2013 Poteet Strawberry Festival Taste of Texas Food Show Date: April 15, 2013 Place: Rotary Club Pavilion (Poteet Strawberry Festival Grounds) Times: 8:30 11:00 A.M. Check in food 11:00-12:00PM Judging 1:00 PM Auction FOOD SHOW CLASSES: (The Whole Recipe is required for all entries) A. All Cakes E. Pies B. Cheesecakes F. Miscellaneous C. All Cookies & Candies J. Jam & Jelly D. Yeast Breads & Quick Breads S. Salsa GENERAL RULES 1. Type recipe on an 8 ½ x 11 sheet of paper or submit online. 2. Write name, address, phone number and age on back of recipe. Recipes will be used in judging food items. 3. When signing in at registration table, use full name, mailing address and phone number. 4. Food entries must be the COMPLETE recipe displayed for judging. 5. Recipes for all entries will be required. NO RECIPE, NO ENTRY! 6. All recipes AND entries will become property of the Taste of Texas Food Show. 7. Non-placing entries will be sold by the food show committee to raise funds for scholarships. 8. The food item should be placed on a disposable plate and covered with plastic wrap for appearance and cleanliness. 9. No refrigeration is available. 10. Food items will be identified by number assigned by the Food Show Committee during registration. 11. No commercial food or products will be accepted. 12. No entry fee is required. However, you will be required to pay gate admission to participate. 13. Only one entry will be accepted in each class per contestant. 14. Food must be prepared by the exhibitor and must be homemade. Mixes CANNOT be used. 15. You must return to the food show area BEFORE 1P.M. to present your food at the auction. 16. A portion of the funds collected during the auction will be used for scholarships for qualifying students. 17. The Food Show Committee reserves the right to combine classes or to add new classes if necessary. 18. BEST OF SHOW will be open to all Jr. & Teen entries only. 19. BERRY BEST OF SHOW will be open to Jr. & Teen entries only and must have used at least 1 cup of strawberries as an ingredient or garnish. 20. Grand and Reserve Champion will be awarded in each age division. 21. Ribbons will be awarded through 4th place. Participation ribbons will be given to non-placing items in the Jr. & Teen divisions. Fashion Show News The Atascosa 4-H Fashion Show was held Thursday, March 7, 2013 at St. John Lutheran Church with great success. Eight 4-H members modeled their projects and presented them in front of judges. Five made their projects to compete in the construction category. Construction contestants where Junior- Casual 1st place Retta Roberts, Junior-Dressy 1st place Allyson Bautista, Intermediate-Casual 1st place Kendall Hagen, Intermediate-Specialty 1st place Rori Roberts, Senior-Casual 1st place Jaclyn Bonner. The buying category involved comparison shopping to pick the best outfit for the best price. Buying contestant Christian Cumpian places 1st in Intermediate- Casual. A new County Category was added this year for those that didn t want to make or buy an outfit. In the Junior Specialty 1st place Seth Robertson made a Soda Can Holder, Intermediate Specialty 1st place Luke Robertson made a Donkey Hand Puppet. This year, six of our 4-H members will have the opportunity to compete at District level on April 6, 2013. Thank you to all the family members that came out in support as they competed on Thursday afternoon. Good luck to everyone going onto District! Paper Clover Fundraiser The spring Paper Clover fundraiser is happening May 8 th -19 th in all Tractor Supply Company/Del s stores. There are several exciting features that have been added to this spring s promotion: TSC will be offering a $5 Paper Clover available for purchase in addition to the $1 option; a Purina coupon will be attached to each Paper Clover; a new incentive program for counties to receive additional funds; and a regional 4-H award winner, which will award $1,000 to the top performing state in each 4-H region Paper Clover Toolkit: The online Paper Clover toolkit is now available! You will find promotional resources like ads and web banners to help you spread the word in your community. You will also find information and planning resources to help answer any questions you may have such as an FAQ, tip sheet for in store activities, and planning calendar of all upcoming TSC events. N 4-H Ambassadors It s time to fill out applications for the Atascosa 4-H Ambassadors. Those interested must come to the extension office. Applications are due at or before 5:00pm on April 10, 2013. Rules: Must be a bona fide 4-H Member Interested 4-H Members will submit an Application for Team Membership form with a record book each year desiring to be considered. Current members are required to submit an application with a completed record book. Selection: 1) Applicants will meet all criteria for Gold Star and Silver Star as stated in the current 4-H Opportunities Handbook. 