Welcome to our U8 Nippers and their families, especially any new U8 s joining us for the first =me. Queenscliff SLSC is very proud to have been teaching kids about the beach and surf for over 30 years. We are a family Club, focussed primarily on the par=cipa=on aspect of surf lifesaving ac=vi=es, but we also provide an environment for compe==on with experienced coaches for nippers as they progress through the age groups Our Sunday nipper sessions are run under the supervision of experienced Club Members with Beach Managers and Safety Teams seong up ac=vi=es/courses for each age group, whilst Age Managers and Age Assistants lead our nippers in their designated ac=vi=es on the beach and in the water. The structure of our weekly sessions for our U8 s through U14 s nippers ensures we give enough =me to the par=cipa=on and educa=on components of surf lifesaving, plus importantly put into prac=ce those skills learnt in a compe==ve environment for those nippers wan=ng this challenge. We believe this ensures that your child, and also you as a parent, have a fantas=c experience on the beach and in the surf, ensuring that you remain Queenscliff Surf Club members for life. As this is your Club and as a member and a parent of nippers, we hope you join in the ac=vi=es and have fun each week with your child. We look for volunteers each weekend of nippers and throughout the season - it may be helping with an ac=vity on the beach, in the pool or surf, assis=ng on the BBQ, or perhaps lending a hand in the clothing shop. It is only a few hours every now and again and provides an avenue for you to meet other parents involved in the Club. We look forward to seeing you down at the beach for Queensie s 2016/17 Season! Cheers, Jason, Olivia & Chris U8 Age Managers

Age Managers this year for the U8 s are: Jason Boyd - Email: jasoneboyd@hotmail.com Olivia Hibbi0- Email: livs_h@hotmail.com Chris Jessop Email: christopherjessop1@gmail.com..with many Age Assistants in support. Communica9on our main communica=on tool is the Queensie Nippers app please see the next page for details on how to download it. During the season you will also be sent details of club and age group ac=vi=es via email, please ensure you read the informa=on when received. For any missed informa=on please visit the app or club website for updates or the club newsle`er which is sent every Wednesday. Note: you do not need to let us know if you cannot make a Sunday. Just make sure if you are there on a Sunday you sign your child on and off the nipper age group lists so we are aware of your child's par9cipa9on in the group. Please ensure that you are present on the beach, you cannot drop your child off and then leave as nippers is not a child minding service. If you would like to be an Age Assistant please speak to your Age Managers over the next few weekends as we are always looking for more volunteers. All helpers must be members of the Club and all members are required to complete a Working with Children applica=on. Many of our Age Managers con=nue on through the seasons with their same group and it is an advantage to complete Surf Lifesaving s Bronze Medallion. The Club will hold sessions for this course and many other appropriate training sessions for our volunteers. It is a great way to get involved and make Nippers a family ac=vity.

Queensie Nippers now has it s own App using the Team App placorm download it now to stay up to date with all the latest informa=on. Follow these steps: 1. Download Team App from the Apple of Google Play app store via the following links App Store: h`ps://itunes.apple.com/us/app/team-app-your-teamyour-app/id625607532 Google Play: h`ps://play.google.com/store/apps/details? id=com.teamapp.teamapp 2. Sign up to Team App. You will be sent an email to confirm your registra=on. 3. Log into the App and search for QUEENSIE NIPPERS. 4. Choose your applicable access group(s). 5. If you don t have a smartphone go to h`p://queensienippers.teamapp.com/ to sign up and view this App online.

First day of the 2016/17 season is Sunday 9 th October We start every Sunday at 8:45am by assembling into age groups and then going through any Club announcements. The first ac=vity gets underway at 9:00am when patrols officially start on the beach. Parking is quite difficult on the beach front and surrounding streets so we suggest you get to Queensie early or walk/ride if you live close by. We generally are finished by 10:30am depending on length of ac=vi=es. What to bring: Queenscliff cap Queenscliff swimmers High Vis Pink Rash singlet or vest Swimming googles Bo`le of water Sun cream (A MUST Slip, Slop, Slap ) Beach towel And a ripper Nipper aotude Post Nippers on Sundays there is a sausage sizzle where for a nominal fee you can pick up a tasty snag in bread with sauce, then wash it down with a selec=on of cold beverages. The BBQ is located on the top floor of the surf Club. It is a good way to support the Club to raise funds to buy further equipment.

