the Rip 16 March 2017 WHAT S UP? more details at www.albanysurfclub.com Congratulations to Fergus Martin for bringing home Gold in the Board Race! The first Nippers Gold at State champs for some time I think. Heaps of other amazing efforts by the kids last weekend and also the parents coaching, managing and supporting them. There were heaps of Albany kids in finals over the 2 1/2 days of competition in Perth and I know they did us really proud well done guys! This weekend its more competition with the ASLSC Junior Club Championships our kids get to compete against each other in every discipline to not only decide the winners but obviously to simply get into it and have fun. I hope you have a great morning on Sunday and we will be cheering ALL of you on! Seniors it s your turn the following weekend. It s too late to train now if you haven t started but have a crack anyway its always good fun and there is the odd good performance (by those who have trained!). St Patricks Celebrations at the club Friday night! Think stew, potato and Guinness. Come and join us for a bit of fun and raise some money for a new Surf Boat in 2018 that s the goal! Nippers Junior Club Champs Day SUNDAY MARCH 19 0900 This Sunday is our last day of Nippers, and is therefore also Junior Club Champs Day. Note-Club Champs Day runs longer than the usual Nipper Sunday. We endeavour to have presentations at approx. 1100 but depending on conditions on the day this may change. Please read the following info on the day. Age Groups U8 (yellow) through U14 (Blue) will compete in the 4 disciplines of beach sprint, beach flags, surf race, and board race. Purple caps will attend and participate in fun based activities as normal. Additionally (and time permitting) the U11-U14 will finish the day with the Iron Person. Juniors are welcome to compete in any or all of the events. Points will be allocated as follow: 1 st 10 points 2 nd 8 points 3 rd 7 points 4 th 6 points Finisher 5 points Nippers must have attended a total of 6 Sundays/carnivals to be eligible to be named Club Champion. Nippers must compete in the age group they have competed in throughout the season. Those competing in age groups below their age are welcome to participate but will not be eligible for Club Champ Points. All points in each age group (boy and girl) will be totalled and a Club Champion and runner up will be awarded at presentations at the conclusion of events. Nippers will receive some light refreshments prior to presentations whilst results are being tallied. (Please note a further presentation of weekly point score winners will be made for each age group at the wind-up) Whilst we will try to replicate a Surf Carnival environment I trust that competitors and supporters alike will enjoy the days events, feeling a sense of healthy competition and good sportsmanship. Our Nippers should feel very proud of the progress they have made throughout the season on their journey as young lifesavers. Their efforts are to be applauded. I would also like to take this opportunity to thank Andrew and all of our volunteers who have given their valuable time and expertise to make this season a successful one.

Nipper State Champs @ Trigg Is. SLSC 11/12 March Please take the time to peruse the many Top 10 results below. A huge amount of work goes into the Nippers standing on the line at a State Championship, from the coaches, water safety, AGM s and parents comes a commitment to giving these competitors a chance to shine. And shine they did! 32 competitors from WA lined up in each of the qualifying events of sprint, flags, board and iron (surf race has 64!). Heats are contested, then finals. As you will see below from the results, our Nippers performed extremely well. Nippers also had the additional challenge of a taxing programme that saw them backing up for event after event with little or no rest. Their courage here was outstanding. An unexpected bonus of the weekend was the number of great contacts we have made with other clubs-bunbury, Secret Harbour, Coogee, Dongara-Denison, Binningup and Mandurah. We look forward to a continued relationship with these clubs. Huge thanks to Perdie and Nadine for their invaluable assistance here, and to Deon, our dark horse who found teams where no teams could be found-quite a talent. So, enough from me-see the results below. Albany sent a team of 15 competitors (note only 16 qualified so this in itself is fantastic)-our biggest team yet- and finished 16th overall on 22 Points 8 th on handicap. After Individual events had run it was time to get down to teamwork. Due to our small team size this was only made possible by joining with other clubs and kids willingness to compete up in age groups. It was fantastic to see the kids teaming up with so willingly with new mates from other clubs.

Fergus Martin U13 State Champ- Board Race Huge congratulations to Fergus Martin, on winning Gold in the U13 Board Race on the weekend. A fantastic achievement breaking the ASLSC Gold Medal drought. Ferg has had a lot of help along the way to this medal from his amazing coaches. His dedication to training and single-minded goal of a state medal have certainly paid off. Fergus is also to be congratulated as the recipient of the SLSWA young achiever award on the weekend. His selection was based on comments from his coach, Dean and his AGM Dani, on his commitment and positive attitude, sense of humour and sportsmanship shown to his peers. Well Done Ferg your club is very proud of you. SLSWA State Champs News : http://surflifesavingwa.com.au/news-events/news/2017-sunsmart-wanippers-state-championships-wrap

TUESDAY TRAINING WRAP UP The questionable weather didn t stop Nippers turning up in force for the last Tuesday Training of the season. After a frenetic beep test some red faces hit the water to blow off steam. Our wonderful coaches and water safety who have taken these kids through the season. Everyone has improved their skills and fitness in surf sports-and had great fun along the way. Lets here it for Water Coaches-Rob Slatts, Gav, Dean, Kevin, Jason and Lynda and Jo. And also our Beach coaches Nadine, Dinah, Helena, Jo. Thank you as always to the orange rashies led by Les for keeping them safe, with a special mention to the cadets (Harry and Freya) who turned up week after week to assist.
