South Coast Pirates Newsletter - January 2017 COAST DIVISION CHAMPIONS 2015/2016 The new season is already nearly two thirds over and the Pirates are sitting 4 th in the league. This is remarkable achievement for such a young team young in terms of the club (4 years old) and the players (8 of the first team are 20 or younger). We have 4 wins (one a walkover), 2 draws and 2 defeats. There was a holiday break for a few weeks over the Christmas period which has interrupted our training schedule somewhat. In December we had mixed results beating Mombasa 16:12 but then losing to league leaders Catholic University (Monks) 3:26. The Mombasa game was very exciting with end to end play but Pirates held out the clinch the win during a very tough 10 minutes of added time after the 80 minutes. The Monks game was a let-down as we seemed demoralised after conceding an early try and never really got into the game. The lads have discussed this reverse and have learned from the loss. January has been very good with a stunning 32:3 away win over Jomo Kenyatta University (JKUAT) in Juja and a very impressive 20:11 win away to Mombasa. The icing on the cake is that 5 of the 7 January tries were scored by the young players who represent the future of the club. The try of the season so far was scored by Marko Amani (pictured right) against Mombasa, he picked the ball on our 25 metre line when being surrounded by opposing players, jinxed around those then ran the whole length of the pitch to place the ball cleanly under the posts, he must have skipped around another 5 or 6 tackles. Brilliant individual effort. His twin brother Luka (picture left) scored a good try against JKUAT the previous Saturday. Our U19 player Charlie Tendwa scored twice in two games and Edwin Ojiambo(nicknamed Monster) also scored his first try for the club against JKUAT. Pirates were awarded a walk over against Thika RFC, this gives us 5 points and a 24:0 points win. We had asked for the game to be rescheduled as its best to play to get the points but regretfully this was not possible. We now enter the final part of the season which will be 5 games against teams from the Western Conference. These games may prove to be tougher than the ones in the Eastern Conference as these teams are very well established and have good financial backing. We ll get some cracking good games though and yet more experience, both on the field and off as the games will entail a minimum of 4 days travel. Or next away game is to play Kisii who are currently top of the Championship, a tough game will follow a gruelling bus ride (850 km one way).

A WORD FROM THE CHAIRMAN It is some time since the last newsletter owing to a break in the season, longer than should have been owing to 2 postponed games that would have been played at home. The last game played at home we lost to Monks by the large margin of 26-3 was a great disappointment for us all. What went wrong we are not too sure, these game happen even to the better sides, let us hope that we have put it behind us as we look to the future. Since then we have travelled and had two very good away wins. We have to try and fulfill all our games, some are a very long distances away and on Saturday 11 th February we travel to Kisii. This places a big strain on our finances. Last Saturday we again beat Mombasa proving our Coast Championship status, the score being 20-11. It is nice to see that Mombasa are now back at their old ground at the Mombasa Sports Club where they have been playing previously for many years. Our team is shaping up well and attitude is changing for the better, we are now getting comradeship, team spirit with a lot of enthusiasm which showed up strongly during the first 20 minutes of play in Mombasa when a much heavier pack were camped on our line with repeated attacks only to be repelled by a very good and organized defense. Training is going very well with good attendance, but we still have to try and bulk up our players if we are going to cope with the better Nairobi and Western sides. The side is very well supported by some very talented school boys who have come through the SCP Academy training program which is proof that it is working well, it is without a doubt our future for a thriving club. The new ground is standing up well and gives our players more confidence knowing that they are not going to land on a lump of coral after a tackle. Our basic gym and homemade equipment seems to be working, It is being well used. We are not having the big attendances at games that we had at the show ground so we must try and popularise this much more with the local communities. We have a game against Eldoret University this Saturday and let us have a full house to support our lads, they are doing very well, encourage them to aim for the best win possible. Before I close this I want to say a great big thanks to the Directors and all staff at Base Titanium who have committed themselves to back SCP for a further two years, this will help us improve our Academy training in the schools and to help keep the club active for the benefit of the whole community. Many thanks must also go to St Joseph Catholic School for hosting us with much cooperation, I hope we all will benefit from this union. Please if anyone has any ideas on how to raise more finance in the way of sponsorship or donations please inform one of the committee, we need more backing to take us where we want to be, not just the best club at the coast!!! 1