Ac9vity based (each week) Pool & shore ac=vi=es Boards Flags Beach sprint & long run Fun games Surf Educa9on is taught throughout the season during Sunday sessions. The following slide gives an indica=on of the educa=on topics covered and the learning outcomes for U8 s, as guided by Surf Life Saving Australia. Note: you do not need to let us know if you cannot make a Sunday. Just make sure if you are there on a Sunday you sign your child on and off the nipper age group lists so we are aware of your child's par=cipa=on in the group.

Queensie Nippers What are we about? At Queensie Nippers we are proud to have been teaching kids about the beach and surf for over 30 years. Since 1924 Queenscliff has been a Club for families, run by you. We promote building our Nipper s skills to give them confidence and proficiency to enjoy the beach. We provide an environment for both compe==on and confidence building ac=vi=es. At Queensie Nippers we have an organised structure to run our programs and provide resources for you to u=lise and learn. During the season and on Sundays we encourage everyone to par=cipate, whether you are geong started in the surf as a Nipper, helping with water safety or on the beach as a parent and even running the BBQ to feed our hungry Nippers aser a Sunday session. Please ask how you can get involved if you are keen to help - even if it all seems to be daun=ng at first! Your par=cipa=on at any level helps for the smooth running of Nippers for everyone.

Nippers Code - As a Queensie Nipper I commit to: Par=cipa=ng in Nippers because I enjoy the sport To always follow the rules and respect the ocean and condi=ons Be a good sport and control my temper Respect the official s decisions Treat other nippers and compe=tors as I would like to be treated Aim to have fun and improve my ability Listen to my Age Manager, team and my Queensie mates Parent and Carer Code - As a Queensie Nipper Parent or Carer I commit to: Not making an unwilling child par=cipate in a sport Understanding that my Nipper is involved in sport for their enjoyment, not mine Encourage my Nipper to play by the rules Encourage that the effort is as important as the result Work towards improving skills and sportsmanship Recognise and encourage good play or efforts Not publicly ques=on an official s decision Recognise and respect the efforts of volunteers

Age Manager and Age Assistants Code - As an Age Manager or Age Assistant my role is to ensure: I have a commitment to the Club to a`end training sessions to build my knowledge on beach and water disciplines Nippers par=cipate for their enjoyment When Nippers par=cipate in compe==ons, sportsmanship is a priority I create an environment that is easy for parents to become involved I never ridicule or cri=cise Nippers about their performance I operate within the rules and spirit of the compe==on and teach my Nippers to do the same I ensure that the =me my Nippers spend with me is a posi=ve experience by encouraging and rewarding them equally I ensure that equipment and facili=es meet safety standards and are appropriate to the age and ability of my Nippers I ensure my nippers understand the rules and that they are in place for their safety I have a commitment to the Club to encourage and prepare Nippers for compe==on I am proud of Queensie and will encourage my Nippers to proudly represent the Club at all =mes

All Queensie Nippers must wear a pink high visibility vest or rashie whenever they are in the water or pool. Most Nippers wear their vests or rashies whether they are in the water or not, as pink really does stand out in a crowd! Kids Singlets (Age 6 to 14) $10.00 Adult Singlets (Size XS to 3XL) $12.00 Nipper Short Sleeved Rashie (Age 4 to 14) $25.00

Queenscliff SLSC provides training in beach and water disciplines by experienced and caring coaches. This training caters for all levels of experience for our U8 s through to U14 s. Visit the Club s app or website for training sessions: Water & Beach Training h`p://www.queensie.com/page/108/nipper-training---water-&-beach

