Dear Friends, On behalf of the K-State Livestock Sales Management class and the Department of Animal Sciences and Industry, welcome to the 40th Annual Bull & Female Sale! We are excited about this year s offering and feel it is our best to date. Plan to join us as we celebrate 40 years of commitment to students and beef producers. This year marks a milestone in our history and provides a great opportunity to look back at the impact the program has had over time. Prior to the Legacy Sale, we ll also have the opportunity to look forward and imagine a new future with the dedication of a new Purebred Unit headquarters and development center at 3 p.m. We hope you will join us in Manhattan on Friday, March 3. For four decades, our commitment to our customers has been to provide cattle that are profitable in a variety of situations. This year s offering was designed with that commitment in mind. Utilizing the latest technology, we have sought to build cattle that perform in a wide range of management and environmental conditions. Look through the long list of calving ease bulls for use on heifers in all three breeds. Find the bulls in the upper percentiles in carcass traits to hit premium targets, and the high growth bulls that produce more pay-weight at weaning. Look for your next elite show heifer prospect or breeding piece to strengthen your herd. These females will not disappoint. They were selected from the heart of the herd, and we are confident they will do as good of a job for you as they have for us. As a department, we take great pride in our university, our cattle, and especially our students. We encourage you to get to know this group of future beef industry leaders as you browse the pens on sale day. Thanks for taking the time to look through this catalog. We strive for customer satisfaction before and after the sale and we are confident that we can help you find cattle that will add profit to your operation. Feel free to contact us or stop by at any time. We d be happy to talk through your breeding program and advise you on how our sale offering could bring value and profit to your operation. We look forward to seeing you March 3. Sincerely, Kenneth Odde David Nichols Robert Weaber Tyler Leonhard FIND US ON SALE DAY Dr. Ken Odde Dr. Dave Nichols Dr. Bob Weaber Tyler Leonhard

GENERAL INFORMATION LIABILITY All persons who attend the sale do so at their own risk. Neither the sale management, Kansas State University, nor any person connected with the sale assumes any liability, legal or otherwise, for accidents or loss of property. SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS Kansas State University is committed to making its services, activities, and programs accessible to all participants. If you have special requirements due to a physical, vision, or hearing disability, contact Tyler Leonhard, 785-565- 1881, or Scott Jones, Director of Institutional Equity, Title IX Coordinator, Kansas State University, (TTY) 785-532-4807 INDIVIDUAL ANIMAL INFORMATION All performance information in this catalog is correct to the best of our knowledge. Data was taken from the respective breed associations in January 2017. All measures taken are adjusted by age according to each individual breed association. Performance data followed by an asterisk (*) denotes the weight or measure is actual and is not adjusted for age. Updated performance, breeding, ultrasound and DNA information may be made available in the form of a supplement sheet on the Internet and on sale day. All cattle in the sale that trace to carrier animals have been tested free of Idiopathic Epilepsy (IE), Hypotrichosis (HY), Arthrogryposis Multiplex (AM), Neuropathic Hydrocephalus (NH), and Contractural Arachnodactyly (CA). Expected Progeny Difference (EPD), is the prediction of how future progeny of each animal are expected to perform relative to the progeny of other animals listed in the database. EPDs are expressed in units of measure for the trait, plus or minus. EPDs are the best overall prediction of differences in progeny performance and are useful tools that aid in selection; however, EPDs DO NOT PREDICT an actual level of performance. For example, a bull with a birth weight EPD of +3.0 should sire calves approximately two pounds heavier than a bull with a birth weight EPD of +1.0. The actual weight of the calf will depend upon environmental factors. EPDs can be used to compare cattle within a breed but CANNOT be used to compare cattle of different breeds. EXPLANATION OF COMMON EPDS Calving Ease Direct (CED) is expressed as a difference in percentage of unassisted births, with a higher value indicating greater calving ease in firstcalf heifers. Birth Weight EPD (BW), expressed in pounds, is a predictor of a sire s ability to transmit birth weight to his progeny. Weaning Weight EPD (WW), expressed in pounds, is a predictor of a sire s ability to transmit weaning growth to his progeny. Yearling Weight EPD (YW), expressed in pounds, is a predictor of a sire s ability to transmit yearling growth to his progeny. Scrotal Circumference EPD (SC), expressed in centimeters, is a predictor of a sire s ability