JAC REPORT Another nipper year has come to an end and I hope that all the nippers and their parents have enjoyed the season. This has been my 3rd season as the Junior Activities Co-ordinator and it has always been my main objective to see all the nippers have fun and enjoy their Sunday mornings, jump in and have a go at all the activities and try their best from what I saw across the beach on the Sunday mornings we achieved this and it was great to see the nippers improve and gain more confidence throughout the season. Over the course of the season Ocean Beach competed at all 4 local junior carnivals plus the State Titles. This season we also had competitors compete in the Newcastle Permanent Iron Man Series, the Gardener Iron Man at Wamberal. A group of the Under 14 s also competed at the open branch carnival in the Under 15 age group and came away with some fantastic results. It was fantastic to see the Ocean Beach colours being worn proudly at these carnivals, the nippers cheering on their team mates across all age groups, backing up for other age groups and showing great sportsmanship at the end of the day it s about the nippers enjoying the sport and having fun. Over the season OB was one of a few clubs who would compete in all the events thanks to the parents and coaches who arrived early for the R&R and March Past. Ocean Beach had some great results from these carnivals and have improved again on the success they had last season - for such a small club it is a great to see all the training is paying off a - all the nippers whether they won or not should be proud of their efforts and flying the OB colours proudly. Whether it be the great results at the carnivals or the improved efforts at the activity days during the year a big thank you must go to all the coaches and their assistants. On the beach Donna Hannell has done a great job teaching the young nippers how to start there beach sprints, working on their flag technique and working on their relay baton changes. Again it was great to see age groups backing up the age groups above and allowing them and OB to field the relay teams. In the water it was fantastic to see good numbers at training again this season in fact the numbers have increased from last season. Thanks to Matt Smithers assistance at board training helping out the kids with technique and their fitness. Also a big thank you to all the water safety without you guys the kids wouldn t be able to train. A little more focus on swimming fitness this season has helped and having the permanent can set has been great it s a long swim for the kids but has proved beneficial towards the back end of the season and will be helpful for the start of next season. Efforts in the water at both nipper days and carnivals is on the improve and hopefully we can continue in the right direction. Peter Lambeth and his assistant coaches have again done a great job with the R&R competitors we have been able to introduce new younger teams and the results have been fantastic. Thanks for your dedication throughout the year training twice a week and if the conditions were not good on the beach transferring the training to the club house. All the R&R teams should be proud of their achievements dominating in both the 2 person and 5 person teams at all the local carnivals and being very competitive at the state. 5

A lot of effort goes into organising the nippers and we could not have had a great season without the help of a lot of people. A lot of work is done behind the scenes and I would like to thank all that helped out: All the Age Managers as always your dedication and commitment to your age group was fantastic and very much appreciated. Taking your time to educate and train the nippers will be invaluable to them as they move up through the age groups right up until they become life savers. All the parent helpers and parent assistants your help early Sunday mornings setting up, recording attendance, helping the Age Managers during the activity days and at carnivals and packing up after nipper days without you guys I don t know what I would do. All water safety and officials without your help whether it be activity days or carnivals the nippers would not be able to compete. Trainers and coaches. Our recorders, starters and judges for point score days. Our Rookie Co-ordinator thanks Jason great job - your help was appreciated and made my job so much easier. Jordan Smith the clubs Education Director I am sure the kids enjoyed their education and sleep over this season. To all the mums and dads thanks for getting the kids to the nipper days and carnivals. I am sure the nippers enjoyed seeing you there, encouraging and cheering on all the kids. I am sure they would have also loved seeing you getting involved with the activities. Belinda Thompson for all your help with the Carnival entries and communications throughout the season and your help organising the presentation. OB executive for their support and assistance throughout the year. Overall I have enjoyed another season as JAC and hope that all the nippers have had fun, learnt some surf education and will be looking forward to next season make sure you bring a friend next year. I would also like to think that the parents have also enjoyed the season. I would like to encourage you to continue getting actively involved with the kids I am sure the kids would love seeing you being part of the team. Finally thanks to my family the JAC position does take up some time and I would like to thank you for their patience. Looking forward to seeing you all back on the beach enjoying nippers next season. Shane Oakes 6

