Media Information PRACTICES: Air Force Football Practices - The Air Force Academy prefers open football practices. Open practices allow faculty, media and our service members a chance to be in the midst of drills led by our coaches and performed by the cadets. In the bigger scope this access provides the opportunity to observe the training of officer candidates during an Academy mission element. Open practice guidelines include refraining of scouting for an opponent or reporting during practices to include injuries or tactics. Cell Phone Use - Out of respect for those attending or participating in practices, while on the practice field during workouts please silence cell phones. If you need to take or make a call, please exit the field before doing so. Video/Photography: Video and photography during practices can be done by those who are first cleared through the Air Force Academy Media Relations staff during pre-practice and periods 1-5 each day on Mondays and Tuesdays. Player and Coaches Availability - Open practices make it very easy to observe team members during athletic activities at the Air Force Academy. Player interviews prioritize each cadet s academic, military, squadron and leadership obligations in addition to any needed physical rehabilitation/treatment. Capt. Jared Tew, a 2011 Academy graduate, was a three-year letterman and two-year starter. Tew led Air Force to a 25-14 record, while rushing for 1,897 yards and 17 touchdowns on 416 carries in his career. In 2009, he was named Second Team All-Mountain West after rushing for a team-leading 970 yards, which ranked third in the conference. He earned a B.S. in Business Management from Air Force in 2011, and he has served as a pilot in the U.S. Air Force since graduation. Tew was ranked as the No. 1 wingman in the 35th Fighter Squadron during a one-year deployment at the Kunsan Air Base in Korea. He is currently flying the F-16 Fightin Falcon at the Aviano Air Base in Italy. FORMER FALCONS HOWARD HONORED The NCAA will recognize six former student-athletes with the NCAA Silver Anniversary Award for their collegiate and professional achievements. The Silver Anniversary Award annually recognizes distinguished individuals on the 25th anniversary of the conclusion of their college athletics careers. Representatives of NCAA member schools and conferences, along with a panel of former student-athletes, select each year s recipients. The 2015 recipients are Abby Cheng, Chris Howard, Jo-Juneau, Russell Maryland, Dikembe Mutombo, and Steve Smith. The NCAA will recognize the honorees at the Honors Celebration during the 2016 NCAA Convention on Jan. 15 in San Antonio. While in college, Chris Howard excelled on the football team, leading the U.S. Air Force Academy to back-to-back bowl games in 1989 and 1990, including an upset victory over The Ohio State University in the 1990 Liberty Bowl. His academic achievements were equally impressive, including two Academic All-America honors, an NCAA postgraduate scholarship and the 1990 Vincent DePaul Draddy Trophy (now known as the Campbell Trophy), which is the highest academic award in college football. He also earned a Rhodes Scholarship in 1991, and went on to earn a master s degree with distinction from Harvard Business School and a doctorate at Oxford University. He became an Air Force lieutenant colonel and served in Afghanistan in 2003, where he was awarded the Bronze Star. While on active duty, Howard served as an intelligence operations and plans officer with the elite Joint Special Operations Command. He currently serves as president at Hampden-Sydney College, which has improved 17 places in the U.S. News and World Report collegiate rankings under his leadership. Howard is on the NCAA Division III Presidents Council. He is a member of the national council of advisors to the Center for the Study of the Presidency and Congress, and a member of Virginia Gov. Terry McAuliffe s Commission to Ensure Integrity and Public Confidence in State Government. AIR FORCE HAS HIGHEST GSR IN MW, AMONG SERVICE ACADEMIES The Air Force football program has a graduation success rate of 87, according to the latest date released by the NCAA. The Falcons have the highest GSR in the Mountain West and among the three service academies. The score is the 10th best in the nation. Essentially, that translates to over 90 percent of the recruited varsity athletes that entered the Academy during the four year period of 2005-08 either graduated from the Academy or left academically eligible. Steelhammer is on the Jim Thorpe Award Watch List, given annually to the nation s top defensive back. He was also on the Lott IMPACT Trophy Watch List which is based on both athletic ability and character attributes. Junior wide receiver Jalen Robinette was on the 2015 Fred Biletnikoff Award Watch List. Robinette joins five others from the Mountain West. The Biletnikoff