to transmit scrotal size to his progeny. Calving Ease Maternal (CEM) is expressed as a difference in percentage of unassisted births, with a higher value indicating greater calving ease in first-calf daughters. Maternal Milk EPD (Milk) is a predictor of a sire s genetic merit for milk and mothering ability as expressed in his daughters. Intramuscular Fat EPD (%IMF) is a predictor of the difference in a sire s progeny for percent intramuscular fat in the ribeye muscle. Ribeye Area EPD (REA or RE) is a predictor of the difference in square inches of ultrasound ribeye area of a sire s progeny. Fat Thickness EPD (FAT), expressed in inches, is a predictor of the difference in ultrasound fat thickness at the 12th rib of a sire s progeny. ANGUS $VALUE INDEXES $Value indexes are multi-trait selection indexes to assist beef producers by adding simplicity to genetic selection decisions. $Values are reported in dollars per head, where a higher value is more favorable. The $Value is an estimate of how future progeny of each sire are expected to perform, on average, compared to progeny of other sires in the database if the sires were randomly mated to cows and if calves were exposed to the same environment. Cow Energy Value ($EN), expressed in dollars savings per cow per year, assesses differences in cow energy requirements as an expected dollar savings difference in daughters of sires. A larger value is more favorable when comparing two animals (more dollars saved on feed energy expenses). Weaned Calf Value ($W), expressed in dollars per head, is the expected average difference in future progeny performance for pre-weaning merit. $W includes both revenue and cost adjustments associated with differences in birth weight, weaning direct growth, maternal milk and mature cow size. Feedlot Value ($F), expressed in dollars per head, is the expected average difference in future progeny performance for post-weaning merit compared to progeny of other sires. Grid Value ($G), expressed in dollars per head, is the expected average difference in future progeny performance for carcass grid merit compared to progeny of other sires. It may be the best carcass decision tool for focusing on quality and red meat yield simultaneously. Beef Value ($B), expressed in dollars per head, is the expected average difference in future progeny performance for post-weaning and carcass value compared to progeny of other sires. HEREFORD $VALUE INDEXES Baldy Maternal Index (BMI$), used for selecting Hereford bulls to use on Angus-cross cows and heifers, when replacement heifers will be raised. Retained ownership of steers and cull heifers through the feedlot phase is assumed, with fed cattle marketed on a Certified Hereford Beef (CHB) program grid. Calving EZ Index (CEZ$), used for selecting Hereford bulls for use on yearling heifers only. This index has increased emphasis on direct and maternal calving ease compared with the other indexes. Brahman Influenced Index (BII$), is similar to BMI$, except Hereford bulls are used in a rotational crossbreeding system with Brahman, rather than Angus. Certified Hereford Beef Index (CHB$), a terminal sire index, when Hereford bulls are mated to British-cross cows, and all offspring are sold as fed cattle on a CHB grid. The Legacy Sale asi.ksu.edu/bullsale 3

GENERAL INFORMATION SIMMENTAL EPDS AND $VALUE INDEXES Stayability is expressed as the probability that an animal s daughters will remain in production to at least six years of age when compared to the daughters of another animal. Expressed as deviations from a 50% probability, a higher value indicates increased stayability. All-Purpose Index (API) evaluates sires being bred to both first calf heifers and mature cows with a portion of their daughters being retained for breeding and the cull heifers and steers are fed out. This index includes both production models and maternal values to form an all-inclusive selection tool. Terminal Index (TI) designed for evaluating sires economic merit in situations where they are bred to mature cows and all offspring go to the feedlot. Consequently, maternal traits such as maternal calving ease, maternal weaning weight and female fertility are not considered in the index. We also know that there are a variety of traits that contribute to profit of beef producers. Those traits of economic importance also vary depending on your market end-point and breeding system. It is this breadth of need that motivates us to collect a wide range of phenotypic data including calving ease scores, birth weights, weaning weights, yearling weights and a full suite of ultrasound carcass traits. We know that for traditionally measured calving ease, growth and carcass traits, an animal s own record provides an early insight into their genetic potential. Moving forward, we will offer extensive feed intake and efficiency data on our offering. That information is even more valuable when it is collected from properly managed contemporary groups with significant size. Our job as a seedstock producer is to collect accurate and reliable information to inform selection tools like EPDs and indexes, providing you