Go to www.wbhslsc.org.au We re on the beach again ready for to get into another season of fun, sun, sand and surf with our Nippers! After trying something different last season, we ve decided to return to the traditional Point Score program for 2016/17. There s still going to be a big emphasis on fun and non-competitive skills development at Nippers days and we hope that we ll see lots of Bonny Hills Nippers representing our club at carnivals. A quick reminder that we need active involvement of ALL parents in our Nippers program. It means we can provide the safest environment possible, and more hands and more ideas mean the best possible experience for our kids. Please don t hesitate to contact any of our Age Managers or club committee members if you have any questions. PRELIMINARY SKILLS EVALUATION Before a child can participate in any Nippers event, they must complete the Preliminary Skills Evaluation. This will be carried out at Laurieton Pool on our first club day, Sun 9th October 2016 at 9am. In order to compete at carnivals, U/9 - U/14 Nippers will also be required to successfully complete an ocean swim in the following weeks. Full details of proficiency requirements for each age group are available on page 5. NIPPER CLUB DAYS Wauchope-Bonny Hills SLSC aims to create an atmosphere where children from age 6 to 14 can have fun, gain confidence in the surf and learn valuable surf awareness skills. We gather in front of the clubhouse on Nipper Club Days for a 8:45am start. Activities run for approximately two hours, depending on the weather/beach conditions, numbers etc. Club days normally involve events including beach sprints, relays, wades, surf swims, board paddling, ironman and board rescue (depending on the child s age group) plus fitness, games and leadership skills. We are also involved in a range of carnivals, leadership camps and other activities during the season. See the Nippers Calendar for details and refer to the website and Facebook Group regularly for any changes or updates. Parents MUST remain on the beach at all times with their child and to assist their Age Managers where practical. Assistance setting up the beach from 8am for Club Days is always appreciated. 2
ATTENDANCE Parents need to ensure their child is signed in on arrival and out on departure from Nippers club days and carnivals. Age Managers maintain attendance records and parents must be present for children to be signed out. Children must have 75% attendance at club days to be eligible for Surf Education Awards and end of season recognition. POINT SCORE DAYS WBHSLC s Point Score days are when points are awarded for place getters in Nippers events. All children are encouraged to participate and points go towards our end of season recognition and Championship awards. There are three Point Score days on our Nippers program for the 2016/2017 season. U6 and U7 s participate in Surf Life Saving on an educational basis only. National regulations prevent us from differentiating between children of this age by awarding places: 1st, 2nd, 3rd etc. On Point Score days the normal Nippers program will run for U6 and U7s. SURF CARNIVALS Carnivals bring together nippers from different clubs to compete in beach and surf events together. Children in the U/8 U/14 age groups who have completed the relevant proficiency requirements can participate in these as individuals or as part of a team. AGE MANAGERS Surf Life Saving Australia requires one Age Manager and at least one assistant for each Nippers group of U/8 U/14 s. For the U/6 and U/7 age groups, a higher ratio of adults to children is required. If you can assist, please let your childs Age Manager know. Every Nipper must have a parent/guardian in attendance on the beach at all times. All club members over the age of 18 are required to complete a Working with Children Check. This check can be started online at no cost for volunteers. BBQ A BBQ follows Nippers club days and our canteen stocks cold drinks, ice-creams and other refreshments. Each Nippers age group is rostered on to assist with the BBQ and canteen. Check the Nippers calendar for when your child s age group is rostered on. 3