Award is given annually to the most outstanding receiver in college football. Senior defensive lineman Alex Hansen was on the 2015 Lombardi Award Watch List. Eligibility for the Rotary Lombardi Award is limited to down linemen, end-to-end, either on offense or defense, who set up no farther than 10 yards to the left or right of the ball, or linebackers who set up no farther than five yards deep from the line of scrimmage. AIR FORCE HAS SEVEN EARN ALL-MOUNTAIN WEST HONORS Air Force had seven players named to the all-mountain West football team. The Falcons had four players named to the first team, one second-team honoree and two honorable mention selections. Senior defensive lineman Alex Hansen and senior offensive lineman Sevrin Remmo, along with junior defensive backs Weston Steelhammer and Roland Ladipo were selected to the first team. Senior offensive lineman A.J. Ruechel was a second-team selection while junior running back Jacobi Owens and junior receiver Jalen Robinette were named honorable mention. ROBINETTE MOVING UP Junior receiver Jalen Robinette is second on the team in receiving with 21 catches and has team bests of 572 yards four touchdowns. He is averaging a team-best 27.2 yards per reception which is the second-best single-season mark in Air Force history. He trails only Craig Hancock s 31.0 mark set in 1994. Robinette had two catches for 79 yards and a 67-yard TD catch at Boise State. He had one of the best days in school history in Air Force s win over Utah State Nov. 14. Robinette had career highs with seven receptions and 210 receiving yards. His 210 yards are the most-ever in the option era (1980-present), the third-most overall in school history and most since 1978. He hauled in a 74- yard touchdown catch which is the 12th longest in school history and longest since 2005. Robinette has proved his all-around ability this season. He has hit both pass attempts this season for 76 yards and two TDs. Robinette has hit three of four passes for 130 yards and three TDs in his career. STEELHAMMER RANKS FIFTH IN AF HISTORY Junior Weston Steelhammer leads the Falcons in tackles with 80 and interceptions with five. He is third on the team in tackles for loss with 10.5 and second in pass breakups with seven. He has 148 career total tackles and is second among active Falcons with 16.5 career tackles for loss. The first-team all-mountain West junior safety recorded his fifth interception at New Mexico. The interception is the 11 of his career which ties for fifth in school history. Steelhammer has 14 career turnovers (11 INT, 3 FR). Steelhammer had six tackles and his first interception of the season vs. San Jose State. He also recorded a career-best 3.0 tackles for loss, including a sack. He was named Mountain West defensive player of the week and College Sports Madness MW player of the week for his efforts. He is second on the team in tackles with 74 overall and has a sack and 4.5 tackles for loss. He is second on the team in interceptions with three. Ladipo leads the conference and is 15th nationally in pass breakups and recorded a career-best four at Boise State. Ladipo had a career-best 12 tackles and a tackle for loss at Colorado State. He had his first-career pick in the season opening win over Morgan State, returning it 22 yards for the first touchdown of his career. BROWN CONTINUES ALL-PURPOSE PLAY Senior WR/KR Garrett Brown continues to post outstanding all-purpose numbers for Air Force. The senior receiver leads the team with 26 catches and is second in yards with 534. He is averaging 20.5 yards per catch and has rushed for 220 yard and a touchdown on 29 carries. In addition, he is averaging 9.3 yards per punt return. Brown led the Falcons in rushing and receiving against Navy, rushing for 45 yards on nine carries and catches three passes for 64 yards. He also had one punt return for 15 yards. He rushed for a career-best 78 yards and scored on a career-long 63 yard run vs. San Jose State. Brown had a career-high 180 all-purpose yards in Air Force s win over Morgan State with three carries for 38 yards and a team-best two catches for 58 yards. He had a career-high 83 yards on two punt returns, including a 75 yard punt return for a touchdown. Brown s 75 yard return is the fifth-longest in school history and marks the first punt return for a touchdown for Air Force since Anthony Wright had an 88-yard TD return vs. Army in 2009. BROWN, ROBINETTE CHART WATCHING Senior Garrett Brown and junior Jalen Robinette have combined to form one of the most prolific receiving tandems in Air Force history. Brown ranks sixth in career receptions with 82 and seventh in career receiving yards with 1,311. Robinette is eighth in receptions with 79 and third in yards with 1,659. Brown and Robinette are just the second pair of teammates to each hit the 1,000-yard mark. They join Steve Hoog (1975-78) and Paul Williams (1975-77).