with the information you need to make a sound purchase decision. As you review the offering in the 40th Legacy Sale, please note that many animals will be genotyped by sale time. Genomic information will be combined with the animals performance-based EPD to produce genomically enhancedexpected progeny differences (GE-EPDs). The GE-EPDs will be available in the supplemental sale sheet posted to our website and available sale day for review. Providing additional information regarding an animal s genetic merit via genomics provides a substantial improvement in EPD accuracy for young animals for conventional growth and carcass traits. Improvements in the accuracy of EPD for traits like heifer pregnancy, stayability, calving ease and maternal traits where non-parents won t have a performance record, may prove to be of even higher value. After all, the decisions that seedstock producers make that result in yearling bulls available for purchase by commercial producers creates all the genetic change in the entire beef value chain. Improving the accuracy of that decision point is expected to have significant impact and value. Current DNA genotyping yields increases in EPD accuracy equivalent to the animal having approximately 10 to 30 progeny with data recorded. With our use of genomic tools, commercial producers can purchase bulls with EPD accuracies roughly equal to those of bulls that have had all the available traits recorded for their first calf crop. Know that you can buy with confidence at the Legacy Sale. Every effort is made to document the genetic merit of our sale bulls and heifers through extensive performance testing and data recording for calving ease, birth weight, weaning weight, post weaning gain, ultrasound predictors of carcass merit and now genomic testing. Our dedication to performance testing and adoption of genomic tools assures you, our customer, the most accurate, science-based genetic predictions available in the marketplace today. 4 The Legacy Sale asi.ksu.edu/bullsale

PUREBRED UNIT HISTORY Kansas State University s purebred beef herd was established in 1881 with the purchase of an Aberdeen-Angus heifer, Eyebright 4th 7131 (7446), from the Ontario Agricultural College. A Hereford bull and heifer Parley 30782 and Miss Beau Real 7th 30781 were purchased from George Fowler, Maple Hill, Kansas, in 1888. These two breeds made up the herd until it was disposed in 1897 due to tuberculin test reactions and an order from the Board of Regents. The Board s order was the result of concern across the state that K-State s cattle should be practical farmer s livestock instead of purebred animals. The herd was then reestablished in 1901 with seven different breeds of beef, dairy and dual-purpose cattle. PUREBRED BEEF UNIT The Purebred Beef Unit annually runs nearly 300 breeding-age purebred Angus, Hereford and Simmental cows on 4,000 acres of native bluestem grass. The main headquarters is located in Manhattan at the edge of campus north of Denison and Kimball Avenue. This location houses bull testing facilities, heifer development yard, show barn and office. Mature females are maintained northeast of town about 10 miles at the esteemed Cedar Creek Ranch headquarters. This ranch, located just off Highway 13, serves an instrumental role in the teaching aspect of our operation. Here, students have the opportunity to participate in real-world scenarios of beef production and pasture management. MISSION AND PURPOSE Our mission is to provide undergraduate students with practical experience in breeding, feeding, management and marketing of purebred seedstock as well as give livestock selection, general animal science courses and students from colleges across the nation the opportunity to evaluate quality cattle. Each year hundreds of students utilize cattle raised at this unit. The herd also provides an opportunity to demonstrate breeding programs for genetic improvement of seedstock, using tools like performance testing, artificial insemination, embryo transfer and ultrasound carcass evaluation. Applied research trials are conducted using cattle produced in this herd, such as synchronized artificial insemination, feed efficiency and feed additive research. Cattle are also employed for teaching purposes in classes such as Livestock Sales Management, Pregnancy Diagnosis, Bovine Calving, Livestock and Meat Evaluation, and used for competition in the annual Little American Royal. A portion of the cattle produced in this herd are merchandized in the annual Legacy Bull and Female Sale held the first Friday in March. This sale is unique to the nation because it is engineered entirely by students to give them hands-on, practical experience in purebred cattle marketing. PRODUCTION SALES In 2017, we are celebrating the 40th Bull and Female Sale here at K-State. The success of the sale all started with the first Special K production sale hosted in 1977. This first sale was unique to the nation because it was a university sale organized and managed by students. A sale has been held each school year since 1977. Early sales rotated between Angus, Simmental and Hereford cattle and