the Golf Chair April 9, 2011 Bull Run Golf Club 6 ASGA Members plus 1 guest, took on Mother Nature once again. This time it was just a little bit wet and a tad chilly. The wind was down to single digits and everyone was comfortably dressed for the round ahead of us. After hitting a few range balls and some practice time on the putting and chipping greens, we were off. John McMullen led the charge as he and Tom Dobrydney joined Brenda Rossi and Deb Gray on the first tee. Newest member Steve Raymond, our president, Paul Gorodnick both welcomed our guest Deborah Predzin Tom, Deb, Brenda, Steve, John & Paul in the second group. Some great shots and not so great shots were had by all. Was the first time playing Bull Run for some of our members, as seen were John and Brenda what looked like were stuck in the mud on a cart path less traveled. April 23, 2011 Blue Ridge Shadows Golf Club 6 happy golfers came out to enjoy this fabulous golf course in the Shenandoah Valley. With the rain coming down as the group headed down I-66, Paul our driver had faith and kept convincing the women it would be nice and warm once we started. It was still raining a little once we pulled into the parking lot. As we checked in, the rain stopped and blue skies were seen in Getting warmed up on the driving range. the distant. Deb, Brenda & Paul led the way followed by Terry, Sharon & Gail. Everyone was good and loose for the round and layers of clothes slowly came off as the sun began to shine. Lots of great shots were had by all, Brenda hitting a great shot on the par 3, 3 rd hole to within 11. She missed the birdie but knocked in the par. Deb was showing off her new putter making a 20 footer followed by another 30 footer on the next hole. The 12 th hole became quite a circus for anyone watching. Paul knocked 3 shots into the water followed by Deb knocking in two of her own. Brenda just quietly made par. The course was putting out Easter eggs for the golfers with prizes in them. Looking back on Hole #12 you could see Gail running to each tee box grabbing all the eggs. Turns out to be a good thing for Sharon, because she won a free membership to Blue Ridge Shadows. Terry and Gail won prizes also. The 19 th hole found us watching the Caps clinch the first round of the playoffs. Afterwards, we headed over to Houlihans for dinner and recap the round as well as our childhood memories of the area. Remember playing outside and loving it? Terry, Sharon, Paul, Gail, Deb & Brenda. Blue Ridge Shadows

Saturday Golf Bi-Events Weekly These events are subject to the first 20 members who sign up in advance. If you are bringing a friend please let us know at the time of your rsvp so they can be added to the playing roster. As our chapter grows, so will the number of golfers we get tee times to play. Our Chapter Golf Payment Policy All payments for Saturday golf outings are to be sent to Deb Gray our chapter treasurer. Payment locks in your RSVP for any golf event. This also goes for any guest you bring to a chapter outing. We set up a contract with the course for x number of players. Payment in advance assures our chapter that you are committed to be there. Special circumstances do come up and will be handled accordingly. Wednesday before the golf outing is the deadline for all payments of that weeks event. The chapter will then pay the course with one payment. Any guest who plays in our events will be charged $10 extra. Being a member of the chapter is a perk for cheaper greens fee. Please see our chapters Cancellation Policy. May Golf Outings We have changed the Range Night site to Twin Lakes. This seems to be a better location for the majority of our membership. Looking forward to seeing more of our membership on the range. Nearby is a short par 3 course that we may opt to play on other nights. Stay tuned for more details. If a member incurs an obligation, then they must pay ASGA-Shenandoah the money they owe before they are eligible to participate in another event. ~Amber Yost From the Communications Chair We are still trying to fill this position. If interested please contact Paul as soon as possible. From the Treasurer All golf outings and any other chapter related events that involve advance payment should be sent to Deb Gray. We are now setup to take PayPal. There is a $2 fee for using this service. You can still chose to mail in your payments or pay Deb, Paul, Amber or Marie in person. debjgray@msn.com. ~Deb Gray From the Membership