Loddon Valley Flyer festival special 09 Here it is at last finally finished!!!! Not even gong to try to emulate Lynne s edition of last year. Well the weather wasn t great on Saturday but we still managed to have a full program, all the guests were fantastic they all helped out one another in the arena displaying all their kites. Sunday we had sunshine but not a great deal of wind but still managed another full program!! The guests have all said how much they enjoyed it yet again!! Thank you Really big thanks to all who helped out either on the committee or on the day or just flew. Committee: Alan, Roy, Hayley, David and Mark. Workshop: David, Alison, Robert, Sam, Sara. Massive thanks to Roy & Hayley who print and make the sponsors banners and Roks as well as the children s design a kite competition winners. Thanks also to Malcolm of H&B hire for the loan of a diesel generator!! Pictures Cover picture: Peter from Drachenclub Schaffhausen said that we missed him off last years magazine so we are making up for it now. (although if he looks closer he was in it!) All pictures are by Jo Maurer, Alan & Lynne Cosgrove, Mike Webb, Roy Martin, Saravanan Tamilman, George Hennet, Flying Squad, Chris Goff, Team Spectrum 2

The Sponsors Really big thanks to our sponsors this year who were Kites Up, Early Years Childcare, Kingfisher Housing, Gazette Newspapers and of course Basingstoke and Deane Borough Council without whom the festival would not be possible. Sponsors banners printed by Roy and Hayley Guest List And don t forget LVKF use money from previous years to help pay for the festival. Big thanks also to the traders who all seem to want to come back. Red Bull Kite Force Ramlal, Mathieu, Richard and Yasu from France Flying Squad Stephen & Susan, Helen, Steve and Simon. Heinrich Hohmann Jo Maurer Martin Schob Rene Maier from Germany and Switzerland Chris Goff Nick James Les Ailes du Desir, Michel- Marie, Paul, Olivier, Frederick from France North Hants Buggy Club Close Encounters Allan and Marilyn Pothecary Nick James Schaffhausen Georges Hennet, Elmar and Helen Schallner, Peter Schülke, Sonia Conti and Roy Martin from Switzerland Team Spectrum - Carl and Bryan PA: Stephen Hoath & Simon Dann Also thanks to the White Horse Flyers, Brighton Kite Flyers and all the other individual peeps who flew. 3

Drachenclub Schaffhausen This year we saw the return of the peeps from Switzerland. With just one change in the line up being Sonia instead of Daniela. Sonia designs most of their kites and they have there own workshops where they get together to talk about the next step then go away to complete it. One of their new kites this year was the Xbox which looked fantastic! X Box Roy and Sonia Georges Elma Helen Peter again! 4

Helen showing the size of a stink bug Flutter by Butterfly! 5

Saturday night bash Big thanks to Lynne, David, Rosemary and Marilyn for the excellent food, thanks also to Linda for doing the bar. Mind you it did get that cold that Roy brought over his space heater!! Sonya, Helen, George and Peter Rene and Martin Heinrich & Sonia Nick, Chloe and Annie Hayley enjoying the local brew!! Lynne waiting for Roy to light up Richard basking in the heat 6

Saturday night fireworks On the Saturday evening Heinrich treated us to a Kite firework display to music. Some of the kites had luminous stripes sewn onto them and the others had the fireworks attached underneath. Martin with a luminous bird When I nod my head you hit it! Rene charging the luminous stripes with the firework. It s out there somewhere?? Heinrich fixing on the fireworks 7

Heinrich, Jo, Martin and Rene Heinrich and Jo brought over two news guests this year, Martin and Rene. They got into the swing of things straight away and really enjoyed themselves. Rene Heinrich Jo Martin 8

K ite Works hop Massive thanks to David, Alison, Sara, Robert and friend Sam who have taken on the kite workshop for the past few years. They save the club a lot of money by keeping it in house as it were. LVKF in the marquee Big thanks also to all who took turns on the LVKF stand in the marquee, helping set up in the mornings and collecting prizes off of the traders for the Mayor s raffle Roy, Sandra, Marilyn and Meg on marquee duty Mark wondering what raffle bag is the one for the Rok? Marilyn and Mayor drinking out of the Rok trophy. 10