included females. In 1987, it was decided to sell all breeds in one annual bull sale. K-State s most distinguished animal was the Angus heifer Manhattan Gal. Her national reputation was the momentum behind the first Special K Edition sale. Manhattan Gal was the Supreme Champion Individual at the 1976 Angus Futurity, and the Grand Champion Angus Female at the American Royal, North American International Livestock Exposition and the National Western Stock Show. The highest selling individual in a Special K sale was Slammer K 04147, a Hereford bull. He was purchased in 1981 by C K Hereford Ranch, Brookville, Kansas, for $12,500. In 2011, a Hereford bull, KSU Revolution 021, commanded $11,100 and went to K-State alums Austin and Emilie Fink of Wamego, KS, and Mike and Shelia Miller of Womelsdorf, PA. K-State s highest selling female to date was Miss Kansas K 3G, a Simmental donor cow sold at the National Western Stock Show for $16,500. In 2008, the name of the K-State production sale was changed to the Legacy sale to honor 127 years of continuous beef improvement. The K-State Purebred Beef Teaching Unit might be the most unique experience offered to current and potential students in agricultural colleges across the nation. The educational opportunities available to students producing, promoting and merchandising high-quality purebred cattle continues to play a fundamental role in a program that has been nationally recognized for excellence in teaching as well as contributing to the outstanding alumni support received by the Kansas State Department of Animal Sciences and Industry. ANGUS REFERENCE SIRES OUR ANGUS PROGRAM... Calving ease is a core trait of the Angus breed and we have been selecting for superior calving ease for generations. The K-State Angus breeding program takes calving ease genetics to new heights by adding extra performance, carcass merit and puts it in a stylish phenotypic package. Our Angus cows are managed on real-world Flint Hills tall grass prairie. We don t pamper our cows because we know our customers won t either. We continually select top genetics for use in our extensive embryo transfer and AI programs that complement the fertility and adaptability of our historic cow herd. Going forward, we will add extensive evaluation of feed intake and feed efficiency as the new Purebred Beef Unit s Bull and Heifer Development Center comes online. The Insentec technology being installed in the new center will enable collection of individual feed intake records on all the bull and heifer selection candidates. We continue to evaluate and add technologies to our selection program that are proven to aid in finding the best genetic combinations. ANGUS REFERENCE SIRES Minimize dystocia by using calving ease EPDs to select service sires for heifers by Bob Weaber, Associate Professor and Cow-calf Extension Specialist When one begins the process of selecting bulls to produce replacement heifers or bulls to be service sires used on replacement heifers, a number of criteria come to mind. Certainly among these are breed composition and the contribution the bull may provide to direct and/or maternal heterosis, as well as a variety of growth, maternal and carcass traits. Perhaps among the most important is calving ease. In the case of replacement heifers, we need to think of calving ease as both a trait of a calf (how easy it is born or direct calving ease) as well as a trait of the cow (how easy the cow gives birth or maternal calving ease). There is a genetic component to both the direct and maternal aspects of the calving ease trait. As such, producers should be aware of when to use which measure to aid in the production of high quality replacement females with the expectation of long productive lives as well as to minimize dystocia in first calf heifers. Producers should use calving ease (CE) EPDs rather than birth weight (BW) EPDs to control dystocia rates in heifers and cows. For cow-calf producers, calving ease is the economically relevant trait associated with dystocia. Economically relevant traits (ERTs) are those that directly generate revenue or incur costs in beef production systems. For a commercial cow-calf producer, dystocia is what generates costs in a cow herd through direct losses of calves and their dams, increased labor costs, and certainly lower reproductive rates among cows that have experienced dystocia. Birth weight is an indicator trait and only accounts for 55 to 60 percent of the genetic variation in calving ease. So, selection for reduced birth weight alone won t improve calving ease as much as selecting directly on calving ease. It s important to recognize that there is an optimal range of birth weights in beef cattle. Certainly, too heavy of a calf is a problem during delivery of the calf. However, too small of a calf at birth is problematic as well. During severe cold stress, low body weight calves are more susceptible to hypothermia and subsequent death or disease issues. If you are using artificial insemination, select bulls with high accuracy calving ease EPDs to further minimize risk of dystocia events. The selection focus for service