Sounders FC are in first place in the Western Conference with 23 points from 12 matches. LAST MATCH The game's lone goal came after just five minutes. Gaining possession after a fortuitous deflection off of a Colorado defender, Marco Pappa set himself up with a touch then struck a right-footed curler from just outside the Colorado penalty area that sailed inside Rapids 'keeper Clint Irwin's left-hand post. Sounders FC goalkeeper Stefan Frei was called upon to make just one save, from a long-distance attempt from Colorado's Kevin Doyle late in the first half. Sounders FC head coach Sigi Schmid made five changes to the team that gained a scoreless draw with Sporting Kansas City at CenturyLink Field. Zach Scott and Leo Gonzalez came into the back four for Chad Marshall and Dylan Remick, Cristian Roldan and Andy Rose came into the midfield for Lamar Neagle and Gonzalo Pineda, and Obafemi Martins started up top in place of Chad Barrett. SEATTLE SOUNDERS FC (4-4-2): Stefan Frei - Tyrone Mears, Brad Evans, Zach Scott, Leo Gonzalez - Cristian Roldan (Chad Barrett 70), Osvaldo Alonso, Andy Rose, Marco Pappa (Lamar Neagle 74) - Clint Dempsey (Micheal Azira 89), Obafemi Martins. TEAM NEWS Sounders FC extended their undefeated streak to three matches and their home undefeated run to four games with the win against Colorado. With the three points, Sounders FC also took over leadership of the Western Conference and the Supporters Shield race atop the MLS overall table. We talked before the game about the fact that if we win this game today we go to the top of the table, Sounders FC head coach Sigi Schmid said. We have the most points per game, we ll be one of the top scoring MLS GAME INFORMATION

teams in the league. If we get a shutout, we ll be the top defensive team in the league -- 12 games in, those are pretty good benchmarks. Marco Pappa scored his first goal of the season, his first since the final game of the 2014 season when he netted both goals in a 2-0 win against the LA Galaxy in Seattle. Obafemi Martins made his first start in three matches, since May 9, overcoming a leg injury to play the full 90 minutes in the attack. Leo Gonzalez made his first start since March 28, coming in at left back, while Zach Scott made his first start since April 26 in central defense. Andy Rose returned to the starting lineup after coming off the substitutes bench in each of the previous two games, with Gonzalo Pineda sidelined with an ankle injury. Rookie Cristian Roldan made his first start since April 12, coming into a wide midfield role and playing 70 minutes. It s not just veterans that are coming in, goalkeeper Stefan Frei said. It s young guys that are coming in and doing well right away. This is another game where we proved we have that depth. In this industry you don t get too many opportunities, so you have to prove yourself when you do get your chance. I m stoked for everybody that got to see the pitch today and how they performed. Said center back Brad Evans: It felt like we were in control. From that end, as long as we kept the ball, we kept them at bay, I think. For us on the field, we were comfortable. They had a few chances, but they were pretty routine for [Frei]. NEW YORK RED BULLS The New York Red Bulls saw their brief two-game undefeated run come to an end, falling 2-0 to Philadelphia Union on Sunday afternoon at PPL Park. The Red Bulls are in third place in the Eastern Conference with 17 points from 11 matches. LAST MATCH Union took the lead in the 57th minute. Good passing interplay left midfielder Cristian Maidana with time and space at the top of the area. Maidana sent a low effort toward goal that was redirected by a backheel from Vincent Nogueira s right in front of goal which put the ball past a helpless Luis Robles in the Red Bulls goal. The lead was doubled just five minutes later. Claiming a turnover at midfield, Union fullback Fabinho raced down the left wing before sending a centering pass to a wide-open C.J. Sapong, who tapped in from close range. Red Bulls head coach Jesse Marsch made one change to the team that reached a scoreless draw with FC Dallas at Toyota Stadium. Roy Miller came into the back four for Damien Perrinelle. NEW YORK RED BULLS (4-2-3-1): Luis Robles - Chris Duvall, Karl Ouimette, Roy Miller (Anatole Abang 81), Kemar Lawrence (Connor Lade 30) - Dax McCarty (Dane Richards 67), Felipe Martins - Lloyd Sam, Sacha Kljestan, Mike Grella - Bradley Wright-Phillips. TEAM NEWS The Red Bulls have been shut out at the attacking end just twice this season both in the last two matches, following the loss to Philadelphia. It was Union s first win ever at Red Bull Arena. We were pushing the game in the first half and [were] a little bit unlucky not to get a goal, Red Bulls head coach Jesse Marsch said. We also knew that they were solely trying to sit back and clog things up and win a ball and counter. In the end, we weren t good enough at what we do and we weren t able to be sharp enough around the goal. Obviously I think if we get the lead, it s a very different game. Said Sacha Kljestan: I m not that concerned about it. We hit the post twice on a couple of good plays in the first half. On another night, maybe it goes in. We weren t sharp enough in the final third tonight. We need to get that going. With Damien Perrinelle sidelined through injury, Roy Miller made his first start since April 29, coming in at center back. His only two starts this season had both been at left back. Connor Lade made his first appearance since May 2 when he started in his only previous league outing this season coming on at the half-hour for Kemar Lawrence. When you see a lot of the ball and the shots don t necessarily go in, we just can t get frustrated, Lade said. We know we ve got quality up front and our attacking half of the field is one of the best in MLS so we know that the goals are going to come. We just have to be confident that if we can keep playing the way that we are and stay good defensively that those goals will come. Dane Richards came off the substitutes bench for the ninth time in the last 10 matches, coming on for the final quarter of the contest. The Red Bulls have scored five goals in their last six games, after netting nine goals in their first five games. They saw their scoreless streak extended to 218 minutes in the loss to Philadelphia. It d be hard to be too critical, other than purely results, with what we ve done. To get overly concerned with the results at this point would be a mistake, Marsch said. I don t think there s any need to change what we re MLS GAME INFORMATION

doing based on the fact that if you look at the overall impact that we have on every game, it s pretty strong, it s a pretty strong grasp, Marsch continued. It s just a matter of turning that grasp into more goals and more wins. MLS GAME INFORMATION