Carnivals are a very important part of the season with U8 s through to U14 s eligible to enter carnivals. Entry is done via the Club s website with the Club paying the applicable entry fees. It is very important that if you register for a carnival that you a`end, otherwise the Club is out of pocket. If on the day you feel the condi=ons are not right for your confidence levels, come along and cheer on your team mates anyway! Please refer to the Club s website for carnival dates, programs of events for each carnival and the online entry form for each carnival - h`p://www.queensie.com/page/176/carnival-informa=on-&-entry. It is your responsibility to ensure entries are submi`ed for a carnival by the published cut off date to have your child s entry paid for by the Club. Some carnivals allow late entries on the day of the carnival but entry fee is the responsibility of the individual in those circumstances. The March Past is one of the great tradi=ons of surf lifesaving and at each carnival every Club must have a March Past team. It is always a proud moment when the Queenscliff team marches in at every carnival, following behind the band in perfect step. We will need volunteers this season so if this interests you please let your Age Manager know. Who can compete? U8 - U14s are the only age groups allowed to compete at carnivals. Anyone who has completed their par=cipa=on proficiency evalua=on can compete and for U8 s this includes a: 25m swim any stroke 1 minute survival float Proficiency tes=ng is being conducted at Queensie Ocean Pool on the following dates: Sunday 9 th October, during nippers Sunday 16 th October, during nippers

Where are carnivals held? Carnivals are mainly held on the Northern Beaches with Branch Championships at a loca=on TBA and State Championships being held at Swansea Belmont this season. Carnivals are held in the Sydney Branch also and keen compe=tors may choose to a`end these if there is no event on in our branch. There are also a few series style events that Queenscliff like to be involved with. The main one is the Sydney Water Series which is held in the Illawarra branch. How long do carnivals go for? Carnivals are usually held over one day. Most carnivals marshal at approx. 7.45am, with a Club warm up being held at 7am. Most carnivals involve long hours so be prepared to be at the beach most of the day. Entry to carnivals is via the applicable online form on the Club s website - h`p://www.queensie.com/page/176/carnival-informa=on-&-entry. It costs the Club $20 per nipper to enter into a carnival and we do not get a refund if you don't compete. What to bring? There are Queenscliff tents that we provide for our members and we ask parents to bring their own umbrella/tent/ chair and sit nearby. You will require plenty of water and food to last the day, high visibility vest, sun cream, nipper cap, Club costume, goggles, swim cap and warm clothes if the weather/wind turns. Club crab Queenscliff has a variety of fibreglass and foamie boards that members can use at carnivals. These cras will be transported to the carnival via our board trailer, and the boards will be taken to the beach near the tent. You are required to bring back any cras used to the tent immediately aser your race.

How can parents help? The Club needs to supply one official and one water safety officer for every nipper entered, e.g. 70 nippers entered, 7 officials and 7 water safety officers if you would like to become an official or water safety officer please speak to your Age Manager. What events are available? There are both beach - sprints and flags - and water boards, swims, wade - events for individuals and for teams. Check the carnival program to see what events are on offer. Team Selec9ons Queenscliff also compete in a number of team events at carnivals during the season. These team events include: Beach Relay All Age Beach Relay Swim Relay Board Relay Board Rescue Cameron Relay All Age Board Relay Selec=on into these teams is made by the Age Group Managers, Club Coaches and both the Senior and Junior Compe==on Managers and is based on performance, with the ul=mate decision lying with the Junior Compe==on Manager. All Team Selec=ons are posted on the Club s website prior to each carnival, with reserves noted where applicable.

The Club only func=ons because our members volunteer this includes for the Uniform Shop and BBQ each Sunday. With enough volunteers from each age group you will only need to help out once or twice throughout the season for a couple of hours at a =me. It is a good way to meet other U8 parents! Please see the roster to the right with highlighted dates when U8 s are required on the BBQ or in the Uniform Shop. Note when carnivals (other than our own) are on, Nippers con=nues at Queenscliff for those not a`ending the carnival, so the Uniform Shop and BBQ are opera=onal.
