RECYCLE BIKES WHERE THE RUBBER MEETS THE ROAD

LEARNING OBJECTIVES Our Program! Identifying stakeholders Where to find bikes How to attract students Setting goals for volunteer work Setting up the program

RECYCLE BIKES RENTAL PROGRAM We collect bicycles from UPD and hold bike drives with the public Students apply to the program by emailing or visiting our office and filling out basic information. Program works on a first come, first served basis, but also gives priority to students who have not participated in the program before.

BASIC BIKE TRAINING Students MUST go through mandatory basic bike maintenance/safety training to enter the program. This allows them to safely handle and ride their bike, and allows them the freedom to keep up with the basics. We cover the rules of biking on campus as well as bike laws in Texas, how to use the U lock, change a flat, do a basic tune-up, and many other basics. Due to scheduling we typically host 2 bike maintenance/safety trainings per semester.

WHAT WE PROVIDE Bike in good, rideable condition Training in bike safety and maintenance Helmet, headlight and taillight, Kryptonite U-Lock Keeper for safety and security Complete bike maintenance service if needed Volunteer opportunities for entire semester

THE AGREEMENT Students agree to complete 18 hours of volunteer work with the Office of Campus Sustainability per semester in exchange for entry into bike program Students agree to use provided U locks, to obey local and campus laws and rules, and to keep up with volunteer hours Students agree to maintain their bikes and bring them in if they need assistance with repairs or basic maintenance. Students agree to bring in their bikes for a midterm check up to ensure the bikes are in good riding condition (Must have completed 9+ hours by midterm)

REMOVABLE OFFENSES Student does not use provided u lock Student continues to lock bike onto handrails rather than designated bike parking Student does not volunteer, or does not fulfill 9 hours by midpoint checkup Student egregiously violates bike safety recommendations and rules

BIKE RETURNS Bikes MUST be returned the week of finals Some students may be granted an extension, but only after all equipment has been brought in for end of semester return to be checked.

OUTCOMES AND BENEFITS Students are taught about our recycling program and frequently volunteer their labor; they learn how our recycling program works and then encourage others to use better recycling practices Students are taught basic bike safety and mechanical maintenance Students can use volunteer hours and valuable experience on resumes And of course, students receive affordable, environmentallyfriendly transportation for an entire semester

LIABILITY: ADVISEMENT FROM RISK MANAGEMENT Students sign a liability waiver to participate in the program if, this covers riding bikes and volunteering for our office. Risk Management wrote an agreement specifically for this program. (If a business works on the bikes, they assume the risk, if we do it in house we assume the risks.)

BIKE STORAGE Bikes are stored inside the fenced in area of the Physical Plant when not in use Looking for additional, more secure storage Bikes were originally stored in back room of Javelina House, but program has since outgrown the room

NUMBERS! SEMESTER NUMBER OF BIKES WAITING LIST SP 15 20 50 FALL 15 21 62 SP 16 22 63 FALL 16 26 67 SP 17 33 27

IDENTIFYING STAKEHOLDERS Our first committee Residential life, UPD, Student Affairs, Recreation, Health and Wellness, Art What we should have done: Invited the above, plus International Student Services, our key demographic Invited facilities, construction and planning- they have an idea of where more bike racks can be places, may have an idea of when and how more will be installed (if you re lucky!)

WHERE TO FIND BIKES UPD!!! Some may be in poor condition, can be used for parts Talk to Alumni Association- they can send out mailers, etc to invite alumni to donate their unwanted bikes to current students Team up with a local bike shop- they can provide service, remove your liability in some cases, and donate bikes and parts Many companies have bikes to contract out to us

HOW TO ATTRACT STUDENTS Word of mouth- International student community on our campus are very close-knit In class presentations to Freshmen Presentations during International Student Orientation Social Media Local bike shops

SETTING GOALS FOR VOLUNTEER WORK We want the students to come away having learned about sustainability Have varied volunteer activities What are your key focuses on campus? What are your student demographics? What majors are there? How can you give them skills in those areas with a sustainability focus?

SETTING UP THE PROGRAM Make committee, but don t create a camel. Student surveys Find what works for you-charge? Don t charge? Speak with risk management, facilities, student affairs, UPD, housing, and other stakeholders about implementation
