Chad Martin and Anderson Severino threw three and two scoreless frames, respectively. Martin relieved starter Daniel Ramos (1-1) with the bases loaded and nobody out in the fourth, and the RiverDog (5-6) righty managed to surrender just one inherited run on a sacrifice fly to go along with a pair of strikeouts. Martin allowed one hit and punched out five West Virginia (6-5) hitters in his three innings. Anderson Severino pitched to contact in the final two innings, giving up no runs on two hits, and the lefty reliever rolled a double-play ball in the ninth. With five scoreless innings on Saturday, the Charleston bullpen has allowed merely two earned runs in 40 innings, good for an 0.44 ERA. At the dish, Steven Sensley provided another extra base hit with a sixth-inning RBI double off Braeden Ogle (1-0) which plated Wilkerman Garcia. Third baseman Chris Hess stayed red hot as he reached base twice, improving his average to.342. Doggie Bites: New Kid on the Block: Outfielder Matt McPhearson was promoted to Charleston before Saturday s game, and was immediately plugged into the nine slot and designated hitter role. In his second at-bat, the lefty slapped a single to the opposite field, and used off his great speed to advance to second on a throw home. Defensive Gems: The Charleston pitching staff got help from its defense on a pair of plays in the later innings. Second baseman Oswaldo Cabrera eliminated a lead runner following a slick sliding stop into the hole, and center fielder Leonardo Molina cut down Oneil Cruz trying to score for the third out of the fifth inning. The Sixth Sens(ley): Few hitters in the league have gotten off to a better start than Charleston s lefty masher Steven Sensley. The Baton Rouge, LA native is off to a blistering 14-for-39 (.359) start at the dish, an average that ranks seventh in the league, while also reaching base at a.468 clip (3rd) and slugging.744 (2nd) after crushing his third home run on Saturday. His 27 total bases is tied for second in the SAL trailing only Nationals No. 2 prospect Juan Soto. A Matchup Nightmare: Steven Sensley s three home runs this season have all come against left-handed pitchers. The lefty slugger is 9-17 (.529) against southpaws in 2018, with six of those hits going for extra bases. Sensley has a history of punishing righties as well. After being drafted last June, Sensley hit.302 with 11 home runs and 40 RBI against dextral hurlers in 2017. Hammerin Hess: With three home runs in his first 10 games, infielder Chris Hess is one of nine hitters in the South Atlantic League with three or more home runs, sitting tied for third on the leaderboard. Hess had no home runs when he hit just.185 in his pro debut last season in 39 games. His.632 slugging percentage also ranks amongst the top-5 in the league. Right Out of the Gates: The RiverDogs have scored 10 of their 36 runs this season in the first inning. Despite the early offensive outbursts, Charleston is just 2-5 when scoring first this year and 3-1 when their opponents score first. You Mess with the Bull(pen), you get the Horns: The RiverDogs bullpen has started off the season on a dominant run, allowing just two earned in 41.0 innings to start the year (good for a 0.44 ERA). Charleston s relievers were the strength of the playoff-caliber 2017 team, accounting for a league-low 1.98 ERA with 581 strikeouts in 509.1 innings. Pinstriped Prospects: Once again, the RiverDogs tap into one of the premier farm systems in baseball with the New York Yankees. Recently rated the second-best farm system by Baseball America pre-season and the sixth-best by MLB.com, the Bronx Bombers boast five of MLB.com s Preseason Top-100 prospects.