Under 6 s & Under 7 s Report This season our Under 7s were managed by a very dedicated Dad, Scott Chippendale while I worked with our newest U6 Nippers. Thank you again Scott for all your help, we couldn t have done it without you. We were also blessed to have two fabulous young ladies helping us - Miss Kate and Miss Angelina working with us as Assistant Age Managers. These young ladies were invaluable, particularly when we had larger numbers of children participating. Cameron s big Brother Zander was an amazing help and we were very grateful to him also, thank you Zander. At the beginning of the season we had lots of new smiling faces joining our fabulous club, in addition to many of our Under 6s returning from the previous season with approximately 30 Nippers commencing the 2016/2017. My objective when working with these Baby Nippers is to:- Increase their water confidence Have fun Know they must always swim between the flags How to signal for help Body surf and catch waves into shore Have fun Keep safe in larger waves by duck diving Float and tread water and Have fun with beach sprints and relays Logistics and Nipper numbers saw us meld the age groups on regular occasions and this proved most beneficial for the younger children being able to watch and learn from their slightly older age group co-hort. The weather conditions were kinder to us than the previous season and the Nippers, right from the very first day, were keen and eager to get their toes wet irrespective of the conditions. Our water activities and by far the most favorite water activity was Rockets aka body surfing, along with Duck Dives and Starfish Floating. I knew from the very first day we were going to have a great season when so many of our Baby Nippers fearlessly wanted to launched themselves into the waves. 7

As the season progressed it was a priveledge to see the children s confidence and skill set grow. I was most thrilled to see many of the Under 7s actually combining these water skills in the Wade Race. They would sprint fast into the water, duck dive across the back then wait to catch a wave into The children were not just enthusiastic but some oh so very competitive and particularly in our other activities like the Wade, Buckets and Crocodiles Relay and the Beach Sprints. While I m certainly all about just having fun, I m confident there will be a few Medallists in our future. At the time of writing Miss Kate will be following our Under 7 s into the bigger league of Under 8 s with Scott Chippendale as Assistance Age Manger. We all look forward to the next 2017/2018 season and God willing I will remain as Under 6s Age Manager. However if there is a parent out there that would like to help me with Age Managing the Under 7s this will be most appreciated. If you re keen to follow this Age Group through, please speak to either Shane Oakes or myself. Lastly but most importantly a huge thank you to you, Parents, Guardians, extended family and friends that joined us on the beach, helping with mustering the children and providing water safety. We couldn t do this without you and know that your children love having you there watching and helping. Keep smiling and we can t wait to see you all back on the beach next summer. Kylie and Scott Kate and Angelina 8

Under 8 s Report Wow what a great year. It was great to see some returning faces and it was also great to see that we had a lot of new faces. This season we spent time improving on skills which we started to learn last season, sprints and sprint relays were a hit, as was our wade and wade relay and flags, with our main focus of having fun, working as a team and learning new skills. 9

This season saw our debut to the local carnival circuit. We participated in 4 local carnivals; Wamberal, Toowoon Bay, Terrigal and Branch championships at Umina Beach. Although the carnivals were early starts and long days we always had a smile on our faces and our determined effort to give it a go. Well done to our carnival competitors, Rei, Joshua, Lucas, Leroy, Ami, Isabella, Taylah, Amelie, Lily, Breanna, Ellie, Ebony, Madilyn and Leilani. To all those who didn t attend a carnival, I urge you to give it a shot next season! We continued in our beach safety and education this year with the inaugural education night and sleepover. On the night we learnt more on how to identify a rip current, basic first aid and the grand tour of our clubhouse, followed by a BBQ and movie. I think the kids had a great night (as well as the brave parents who also stayed). On the beach, we started to learn hand and flag signals as well as refreshing our learning on beach and sun safety. Towards the end of the season, we started as a group board training ready for next season which was met with much delight, and the enthusiasm showed is simply amazing! As we sign off for another season, we would like to say a big thank you to everyone who has assisted this season to the parents and caregivers for bringing your child each week and assisting with activities on the beach, water safety, carnival officials and club members, we couldn t have done it without you. Take care and see you next season! Gavin Falconer & Kiara Rybie 10

Under 9 s Report It is that time of year again when the temperature starts to drop, parents finally get to clean out our cars and we all get to sleep in on a Sunday mornings maybe. Jason and I would like to take this opportunity to thank the children and all the parents for turning up every Sunday, helping out and attending carnivals. This season, Under 9 s, you have made Jason and I laugh, you have made us happy and you have made us frustrated at times. But mostly, you have made us proud. It has been amazing to see all of the under 9 s grow as individuals. Every Sunday, it was great to see all of the children working hard improving their skills both in the water and on the sand, and many taking on their fears head on. Compared to previous tears, the under 9 s has been very challenging, with the introduction of the ocean swim and board events. At carnivals, we started to make inroads. This season we have had more competitors reaching the semi finals and finals in events consistently compared to last year. Once again, Thank you Under 9 s for this season. Enjoy the off season and see you all in October. Tanya & Jason 11