2) Applicants MUST go through the Ambassador Interview process. Horse Validations Reminder Families must validate horses in 4-H Connect by May 1 st to be eligible to show horses at District and State. TEXAS 4-H OUTDOOR CHALLENGE Do you love the great outdoors? Are you up for a fun, physical and mental challenge? If so, mark your calendars for June 29-30, 2013 for the 5th annual Texas 4-H Outdoor Challenge to be held at the Texas 4-H Conference Center in Brownwood. Grab a friend. Learn, practice, and train to compete in a series often outdoor events, and then join us in June to test your knowledge and skills at the Texas 4-H Outdoor Challenge! Registration will open on 4-H Connect in April. Check out the web page for contest rules and more details: http://texas4-h.tamu.edu/outdoor 2013 Texas 4-H Equine Ambassador Program Application process is currently open. Apply Online at the following link: EQUINE AMBASSADOR APPLICATION through April 30. The maximum number of 4-H Equine ambassadors will be 30. These participants will be chosen by the Texas AgriLife Equine Ambassador Committee. Application does not guarantee acceptance into the program. Applicants will be notified of their acceptance before registration opens on 4-H Connect June 1. The cost of the school will be $250.00 per participant. This will include meals, lodging and all materials. Students will not be allowed to stay elsewhere. Participation is open to all districts of the state; to 4-H youth ages 14-17 years of age with a genuine interest in the equine industry. Beginning on April 15 th, Purchase Certificates will be mailed to participants who have sent a copy of the thank you note to the Livestock Office. Please note that Purchase Certificates will not be mailed until a copy of the thank you note is received by the Livestock Office. After the Calf Scramble, participants should have received a letter that included the Calf Scramble deadlines and the name of their Donor. Shooting Sports District Shooting Sports Schedule Postal League- Benavides March 1-April 7 Rifle Benavides April 27 Shotgun- Laredo May 11 Archery- Benavides June 21 **Rifle Practices will be held on April 7 th, 14 th, and 21 st, 1pm at the **Shotgun Practices continue to be on Thursdays in April at 4pm** Seven Somerset 4-H Members participated in the 1st Annual San Antonio Livestock Exposition Junior Shootout at the National Shooting Complex. A total of $180,000 in scholarships and prizes were awarded to the winners of the event. Kendall Dickinson, Alejandro Garcia, and Yancey Miller made it to the Shoot Out for a chance to win prizes. VOLUNTEERS NEEDED In order to provide more shooting instruction and to offer different times and days to shoot, we ask that anyone interested in becoming a 4H Certified Shotgun or Rifle Instructor please contact the Extension Office. Livestock Judging Practice On Thursday April 4 th 2013at 5:00pm we will have our next Livestock Judging Practice at the Cowboys Fellowship Church. We will be practicing with the livestock that will be used for the FFA Contest. If you will be participating in the Area FFA Contest please do not come to this practice and we will see you on April 10. The April 10, 2013 practice will be held at Leroy Krueger s place to judge bulls. We will meet at the Extension Office at 5:30pm. On April 17, 2013 we will meet at Capitol Farm Credit at 5:00pm. District Livestock Judging Contest will be held on April 20 th in Fredericksburg at Gillespie County Fair Grounds. Hello fellow 4-Hers! My name is Kristan Jenschke and I m the new 4-H Program Assistant at the Extension Office. My hometown is Poteet and I was also in the 4-H and FFA programs. I graduated with my Bachelor s Degree in Wildlife Management from Tarleton State University. Go Texans!! I m also finishing my Master s in Range and Wildlife Management with CKWRI at Texas A&M University-Kingsville. I m an avid hunter and love to fish. April 5th is the deadline to register for County Roundup Contest at the extension office. Form included in newsletter. Roundup Contest will be April 16th, 5:30pm, Coastal Bend College, Pleasanton. Roundup consists of 49 competitive contests. The majority of these events require each individual or team to qualify at the county and district level. The Division categories are: Open related to skills learned in a project in which the 4 H member have been involved. Share the Fun: Poet/Prose, Celebrate 4 H, Vocal, Musical Band, and Choreographed Routines Educational Presentations: Public Speaking, Method Demonstration and Illustrated Talk Judging/Identification Quiz Bowls Skill A Thon **District Round Up Contest** Deadline April 24th Round Up Come by the extension office to find a category that might interest you. More info can be found at http://texas4 h.tamu.edu/roundup Election Convention The 2013 District 12 4-H Election Convention will be held on Friday, June 28, 2013 at Texas A&M University: Student Union Building in Kingsville. We have enclosed the Election Code (Revised 11/2008) and the Standing Rules (Revised 1/15/2011) adopted by the District Council. Please forward this information to your candidates and voting delegates and have them review these thoroughly. Filing opens immediately through the deadline of Thursday, April 23, 2013. Here is a list of important dates related to this event: April 23, 2013 Deadline for Candidacy Filing to run for office ( D12 4-H website) May 30, 2013 Deadline for Voter Registration to serve as a voting delegate (D12 4-H website) May 30, 2013 Deadline for Election Judge Applications (D12 4-H website) June 18, 2013 Deadline to RSVP for all attending youth, adults, and agents (D12 Connect) Please Note: There will be no Late Deadlines There will be a registration fee for all attending youth and adults through 4-H Connect. The fee will cover the cost of meals for all in attendance, along with Partial Cost Recovery fee for youth only. There are three different ways that a 4-H member can be involved in this year s Election Convention. They can be a Candidate, Voting/Alternate Delegate, or serve as an Election Judge. The registration and application process has changed a little this year so be sure to read this carefully.
