Major Stock Show Season Is Here The Extension Office would like to wish the best of luck to all of the Calhoun County youth who will be participating in the Major Show for the next couple of months. Calhoun County has youth exhibiting Market Steers, Market Barrows, Heifers and Scramble Heifers. In addition, we have several members competing in Livestock Judging Contests, Food Challenge / Food Show and Public Speaking. Good Luck! Page 4 Council and PALA Meeting The County 4-H Council and Parent Adult Leaders Association will meet on Monday, February 29th at 5:30pm at the Extension Office. The Council will be stuffing Easter eggs for the upcoming Easter egg hunt on March 19th. The Council will be hosting a 4-H 5K Color Run/Walk on March 19th. Page 5 Community Service All Around 4-H Club made Octopus stuff toys for the hospital as a community service project. The Mariner s 4-H club also made the Octopus stuff toys during their meeting in January. Thank you for all of your help. 4-H 5K Color Run/Walk & Easter Egg Hunt 4-H Council will be hosting their first fundraiser with a 5K Color Run/Walk on March 19th @ 9 am at the Little Chocolate Bayou Park. Come out and show your support. Immediately following the run there will be an Easter Egg Hunt for any child of Calhoun County whether a 4-H member or not. All is welcomed!!!!!
Page 6 Clothing and Textiles The Clothing and Textiles group met on January 17th and made toiletry bags for the patients at the Port Lavaca Rehabilitation and Nursing Home as well as fleece scarves and hats. The next Clothing and Textiles meeting is scheduled for February 15th. Page 9 CALHOUN COUNTY 4H Round Up There is more to 4H than you may think. 4H round up is a great way to experience even more of what 4H has to offer. Educational Presentations Entered as individual or team up to 5. 4Hers give a 12 minute presentation on Beef, Clothing & Textiles, Companion Animals, Health, Horse, Open, Open - Ag, Open - FCS, Promote 4H, Safety & Injury Prevention, or sheep goat. Public Speaking - Individuals present a 5 to 7 minute speech on their choice of subjects. Beef Quiz Bowl - teams of 3 to 4 answer questions about the beef cattle industry Share the fun - 4H members can show off their creative talents in a variety of contests. Including: Poetry/Prose Vocal Musical -Instrumental Solo/Band - Performance Choreographed - Routines Celebrate 4-H Dramedy For more information contact the extension office
Page 7 Walk Across Texas Walk Across Texas! will kick off in Calhoun County on February 15th. Walk Across Texas! is a free 8-week program that focuses on increasing physical activity as you work with a team of 8 people to walk 830 miles across Texas. Team members can choose to walk, bike, run, or participate in healthy physical activities to improve their health during the 8-week series. For more information contact the Calhoun County Extension Office at 361-552-9747. Come on clubs lets have a competition to see which club can walk the 830 miles.
