President s Corner Rob Mulcahy Volume 43 Issue 5 Special points of interest: Make sure your email address is current. A lot of reminders are sent out via BGSL BLAST Always check the club calendar for scheduled events on bgslinc.com Inside this issue: Casting Division 2 Youth / Archery 3 I have really enjoyed seeing everyone out and enjoying our club this spring. We have hosted many events already this year. The NSCA Zone 3 championship, the AIM (ATA Youth event) and several ATA events were held at shotgun. The pistol pits have an event every weekend. Gun Dog has undergone a major facelift. Bullseye and rifle have been busy. Casting is getting ready to host the 102nd Annual National Championships in August. Women on Target have had a fun year with many women getting more involved this year. In the past I would come to the BGSL facilities 3 or 4 times a year. When here I would shoot a few rounds at GP then go home. I started shooting trap about 2 years ago. Over the past year I have added skeet, sporting clays and the pistol events (IDPA, USPSA and the steel shootout). I have made many friends during this period. I have shot a lot and laughed even more than I ve shot. I would encourage everyone to try the different venues and get involved. You don t know what you re missing By Walter Miller for Rob (He is pretty busy this month) Important News Division articles are always needed for Sportsman Trails. Please let us know scores, events and other happenings in your division. Volume 43, Issue 5 Page 2 Casting Division News The Casting Division is preparing for the KY Open Casting Tournament on June 26 th & 27 th. If you are interested in watching distance casting, those events will be held on Saturday, June 26 th at the Kentucky Horse Park. This is a good chance to go out and see all the sights the Horse Park has to offer, as well as, check out the casting. The ponds next to the Main Clubhouse are now set up for the June 27 th accuracy events. You can get with Cajun Bill any day to get a casting plug and try your luck or just come out and observe. We know you can fish, but can you cast? For the 2010 National Casting Tournament, we will be hosting casters from across the United States and Canada. This is not a new sport, this is the 103 rd Annual National Tournament. We are soliciting door prizes for our banquet they can be anything, they don t have to be casting/fishing oriented. If you have something you would like to donate or know of someone who would like to be a sponsor please contact a division member. This is an honor for our club to host some of the best casters in the world and we want their experience to be the best we can provide. This National Tournament is also a chance for our Youth to gain national recognition. There are very few young people currently participating in our sport. If your youngster likes to fish, bring them out to practice a little casting - you never know, there may be a national medal in their future.

Archery Division News The Archery Division would like to invite all bow hunter and shooters (crossbow as well as traditional) to come out on the 2 nd Wednesday and 3 rd Thursday of each month to shoot with us. We will have a 3D shoot in July before our meeting on the 2 nd Wednesday as well as a NASP shoot for the Youth. Come out, tune in your bow, and enjoy shooting. *** Note there were not enough elementary school boys competing to offer awards in that category.

Page 4 Trap Division Trap Tips by Charlie If you read the first article regarding trapshooting, I finished with gun mount and eye dominance. I will continue with using your eyes properly while shooting trap targets. You must be able to see your target clearly before you can shoot it with accuracy. What do I mean by seeing the target clearly? After you mount your gun, place your eyes above the trap house in soft focus. Your eyes need to be still (not moving) when you call for your target. Your peripheral vision will pick up the target as it emerges from the trap house. You should then have your eyes see the target in sharp focus; try to see the rings on the target. When you have the target in sharp focus, your gun should be moved in a controlled manner to the target. Your eyes are the camera and the brain is the Central Processing Unit that will tell you when it is time to shoot. At first this will seem to be difficult, but seeing the target clearly covers a multitude of sins. With a little experience you will begin to see the target breaking right off the gun barrel. The worst habit in shooting is moving the gun when calling for the target or lifting your gun as soon as you see the target emerge from the trap house. It surely seems simple. Don t move your eyes until you see the target. Don t move your gun until you see the target in sharp focus. If you can master these basic principles, you will be ahead of the game. When you first start shooting trap, you really struggle with trying to do several things at once which enables you to break a high percentage of targets. You will be on the line with shooters with years of experience that seem to be able to break targets effortlessly, hanging the proverbial ink balls, one after another. Do not become discouraged, they had to learn, just like you. As my good friend Dr. Blackburn has said on more than one occasion, I have shot up a Blue Grass farm down the barrel of a shotgun. There is a reason that they (experienced trapshooters) break targets, they use good fundamentals on each and every shot. They break them one at a time and they have short memories when they miss (besides you can t change a lost target). I do want to thank Walter Miller for helping with getting the articles posted in the Sportsmen s Trail and Bill Blackburn for editing my articles. Their help is greatly appreciated. Charlie Becknell President of the Trap Division Introduction to trapshooting, #2. A special thank you to Colin Baker for all his help with our website. Keep watching it s going to get better.