Under 10 s Report Donna approached me at last years presentation, she surprised me by asking if I would be interested in becoming Age Manager for the group of kids she and Mel had worked with for several years. This must have been a difficult decision as I know Donna loves helping the kids learn. It did not take me long to accept the offer. I am glad I did as I too have really enjoyed watching, teaching and having fun with what is a fantastic bunch of kids. Luckily Donna s circumstances changed a little and she was able to come back and co-manage the kids with me. As a rookie Age Manager, I was very grateful to have her experience and knowledge throughout the season. After the carnivals when I had to make a speech, I would always finish and then think, I forgot to thank Donna. Too muddled after having to speak/mumble in front of that many people. But here it is in one big go. Thankyou Donna As I have stated, I really enjoyed spending time with the under 10 nipper group this year. Watching these kids learn new skills, watching them try their best and seeing the smiles on their faces when they completed an event, knowing they had achieved something special. Whether at Sunday nipper training or at Carnivals. The year was not without its challenges. Speeches (or in my case, mumbles) after carnivals for one, also trying to find justice when a result is handed down wrongly at a carnival, and the frustration of finding out you basically have next to zero recourse to fix the situation. But my biggest challenge was trying to sort out teams for board and sprint relay events, this was only difficult because we had so many kids that were very closely matched in skills and competitiveness. I took the approach that I would get them together as a group, put the situation to them, and come up with a solution that kept everyone involved as much as possible. I was extremely surprised and happy with how mature all the kids handled these situations. By either opting themselves out to give someone else a go or accepting the tough decision I had made without complaint. A big Thankyou to the kids for making this process a little easier. We had some tremendous results with these teams, with hard earned points for the club and even a couple of medals. All of the under 10 boys and girls can be proud of the effort they put in, the way they represented Ocean Beach, and the personal results they achieved this season. To the under 10 parents that jumped in and helped out, Thank you. We cannot run nippers without your help. Thankyou also to parents from every age group that assisted with carnivals, water safety and Sunday morning set up. 12

I feel the year was a success. Mostly because the kids enjoyed it, also because I could see they were learning and implementing new skills. I look forward to seeing as many as possible at the presentation, who knows what awards might be won. More importantly I hope to see you all again next season, along with some new faces if you have friends that would like to join. And hopefully I will again be able to age manage you guys, we can continue to teach each other and enjoy the successes that I am sure await us. Again, to the boys and girls of the under 10 s Thanks for a great year. Matt 13

Under 11 s Report Another season for under 11 s done and dusted. Over the season you have all progressed, we have watched you all take that step further towards your goals and the improvements have been astounding well done. This year has been the biggest and most challenging year in your nipper life compared to other years. You have conquered a larger swim, the transition to fiberglass boards, participation in tube and board rescues and pushed the limit in the challenging iron man races. Some of you are starting to expand your passions and attend other carnivals outside of our branch carnivals keep this up, it is a fantastic experience for you to further your skills in unfamiliar beaches. To watch the hard work and dedication from kids of such a young age is tremendous. It has been a pleasure to be your age managers and look forward to seeing you all back at OB next season. Tim and Richelle 14