sires to be mated to virgin heifers to produce their first calf should be the identification of high CE EPD (calving ease direct [CED] in some breeds) bulls. In this scenario, selection for high CE helps increase the percentage of calves born without assistance to first calf heifers. ANGUS BULLS A has a CE EPD of +12 and Bull B has a CE EPD of +2, we d expect Bull A s calves to have 10% more unassisted births. Maternal Calving Ease EPD describes the difference in the expected rate of dystocia among sire groups of daughters. For instance, if Bull C has a MCE EPD of +10 and Bull D has a MCE EPD of -2, we d expect Bull C s daughters to have 12% more unassisted calvings (i.e. fewer dystocia events) compared to daughters of Bull D when these daughters are mated to service sires of similar genetic merit for calving ease and birth weight. Remember, MCE is calving ease viewed as the ability of a sires daughters to calve unassisted. Typically, MCE has a negative genetic association with CE and a positive genetic relationship with growth and mature size. So it s important that producers don t just select for higher levels of calving ease in their herd as that will have a tendency to decrease the maternal calving ease genetic potential in the cow herd. Recommendations for MCE EPD minimums for sires to be used to produce replacement heifers and CED EPD minimums for heifer service sires are in Table 1. Producers may adjust this recommendation up based on individual needs that reflect herd based experience in dystocia rates in first calf heifers. Combining the use of CE and MCE EPDs in your selection system will help assure a successful calving season and decreased dystocia in your first calf heifers. 28 KSU KONZA 6113 Reg #: 18671911 DOB: 01/15/2016 Tattoo: 6113 Table 1. SIMMENTAL REFERENCE SIRES OUR SIMMENTAL PROGRAM... Simmental has a long history in the Manhattan area, at the department s Kansas Artificial Breeder Service Unit (KABSU) and the Purebred Beef Unit. We re proud to have had a role in that history. We select to produce Simmental genetics with outstanding index values and added phenotype. Excellence in Simmental s API (All Purpose Index) is driven through exceptional balance and strength in stayability, calving ease, growth and end-product merit. In a planned crossbreeding system, Simmentals provide added carcass yield, growth and maternal strength. Select bulls for use on Angus-based or British-crossbred cows using API to produce great feeder cattle and replacement females. Use the Terminal Index (TI) to select bulls exclusively for feeder and fed cattle. TI will put an added punch in growth and carcass in the progeny. Our SimAngus bulls offer a unique balance of heterosis, maternal function and end-product merit to construct a simple yet effective crossbreeding system that makes feeder cattle that are in high demand. We take efficiency seriously and look to a great future using the best of Simmental influenced genetics and our own testing facility to add even more value to our customer s calves. Getting the most out of your bull purchases by Bob Weaber, Associate Professor and Cow-calf Extension Specialist Commercial cattlemen should do their homework to help ensure the bull(s) they purchase this year meet their needs. Like most things in life, preparedness is the key to making an informed decision or in this case, an informed purchase. Remember, bull selection accounts for more than 75% of the gene flow in your herd in just two generations. Take the time to do the $500/hour work in bull selection and let some of the $5/hour work wait until after bull purchases are made. Before you crack open the sale catalogs of seedstock suppliers, there are a few resources and skills you should possess. First, make sure you understand the use of Expected Progeny Differences (EPD) and selection indexes. While EPDs are not the only selection information you should consider, EPDs are the most effective tools available to describe the genetic differences between animals within and across herds. EPDs are much more effective genetic predictors than actual or adjusted performance records. If an EPD is available for a trait it should be used instead of an animal s own performance record for that trait. The EPD removes age and environmental effects that can bias a decision based on actual or adjusted performance records. Use Calving Ease (CE or CED) EPD, rather than birth weight (BW) EPD, if it s available, to select bulls that minimize calving difficulty. CE EPD calculations include BW data and other sources of information that affect dystocia. Second, make sure you know what traits you would like to improve on in your herd. What breed(s) fit in your mating system? If you are using a crossbreeding system, make sure the breed you selected fits your objectives. Other factors to consider are: keeping replacement heifers and endpoints for progeny marketing (weaning, back-grounded or in the beef). Assessment of these factors will help point you to the best breed for your needs and the combinations of maternal/growth/carcass traits that best fit your operation and environment. Be sure to apply