FROM THE COACH What a great season is panning out to be. The boys are working harder and we have a great pool of players who are sacrificing a lot. With an average age of 20 years, so much potential is being unearthed. So far in the season, we stand 4th in the league accumulated 22 points through 4 wins, 2 draws and 2 loses. It has been an upward trend since the first game and the belief is growing. We managed to get our first ever win away from the coast, so the jinx is cut. However we don't to get ahead of ourselves to start thinking about the play offs. We are just approaching it a game at a time. We are also looking at helping some of the boys who just finished school have something meaningful to do. There are boys in need of fees to complete/continue with school. It's great to be able to ensure we take care of these boys in and off the field, so as to help them concentrate on building their lives through the game. They are working hard for the club. The Confederation of Africa Rugby U19 has been changed to U20. This means Charles Tendwa is an automatic qualifier. We have 6 boys who fit the bill for the trails, and hope more will be absorbed in the setup. I wish to extend my sincere gratitude to the committee and all our supporters both local and international. God bless you abundantly. We promise to keep working harder and help the boys play better rugby and also grow into great men of society. FROM THE TEAM MANAGER We didn't start the new league well with a loss and a draw but now the team is doing very well, and not just in winning matches. Our discipline is getting better every day and a lot of hard work is being put into training. We have balanced squad for this league combining senior players with more experience and young talented players. We are aiming to finish in the top four. This month we have played two away matches both and managed to win both of them (JKUAT 3 Pirates 32, Mombasa 11 Pirates 20) and as Coach mentioned we achieved our first ever away win out of the coast region. I believe these two victories, good support from committee, well planned training session and adequate funding will motivate our lads to enable them win more matches. We will be re-starting our Pirates Academy Coaching Program in February and have asked our players to train to become coaches for the schools. At least one of the following qualifications are required plus a minimum of D+ from high school: Level one coach Rugby ready First aider Level one referee This will ensure our program grows and attains higher standards. FROM THE TREASURER As mentioned before our finances for this coming season will be much higher than last By careful use of our resources during 2016 we managed to fulfil all our fixtures and other financial obligations. We ended the year with about Kes 12,000 in the bank. In January a very welcome cash injection was received from Base Titanium as part of their previous commitment to both develop the pitch at St Josephs, to focus on youth development and support for the first team. Additional funding has also been agreed which is a lifeline for the club. Money was also received from the Kwale County Government to fund an away game in Nairobi. To reduce costs the team now returns to Ukunda after an away game in the Nairobi area thus saving an overnight stay and we don t take a medic now. This save us around Kes 25,000 for the Nairobi games. For the games in Western Kenya we are considering not staying overnight en-route but having a break in Nairobi for dinner then continuing onwards. This will be very tiring for the lads but they will have one day to recover before the game. We need a balance between financial care and physical effect on the players. Proposals are still be sent out for funding to local establishments and one is being developed for the national corporates. A fund raising dinner is to be held at The Cave on March 18 th. The chef will be Paul Van De Beveren who is well known in Diani and is a Michellin One Star chef. The menu is being planned but the cost will be maximum Kes 7,000 of which at least Kes 2,000 will go to the Pirates travel fund. More details will be sent out later. I hope we ll get a full house for what should be a wonderful evening with some good items to be auctioned 3

Lastly Two of our supporters have decided to sell their 3 bedroomed villa in Galu, approximately 10 minutes walk from the beach and close to three good beach side restaurants. They are relocating to America. It s a big house (320 sq metres) with swimming pool and can sleep up to 8 people. The price is Kes 19,900,000 and comes fully furnished with a modern kitchen (imported two-oven cooker and extra-large fridge), TV and DVD player. If anyone is interested please contact anyone at the Pirates for a detailed specification (committee member or player). A successful sale will result in a big donation to the Pirates Rugby Club as well as to another well-known local cause. Many of our players are looking for work, either full time or casual. If anyone needs a driver, night guard, gardener, cleaner etc please contact anyone on the committee. We are also looking for a tutor to help some of the younger players pass their final exams in October for their KCSE. Education is the future. THANKS TO EVERYONE FOR SUPPORTING YOUR LOCAL TEAM!