SEATTLE SOUNDERS FC vs. NEW YORK RED BULLS MAY 31, 2015-2:00 P.M. PT SOUNDERS FC WEEKLY NOTES TOP OF THE TABLE Sounders FC is back on top of the MLS table following Wednesday s win over the Colorado Rapids, marking the first time the club has sat alone atop the standings this season. The Rave Green are now 5-1-1 in their last seven games, including four clean-sheets, and lead MLS with seven wins, 23 points and 1.92 points per match. The club s plus-nine goal differential is also first in MLS, six goals ahead of second place. Seattle has been very productive and efficient offensively, ranking tied for first in MLS with 18 goals and third with 59 shots on goal, but just 17th with 126 shots taken. Defensively, the club leads MLS with a 0.75 goals against average and seven shutouts. HE S A KEEPER After posting his third consecutive shutout in Wednesday s 1-0 win over the Colorado Rapids, goalkeeper Stefan Frei moved into first place in MLS with seven clean-sheets on the year, just two shy of his career high set last season. Frei is the only keeper in MLS to earn a shutout in over half of his team s fixtures in 2015. Additionally, the Swiss shot-stopper ranks first in MLS in goals against average (0.75), saves (48), wins (six) and saves percentage (84.2). Frei appeared in every minute of the 2014 regular season, starting in goal for all 90 minutes in each of the 34 matches. Thus far, Frei joins defender Brad Evans as the only players in the club to play the full 1,080 minutes of the 2015 campaign. S2 ADvANCES TO USOC FOURTH ROUND Seattle Sounders FC 2 came away with a 2-1 win over Portland Timbers 2 in the Third Round of the Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup, giving the USL side four consecutive wins across all competitions. Ezra Hendrickson s squad has now won all three of its meetings this season with T2, including a 2-0 win in USL play in Portland last Friday. With Wednesday s win, S2 is the lone MLS-owned USL side to advance to the Fourth Round of the Open Cup, and is facing a challenge at MLS side Real Salt Lake on June 16 at Rio Tinto Stadium. The Sounders FC First Team enters the tournament in the Fourth Round with the rest of the MLS clubs, facing the Portland Timbers on June 16 at Starfire Stadium. BY THE NUMBERS 3: Consecutive shutouts for Sounders FC, the most in MLS this season. 7: Seattle wins in 2015, the most in MLS. 9: Sounders FC goal differential this season, the most in MLS. The next highest is a plus-three differential, held by three teams. SoundersFC.com/Media HOME, SWEET HOME Sunday s match against the New York Red Bulls marks the end of a stretch of three matches in nine days for Sounders FC. The club played to a scorless draw with Sporting Kansas City last Saturday and took a 1-0 win over the Colorado Rapids on Wednesday. This marks the first time in club history that the club has played three matches at CenturyLink Field in a span of nine days. Since 2009, Sounders FC is 18-3-5 during three-game homestands at CenturyLink Field (including this past week s results). Additionally, Seattle is 17-3-8 in stretches with three league matches in nine days or fewer. Another three-match homestretch is on the horizon next month for the Rave Green. The club faces FC Dallas in MLS action on June 13, then hosts the Portland Timbers in the Fourth Round of the Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup on June 16 at Starfire Stadium before returning to MLS play on June 20 with a home fixture against the San Jose Earthquakes. ON THE BALL Sounders FC s possession-oriented attack attempted 425 passes in the first half against Colorado on Wednesday, the highest total recorded in a half by an MLS side since Opta began keeping the stat five years ago. The club finished the 1-0 win with 667 passes to Colorado s 290, and held 68.6 percent of the possession. Seattle s 667 passes Wednesday are the second-highest recorded total in club history, falling just behind the 716 passes attempted in last Saturday s 0-0 draw with Sporting Kansas City. Pair those two matches with the 637 passes attempted in a 2-0 win at Vancouver on May 16, and Seattle has put together a three-match run with a combined 2,035 passes. THROWBACK: 03/19/2009 A fervent crowd of 32,000-plus made its way to CenturyLink Field to watch the debut of Major League Soccer in the Emerald City, with Sounders FC winning 3-0 over the New York Red Bulls in the club s inagural MLS match. Fredy Montero scored the club s first-ever goal in the 11th minute when Sebastien Le Toux took a pass from Osvaldo Alonso, turned it toward the middle and crossed it to Montero on the right side of the penalty box. He gathered the ball with one touch and blasted it into the left side of the net for the 1-0 lead. In the 25th minute, Montero drew the RBNY defense and led a pass to Brad Evans behind the defense. He slipped a shot past goalkeeper Danny Cepero to make it 2-0. Montero added his second goal in the 75th minute, picking off a ball cleanly in New York s defensive third carrying it into the penalty box, where he juked Cepero to the ground and knocked the ball in for the final 3-0 tally. Kasey Keller s clean sheet was the first of three shutouts for the Rave Green to open the 2009 season. In addition to Evans and Alonso, one other current Sounder Zach Scott appeared in the inaugural match. 4