Children s Desig n a K ite Competition To get the local children involved every year we stage a Children s Design a kite competition based on a theme, (this year it was Energy). It s open to all Key stages of school age. The comp is sent to all schools in the area by the council and is printed in the local Gazette. This year we had approx 150 entries. Judging is done by the festival committee and it s quite hard allowing for age and ability. Below are the 1st prize winners who have their design made into a one off never to be repeated kite. The kites are printed and made up by Roy B who takes time out of his busy schedule to do this, so many thanks Roy and to Hayley who puts up with him!!! Key stage 1 winner Key stage 2 winner Key stage 3 winner Ma yor s Raffle Every year we hold a raffle in aid of the Mayor s charity. Prizes are donated from traders and some guests. The items are numbered and displayed and a bag with the corresponding number is placed in on a table in front of it, so you don t have to win something you don t want. This year everyone wanted to win the Rok with the Bison ice hockey team logo that Schaffhausen made and donated. The raffle raised 276 which is great considering the current climate. 11

Close Encounters Great display from Allen and Marylyn Pothecary ably assisted by Doug Manners. Chris Goff Chris is now one of the top flyers in Europe and has also designed his own range of kites. The Fury which is one of Chris s designs! Chris getting some tips from Yasu 12

Red Bull Kite Force ( The team with a name ) Last year Kite force came to Basingstoke but hadn t named themselves yet. They are now sponsored by Red Bull and have been invited around the world, When they came to us it was their only appearance in the UK for this year! 13

Les Ailes du Desir Michel Marie, Olivier, Fredrick with new comer Paul really enjoyed the festival if not the rain as per usual says Michel Marie. 14

Sponsors Rokkaku Challenge The sponsors Rok challenge was once again keenly contested between guest flyers and club members. Jo won again this year flying the Council Rok, it was quite amusing to see Jo present the mayor with the trophy! (well I thought it was funny!!) Jo presenting the Mayor with the trophy he had just won for the Council!! Waiting for the launch Yes, I think that s right?? Myster y Ballet Every year we hold a mystery ballet competition where flyers have to perform to a piece of music but they have no idea what it is prior to flying. We have the top local flyers eagerly wanting to compete against our invited guests who are world class. Richard Debray was this years winner with a score of ( 7 no quiet Len) 9 out of 10. Richard from Red Bull Kite Force, winner of this years Mystery Ballet 15

Flying Squad Stephen Hoath and Simon Dann don their other hats to join Susan, Steve, Helen, TC and Gary for another excellent display. Flying Squad have been coming Basingstoke for Many years (and it don t seem a day too long!!!) and long may they return! 16

Oh dear!! Team Edo display flying by Roy Martin Colin Marshall setting up his delta And for my next number!!!! Is it a bird, is it a plane? No it s judging the altitude sprint Well can you tell which one is highest? Answers on a post card. 17

Nick James Old favourite Nick once again amazed us with his many different types of Angels. Over the summer Nick had an op on his ankle leaving him plastered (what do you mean nothing changed there then?) up for most of the summer. He was at Bristol KF lording it over everyone as he sat there in his chair giving directions. (only joking!) He s now had the cast removed so fingers crossed it s all ok now! Our French and German guests line up to fly Nick s Angels. Jo going for a long launch, Nick s wish catcher 18

Team Spectrum Due to other commitments Carl and Bryan only appear on Saturday but still put in 110% for their display. Thanks guys. Below Carl performs his routine of flying 2 or 3 kites at the same time!! 19

Sunda y nig ht melt down After the hectic weekend the club and guests enjoy a last meal together, before we all leave and hopefully meet up again next year! Martin showing off his dance moves. 20

Sunda y nig ht melt down Was it Colin or Rene who s Tango man? Colin posing!! Well that s a surprise!! Are you sure that s what we ordered??? Some of the guests had a very early 4am start Monday morning so they were having a last farewell in the hotel. 21

Tango man Peter read the article in the last magazine about Colin and the Orange squash and brought over a case of real orange juice just for him!! Just when you thought you d got away with it Colin! 22