Our chapter picked up 2 new members in April and getting closer to our first half goal of 25 members. The monthly meeting had Rich DeMasi, (guest) walk in and join us. Our ladies made a great impression, because two days later he was golfing with Sharon and Gail and attended our Friday night happy hour. Glenn Payne from Front Royal also joined our chapter. Ann Connors rounded out the month joining us also. If everyone could bring one guest to our next meeting in May, this would definitely push us over the 25 member mark. Let s talk up ASGA with our single friends. Deb Gray was our latest monthly meeting winner. Future Multi Chapter Golf Outings Memorial Weekend at Pinehurst May 26-29, 2011 Looks like our chapter will be well represented. All efforts have been made to get everyone on the same floor and same proximity to each member s room. Chatter of possibly having a little party in one of the rooms for our members and other members that we meet during Pinehurst is looking almost certain to happen. The World Golf Village August 26-28, 2011 Jacksonville Chapter is sponsoring a Multi-Chapter event at the World Golf Village in August. Three Days, Two Nights with both rounds right at the village. See more details on the ASGA website or check with Paul. As always, car pooling is highly recommended. You can fly right into Jacksonville and rent a car if you like. The Last Word I just wanted to pass along a little note to our members. Some of you might have known Vince Vigliotti, he passed away the last week of April. He was a former ASGA-DC president and a friend of mine that I met through ASGA. He will be missed. My prayers go out to Francine and his family. (Pictured, Paul, Pat, Dave & Vinny). Do you want to update your personal information on our chapter s roster? You can now do this yourself. Simply click on the MY ACCOUNT link at the national website (SinglesGolf.com). You can update your address, phone, add your cell phone, change handicap, etc. Doing it yourself takes the burden off of your chapter leaders so they can spend more time on the golf course and less time on the computer!

CELEBRATING 18 YEARS OF SINGLESGOLF IN AMERICA AMERICAN SINGLES GOLF ASSOCIATION MAY, 2011 Event Dates: Thursday, May 26 Sunday, May 29, 2011 With great excitement and anticipation, we re happy to announce our continued association with the fine folks at Pinehurst Resort in announcing our Reunion in Pinehurst. It s a great time to see old friends and meet friends you never thought you had. Dates set for this year are May 26-29, a Thursday through Saturday (we polled you and that s what you wanted!). Our packages start at $515 per person, based on double occupancy and $674 per person based on single occupancy, which includes all taxes, resort service fees, gratuities for wait and bell staff, etc. Also, ASGA will rebate to your chapter $20.00 per attendee if your chapter sends 10% or more of your membership (as of 5/26/11) to this event. See SinglesGolf.com/Pinehurst for details on this coupon. Room-by-Yourself packages and non-golf packages are also available. Non-hotel packages are available only to our Pinehurst chapter members. Make Sure You re a Member Before Traveling! It really should never have to be said, but sometimes we have to remind folks. In order to attend ANY multi-chapter event, you must be a member of ASGA. Multi-chapter events are special events and it s very important that you are a member before showing-up. Who wants the embarrassment of being told to join on the spot or else? Also, we occasionally need to remind folks that our official national policy on guests is that you can attend one (1) event as a guest, either a meeting or a golf outing, but to attend any other event, you must be a member of ASGA. We ve had comments from members asking why should I renew my dues if others don t have to pay? ASGA has four (4) employees and dues income is our primary source of revenue. No revenue - no organization. Thanks for helping to spread the word about the importance of dues. To join or renew, go to www.singlesgolf.com/join Imagine Yourself in Ireland in 2012 - - We re looking at bringing a group to Ireland in the Summer of 2012. Have you been there? If you re interested, go to our website and put your name on the list with the other 100 people. Just go to our homepage (SinglesGolf.com) and click on the photo of Old Head Golf Course in Ireland. - - Tom Alsop President / Founder GolfASGA@aol.com
