Unit2L.4: Care of the environment (Habitats) Care of the environment Industry and the environment Science skills: Observing Inferring Collecting and interpreting data (record) By the end of this unit you should be able to: Know that the natural environment must be cared for. Know that habitats and animals live there are diverse and understand why habitats need to be protected. 23

2.4.2 Natural Environment There are many types of natural environments on earth. Living things depend on the natural environment for food, water and shelter. This is known as a habitat and it provides everything for living things to survive. Habitat: A natural environment that living things depend on. Activity: Look at the pictures. Birds live in forest. What would happen for birds when man removes the forest? 24

The Jerboa lives in the desert. Have you ever seen one? What do you think would happen to it, if lots of rubbish was thrown in the desert? When humans change or pollute a natural habitat it can affect the plants and animals that live there. Sometimes the change is so big that plants and animals become endangered or extinct. 25

Care of the environment We can all do things to care for the natural environment and protect habitats for plants and animals. Activity: Choose an environment from the list below. Work in pairs to fill in the Y Chart on what your environment; looks like, sounds like, and feels like (including happy, sad, worried etc) Environments: rubbish dump, beach, desert, rainforest, car park, play ground, snow field. 26

Activity: Sea shore Audit You will need pencil, clipboard, camera, rubber gloves and rubbish collection bag. Life science Steps: In groups of 3 you are going to do a tour around the sea shore. Share the roles during your walk. Recorder: will draw a map for the sea shore and mark off information on the map. Photographer: Takes photos of any litter and the group working. Caretaker: Will use rubber gloves to pick up litter and put in collection bag. Using your map to mark off these things; Rubbish Bins Locations Litter How many bins did you find in the grounds? Where did you find the most litter? Was litter near or far away from the bins? What was the main type of litter found? 27

Activity 4: Part 1: Brainstorm Brainstorm a list of ideas that could help care for the environment. This could be outside in the natural environment or even in your classroom! IDEAS 28

Part 2: Tournament Priorities Use the tournament priorities to vote for the best idea for the school. Steps: 1- Choose 4 of your group s brainstorm ideas to put into the list under Round 1. 2- In your group vote for the best idea between 1 and 2 - the winner goes to Round 2. 3- Do the same for ideas 3 and 4 - that winner also goes to Round 2. 4- Now vote for the winner! Round 1 Round 2 WINNER! 1... 2... 3... 4... 1... 2... 1... 29

2.4.3 Life science Qatar Environment Qatar has some unique natural environments. In these environments are plants and animals that can t be found anywhere else. Desert Mangrove Activity 5: Research about some of plants and animals that live in Qatar s desert or mangroves. Design a poster about a plant or animal and its environment. Things to include: Name, where it is found, what it needs to live, threats - problems, solutions why people should care and what can be done to help protect it. Conservation: is caring for and protecting the natural environment. 30

Shahaniya Wildlife Park is one example of conservation areas in Qatar: This area was one of the first to be established in Qatar for the captive breeding of Arabian oryx and gazelles. Why has this been done? Life science Project: The national environmental programme A Flower Each Spring celebrates every year by one of Qatar environment flower. They select Shiran (purple orchid) flower as the theme of this year s activities. Make a brochure represents information about this flower, includes: A picture of the plant. Its habitat. Main features of this plant. 31

Law of camping: 1. Stay away from areas of plant distance of 50 meters. 2. Prohibits the cutting leaves or trees or shrubs or grass or weeds. 3. Prohibits tampering with cars or motorcycles, at random in the areas of plant. Industry and the environment Look at the picture, what is comes from the factory? How does this effect on the environment? 32

Some industries make changes that destroy or pollute environments. Some industries help protect or rebuild natural environments. There are many conservation projects to help animals or plants and their environment. Activity 6: Research what community and industry conservation projects are going on in Qatar. Speak to your teacher to arrange an expert to talk to the class or for a visit to see the project! Key Terms: Protect Habitat Environment Conservation Project Key Ideas: There are many ways to protect the environment. Anyone can be involved in conservation projects. 33

Key Questions: 1- Give 2 reasons why the natural environment is important for living things? 2- Draw a picture of a conservation project. Label your picture to explain what is being done to help. 34
