NIPPER NEWSLETTER 30th October 2015 Hi Everyone, Nippers was great at the weekend. I had nippers at Greenmount first up where all the age groups enjoyed a little extra room with the Under 8-10 s at Pacific and then I got time to head up to the carnival where our little dudes were going fantastically. We had perfect conditions for getting our competition swims completed. It was flat and clear and starting to warm up. All the age groups were able to complete their swims. Again we had great water safety 1
Our coaches came to nippers and gave great instructions on the boards and in the flags. The U12 s were briefed before tackling the boards Taddies got busy on the point with Ben, Sienna s (Under 11) Dad. 2
Our beach specialists learnt board rescue Very experience retired age managers returned to look after the Nippers that weren t at the carnival. Under 13 s learning how to do a board rescue on an unconscious patient. Fortunately that is Hughie Thomas s favourite position. Another great day. 3
Under 8 to 10 s Teams Carnival @ Pacific The Under 8 s, 9 s and 10 s all headed to the first branch carnival of the year. The teams carnival is all relays and is an annual event that is always the under 8 s first ever carnival. I got there for the last hour and was thrilled with the happy faces and cheering supporters and the determine looks on all of the nippers. All the under 8 s performed admirably to the best of their abilities. They were easy going and got on well for the 5 hours they spent together on the beach. They cheered each other on, as did the very supportive parents. Overall, a very solid and fun start for these kids in their carnival experience. Special mention to Carmen who came super prepared with highlighters for paperwork and plenty of black markers to label sunscreened arms!! 4
It was a great day for the TH & C Nippers on Sunday with the Under 9 Croc's delivering fantastic results. It was our first time a competition in a Cameron race and we look forward to being in more. Our beach sprint relay teams showed great speed finishing first. The Pocket Rocket, Kaiya Tom, with Lillian Beadham, Callie Erikson and Kailash Bowen were just amazing sprinting to the line with daylight second. Congratulations to all the others for their effort. The Crocs had a great time in the Wade relay with Izzy Boucher, Charlie Anderson, Draven Gabriel and William Turner giving us an awesome effort. A big congrats to Scarlett Sadler, Cooper Thompson, Zac Felsman and Mikaela Mulheran for their amazing effort all day. Especially would like to thank all the parents for their support on the day, the kids loved it. We will be looking forward to our next carnival. The results was also great. It s rare for TH&C to beat Tallebudgera and Palm Beach, so we are thrilled with the second to Currumbin. 1 Currumbin SLSC 62 2 Tweed Heads Coolangatta SLSC 35 3 Tallebudgera SLSC 23 4 Pacific SLSC 22 5 Palm Beach SLSC (QLD) 16 6 Tugun SLSC 11 5

Training Great attendance through the week at training and I think our fantastic results at the under 8 s to 10 s team carnival is a direct reflection of it. BBQ Thanks for your help on the week end and another solid deposit in our bank account gives us more opportunity to provide great things for our Nippers In case you have missed it, each family will have one member of their family assist with the BBQ on a Sunday during the season. We are keen to group you with your friends and get you a date that suits you so please see Darren Boucher around the BBQ to book a Sunday. Get it done and that s your BBQ effort done for the season. This week end their will be an A1 sheet for each family to sign up for a Sunday where they will work the BBQ. The BBQ is a solid source of revenue for us and every cent goes back to your nippers. Uniforms Our uniforms are a lot of hard work thanks to Tara and Leoni. They are not part of your fees but an extra gift from our sponsors. Our under 8-15 s sun shirts distribution will continue this Sunday. Come early and get sorted. Our Swimwear is due in the second week of November. We are very close to securing our hat sponsor that will complete our carnival uniform. Don t forget our sponsor depth industries is subsidising a great club long sleeve rashie for a bargain price. End of Years Presentation Awards Good Sports, Most Improved, Encouragement Awards Nippers is a team sport. It is so important that we reward and encourage participation, sportsmanship and celebrate improvement. A Nipper that finishes the season with their first swim around the cans is every much as important to our movement as the Nipper that has been first around the cans all season. All of these awards are in the form of a trophy of each type for each age group. Often it becomes so difficult for the bigger age groups that we need to look at some extras. The age mangers get together and assess these awards. Often it s really hard. Last year under 10 s had a couple of extra awards for a big and really great age group. The good sports award is generally a nipper that see supporting and encouraging other nippers as really important. It s the nipper that can handle the official s decision when maybe it s not truly fair. Coping with unexpected knocks is a valuable trait in life and Nippers. We celebrate Nippers with those characteristics Most improved award could be our Nipper that finally come first in everything but it s more likely to be the Nipper that has come to terms with swimming the cans or negotiating the surf on a board when balance was an issue at the start of the season. Again this is a valuable life trait. The encouragement award is a trophy given to someone brave, someone on the cusp of making a big achievement and we really want them to come back next season and achieve greatness. Again this is a special award not given out without difficulty. See you at the beach! Vaughn Thomas Nipper President 9
NIPPER SECRETARY HELP WANTED / POSITIONS VACANT (STILL) The nippers need a secretary to help with the day to day running of the Nippers. Helping behind the scenes and on Nipper Sundays. It is a committee position and as such the secretary gets to vote on any of our important decisions. On Nipper Sunday the secretary help by being present to field any enquires, new members, point people in the right direction. They jump in where ever some help is needed, be it uniform distribution, BBQ or club administration. Unfortunately not everyone you deal with is happy, but you can refer them to the President or Vice president. They prepare minutes from about 6 meeting a year, distribute them and follow up key items. During the week they may be required to complete some admin like chase some quotes for a jumping castle, see the ladies in administration to ensure an invoice is paid, make sure some carnival entries are done, fill some gaps, etc Really it is an extra person, on point, that is involved, that learns where everything is and is willing to help people. You will ask a lot of questions and we will help you. Please talk to, phone or email Vaughn. WATER SAFETY COURSE STARTS NOVEMBER 1 Nippers is all about the Nippers being in the water. There are very strict ratios of Nippers to water safety enforced at both training, Nippers Sunday and carnivals. They are 1 water safety to 5 nippers. If you are ever wondering why your Nipper is standing waiting, getting cold on the beach it is because we don t have adequate cover to put more Nippers in the water at one time. We have to wait for another age group to get out of the water to put another group in. Often we have to give the water safety the chance to recover a little as well. If you were willing to get qualified you would be able to work closely with your Nippers age group. You will be taught the skills to help teach the Nippers skills. You will be taught how to rescue someone and how to perform CPR on someone. They are noteworthy skills There are two qualifications. The Bronze qualification is slightly more onerous that the Surf Rescue Certificate but is a much better award. There is a required pool swim. The Bronze award is 400m in 9 minutes and the SRC is 200m in 5 minutes. You will be trained while we or your partner looks after your children at Nippers. There will be some proficiency tests and you will be required to do the run swim run that we make the nippers do each Sunday. The club is hoping that you will sign up for a patrol. I love my patrols. You can t do any chores and you generally pick which other members you want to hang out with. That being said the club is accepting of the fact that some proficient members are just Nipper water safety. It may be a long run but they expect you will be ready to patrol with your Nipper when they are in the under 14 s. We are starting a training squad really soon so let Vaughn know if you are interested and see if you can get a pool coach to sign off on your swim. We have a few club members that can also catch up with you at a local pool and sign you off Please talk phone or email Vaughn. 10