selection to traits that have direct economic importance in your production system. Selection indexes can be very useful tools to point you to the best overall candidates across a range of traits important to profit. Make sure the index you employ matches your production and marketing scenarios. Third, set a realistic budget for bull purchases. Like most things in life, price is driven by quality. Evaluation of a seedstock supplier s prior year sale averages will give you an idea of what to expect in terms of purchase costs. A good rule of thumb is that a quality seedstock bull costs roughly the same as the value of 4-5 feeder steers in the current market. The purchase cost highlights the importance of making a well thought out decision. Fourth, and maybe the most important, make sure we get to know you. As your seedstock supplier, it s important we know your operational goals. We can provide recommendations from our sale offering that help attain those goals. Once you receive our sale catalog, make a short list of bulls (roughly three times more than you actually need to purchase) that fit your specifications. Arrive at the sale site early to inspect the bulls on your short list. Shorten this list of candidates based on conformation and updated data to identify your purchase candidates. Keep the sale order in mind. Stay focused on the bulls you selected earlier. Sticking to your plan will avoid impulse purchases. Your success is our success. We d like nothing more than to help you make a sound genetic investment! Fifth, after the sale bull care is very important and often overlooked. The longevity of your bull purchase and ultimately the return on your genetic investment is dependant on the number of calves your new bull produces in your herd. As a rule of thumb, young sires should be exposed to the number of females equal to his months of age. For example, a 14-month-old bull should be turned out with 14 cows/heifers for not more than 60 days. Make sure that you provide adequate rest between breeding seasons if using spring and fall. Once you pull a yearling bull from the breeding herd, make sure he has adequate nutrition. Remember he s still growing until he s 4-5 years old. During periods of limited forage, he should be supplemented with adequate high quality hay and a protein supplement. Make protein available to ensure the best use of dormant forages. Bulls should be in body condition 5.5-6 at turnout. Don t forget to provide salt and mineral free choice, to control flies and parasites as needed, and annual vaccinations for blackleg, respiratory and venereal diseases. An annual breeding soundness exam is recommended prior to turn out. We look forward to visiting with you before the sale and the opportunity to earn your business. We are here after the sale, too, and can provide expert advice in the management of your herd. The Legacy Sale asi.ksu.edu/bullsale 25

RANCH PERFORMANCE HORSES I am thrilled to be able to offer, at the 2017 Legacy Sale, such a talented group of horses which are all very unique! Each one has surprised me in how naturally talented they are and the amount they have each taught me in the one to two years I have been working with them. I hope each one of them finds a loving home in which their new owner appreciates their skills and ranch-work foundation as much as I have. Their preparation for this sale has only been possible because of the hundreds of hours of hard work my student workers have assisted me with at the Horse Unit. A big thank you to Colin, Katie and Bailey as well as our sponsors for all your outstanding help and support! Please enjoy our catalog and I can t wait to see you at the KSU Legacy Sale. PUREBRED BEEF UNIT Builds new headquarters; continues the legacy During the fall of 2016, the Department of Animal Sciences and Industry began construction to relocate the Purebred Unit headquarters. Please plan to join us for a dedication ceremony at 3 p.m. at the new headquarters where the pavement ends at the crest of hill as you approach the Stanley Stout Center. The new facility will provide state of the art equipment and space for the next chapter in the unit s history. New facilities include multipurpose, lab, calving barn and processing spaces as well as equipment to measure individual feed intake and efficiency. Our mission continues to provide undergraduate and graduate students with practical experience in breeding, feeding, management and marketing of purebred seedstock as well as give livestock selection and general animal science courses the opportunity to evaluate quality cattle. The faculty employing unit resources seek to conduct leading research in the areas of genetic improvement, nutrition and management of beef cattle for a range of economically important traits and serve as a demonstration facility highlighting the best management practices in beef production for breeding, genetics, reproductive management and nutrition. Kansas State University Purebred Beef Unit annually runs nearly 300 breeding-age purebred Angus, Hereford, and Simmental cows on 4,000 acres of native bluestem grass to meet this critical need.