U12 s Report 2016 2017 Under 12 Nippers had 6 competitors this year. The under 12 Nippers completed the Surf Smart 1 this year. We are all so proud of the way they handled it. All of the Nippers have improved in all areas and had fun doing it. This year we had 4 carnivals (including State at Swansea Belmont). The first carnival was at Wamberal Beach we had Reiley Squires attend. Reiley went in everything and kept the flag flying for the U12 s. The second carnival was at Toowoon Bay we had 1 boy and 3 girls. It was a great day all the U12 s tried hard and went in everything they were able too. The new time table makes it a very long day and there were no complaints they just took it in their stride. The third carnival was at Terrigal we had 4 girls, Mercedes, Hayley, Reiley & Ella. Reiley, Ella & Hayley went in in the water events, Reiley came 9 th in the Board heat, 20 th in the Ironman & 24 th in the swim & competed in the flags & sprint. Hayley came 31 st in the swim & competed in the flags (great to see). Ella came 34 th in the swim and competed in the flags & sprint. Mercedes only competed in the beach events she came 7 th in her sprint heat and came 6 th in the flags (her best result so far). The girls backed up and came 4 th in their heat in the beach relay. A job well done. The Branch Carnival was at Umina Beach, we had 1 boy and 4 girls attend. Bryce went in every water event he could and help out in the U13 relays, he competed in the beach sprint and flags. Bryce put in a great effort and was stuffed at the end of the day. Hayley, Reiley & Ella competed in the water events and the beach sprint. Mercedes & Reiley competed in their first board rescue and came a credible 4 th in their heat (it was great to watch). Mercedes came 4 th in the flags (now her best result) she came 4 th in the heat of beach sprint and 5 th in the semi-final. We had Mercedes, Ella, Reiley and Chloe Quirk in the beach relay it was one of the last events in 46 degree heat and they came 7 th in their heat. I was very proud of the U12 s as they had to choose which events to do on a very hot day and they were supportive of each other. The State Carnival was at Swansea Belmont. We had 1 boy and 3 girls attend. Bryce, Mercedes, Hayley & Reiley. We all stayed at the same park and lots of fun was had. At the beach we put in a great effort and we can hold our heads high. Well done for putting in the effort to travel for our first touring team together. Finn was with us for 2016 part of the season and had to have an operation on his leg, it is looking good so can t wait to have him back in September 2017. All the children have improved so much in the water and the long swim is not an issue for anyone, they just kept going around and around those cans. The board races are getting so close now and if we ever get some swell it will be anybody s race. We had a great year and hope to see everyone again in the Under 13 s. Thanks to Jennifer Newton & all the parents for all your help and support with the kids this season. It is really appreciated especially at carnivals. To all the kids we are so proud of you, Well Done! Brett Newton 15

Under 13 s Report It hard to believe that in just a few weeks all the wonderful U13 s will close out their first season as patrolling Rookie Lifesavers! I m sure all of your patrol Captains would agree you have been assets to your patrol teams. Congratulations to all of you on your achievements this year. You have proudly represented OB at carnivals and improved on personals best. It was great to see so many of you start the season off by representing OB at the raising of the flags, as well as getting involved with Rookie Disco s and other functions that got you interacting with our other clubs around the coast. The change to the education day to a night/sleep over event definitely proved to be a popular choice and nice way to see you enjoy each other s company. There are always so many people to thank and recognize in a season, however special call out to Jasmine Rybie and Brett Newton for their commitment and support with the U13 s. Thank you for a wonderful season! Next year your journey continues with gaining your SRC and of course the transition to the Mals. May 16

U14 s Report What an amazing journey for an amazing group! It has been an absolute pleasure to watch this age group grow in their last season of nippers. The friendships you have formed have been a delight for all to see. At carnivals you have proudly represented your club, and for so many of you, it was exciting to see bring medals home as keep sakes from your nipper journey. So many of you got involved with what the Rookie program had to offer. From the season kick off, to the disco, the leadership camp at Broken bay, and to dominating at the Rookie Challenge at Terrigal. Congratulations! All successful in gaining your SRC award. This course really showed that there are skills and attributes you all hold that will compliment any patrol as well as any path you choose in the future. Thank you for an amazing journey and allowing me to share it with you and your families. May x 17

Junior R&R Team Report Once again it was pleasing that Ocean Beach continued the proud history of Rescue and Resuscitation being the premier event at Surf Carnivals. We had 7 members doing R&R in 2 Person and 5 Person events. Zara Smithers, Reiley Squires, Jenna Styant, Mercedes Newton, MacKenzie Squires, Mikaela Kelly and Hayley Doyle. This was Hayley, MacKenzie and Reiley s first year in R&R and they showed commitment, dedication and interest to do well at a high standard. To be good at R&R we trained Thursday and Sunday with the R&Rers always ready to train, polite and willing to improve as shown by the following results. Wamberal 6/11/16 Pinks Jenna and Zara 3 rd 2 Person R&R Toowoon Bay 27/11/16 Pinks Jenna and Zara 3 rd 2 Person R&R Blues Mercedes and Hayley 5 th 5 Person 2 nd MacKenzie, Hayley, Zara, Jenna and Mercedes Terrigal 15/1/17 Pinks Jenna and Zara 2 nd 2 Person R&R Blues Mikaela and Mercedes 4 th 5 Person 2 nd Mercedes, Jenna, Mikaela,Zara and Hayley Freshwater 26/1/17 Pinks Jenna and Zara 1 st Blues Mercedes and Mikaela 2 nd 5 Person R&R 1 st Branch Umina 5/2/17 Pinks Jenna and Zara 1 st 2 Person R&R Blues Mercedes and Mikaela 4 th 2 Person R&R 5 Person R&R 1 st Mercedes, Jenna, Mikaela, Zara and Hayley. We will be attending the State at Swansea Belmont in March with 3 x 2 Person and 1 x 5 Person R&R and hope to get all teams into the Finals and a Medal chance. A big thank you to Brett Newton for setting up our training day in January, Kath Styant, Selina Smithers, Louise Lambeth, Jen Newton and Cheryl Kelly for their assistance at training and carnivals. Also thanks to Grant Hayes for keeping R&R going in our Branch and all the Judges Drew Hayes, Dennis Fitzroy and Belinda Cohen (MacMaster Beach). More Judges are required so next season it would greatly assist R&R if you could assist us? Again thank you to all the wonderful R&Rers for the time they put into doing R&R. Peter W. Lambeth Junior R&R Coach. 18

Rookie Coordinator Report This year saw 23 keen Nippers took part in the rookie program. The program is for those in the age group of the U13's and U14's. the design of the program is to enable a smoother transition into patrol life after the nipper program has concluded. The program itself includes patrols, gaining correct awards and a branch run camp. This year saw many new faces and a few returning ones but everyone had lots to offer and gained a lot of experience both good and memorable. Despite some setbacks the group has achieved quite a lot examples include; - 3rd in the rookie challenge - 6 rookies at ducks for bucks - 7 rookies selected for the SLSCC development camp - 12 rookies at the Rookie disco - 11 rookies at raising of the flags - Over 2653 patrol hours and counting Rookie Camp: Over the course of the season the following rookies participated in Rookie camp, this took place on the 12th & 13th of November. The rookies took part in various activities that challenged them as well as they got the chance to interact with other rookies from other clubs on the central coast. The following rookies were: Liam Oakes, Liam drake, Jenna Styant, Zara Smithers, Hayden Doyle, Sean Turnbull, and Cooper Staunton. Rookie Disco: Every year the rookies are invited to the rookie disco. Like he last few years the theme of Halloween and the venue of North Avoca haven't change but it was good to see all the rookies dress up and participate in singing and dancing competition, like last year cooper stole the spotlight with his dress style. Chloe Gilby, Ben Mellross, Harry Mellross, Liam Oakes, Hayden Doyle, Zara Smithers, Georgia quirk, Mackenzie squires, Will Adams, Cooper Staunton, Mikayla Kelly and Billy Pritchard All went to the disco and had a blast. Rookie Challenge: This year we saw six people put their hands up for challenge. Against great odds, some staked teams, very ordinary conditions at Terrigal Cooper Staunton Hayden Doyle Liam drake Nicole Majask Will Adams Mackenzie squires All performed very well on the day and finished off with a third place but sheer luck the team got drawn out last for the prizes but were very good sports. Also thanks to Hayley Doyle for stepping up and going into the entrance team so they could compete and Jenna Styant for supporting the team on the day. Ducks for Bucks: On Australia Day, Joshua Smith, Mackenzie Squires, Liam Oakes, Liam Drake, Harry Mellross, Ben Mellross, all gave up their time to help with the Branch's main fundraiser. These 6 walked around the entrance and sold over 100 tickets collectively. Their politeness and attitude was well documented. Over 100+ Patrol Hours Hayden Doyle Eli Wong Liam Drake Liam Oakes Zara Smithers Junior Lifesaver of the Year This year saw a four boys and two girls run against each other for the club's representative. Joshua Smith Hayden Doyle Liam Drake Eli Wong Mackenzie Squires Nicole Majask Performed and interview in front of a panel of three. Thanks to Alan Moffitt, Robyn Carr and Peter Lambeth for giving up their time to help listen to these enthusiastic rookies talk about themselves and the club. After a tough process the panel struggled to find a clear winner but we all agreed that a panel needs to be set up to get their ideas up and running in the future. In the end Hayden Doyle and Mackenzie Squires were selected. These two then did a couple of practice runs 19

before their branch interviews. On the Friday the 20th of January they gave their interview and performed a CPR exercise they then had to wait for the results which were presented at Junior Branch Championships At Branch we learnt that both performed very well and achieved very good results. The club was very luck to have Hayden Doyle win the Male Junior Lifesaver of the Year. This is the second year running Ocean Beach has had a winner. We wish Hayden all the best at state and congratulations to Mackenzie for a great effort. I wish the best of luck to all the U14's as you all move on into the senior ranks. Hope to see you all around the beach. Jason Smith 20
