The pier will soon undergo a major renovation with a 360 ft by 36 ft portion to be demolished and reconstructed over an 8 month period. Work should be completed by early 2014, or maybe later depending on summer vacationeers. - Debate is going on in Amarillo, Texas over the dismantling of Stanley Marsh s Cadillac Ranch Art installation near Route 66 ( this is the field where a multitude of Cadilacs have been up-ended). Consideration for this is due to Marsh s involvement in various civil and criminal lawsuits. - In Williams, AZ, a medical marijuana dispensary opened on Route 66 in late January. Interestingly the dispensary is called the Route 66 Wellness Center! _ Television Station WEIU-TV which hosts a program called Heartland Highways featured a story about Atlanta, Illinois which has embraced Route 66 tourism. And by doing so, according to the mayor, sales-tax revenues have risen by 43% from 2008 to 2012. As part of this effort, the town plans to reopen a 1920 s boarding house for overnight travelers. ( Hint, hint Flagstaff.)

PAGE 4 Wow.See the Route 66 Car Show write-up by the ARIZONA CLASSIC T-BIRD CLUB of Phoenix submitted and printed in the EARLY BIRD Magazine of the CLASSIC THUNDERBIRD CLUB INTERNA- TIONAL : COOL CARS -- COOL TOWN Historic Route 66 goes right thru Flagstaff, one of the coolest towns in Arizona. Flagstaff is also a favorite summer destination for many of the `Snow Bird` members in our T-Bird club who seek relief from the summer heat in Phoenix... and it`s a great location for a Cool Car Show. Every Spring, the AZ T-Bird Club members, Paul & Jean Fruscello, jump in their `56 T-Bird and migrate to Flagstaff where they live all summer. While there, as in past years, they do all the planning for our club`s participation in one of the best summer car shows in Arizona...Route 66 Days. They plan the 140 mile caravan from Phoenix (even in the rain to test T-Bird wipers), they arrange for rooms, parking at the show and...they schedule the all important `Happy Hours` and evening dining for about 45+ members... and they work for free! This year`s show was the 8th annual Flagstaff Route 66 Days Charity Car Show held every Sept. It`s a sold out event with 425 Cool Cars parked on the closed off streets in the historic downtown business district. What a perfect site for a car show. It seems like the whole town turns out to see this show with the `locals` bringing all their dogs along for a walk on a cool sunny day. With hundreds of outstanding Cool cars on display, many vendors to check out, lots of dogs and people to watch...route 66 Days has it all. The Route 66 Car Club of Flagstaff again did a terrific job on this annual show which gets better every year with cars entered from everywhere. This year`s award for longest distance driven went to Oliver and Terry Holler who drove their `82 DeLorean 2500 miles from Myrtle Beach, SC. The top show award went to Doug & Trish Weigel of Albuquerque, NM,... 1916 Ford Model T Milk Truck and the top T-Bird award (all years) went to Donald & Violet Ledford from Lake Havasu City, AZ, for their`57 T-Bird. Although none of the Arizona Classic T-Bird Club`s ten cars were in the winner`s circle this year, our fearless leaders, Paul & Jean Fruscello certainly were. They were this year`s winner of the big Route 66 Days 50-50 drawing for a fist full of cool cash.now we don`t feel so bad about them working for free! We thank the Flagstaff Route 66 Car Club for their hospitality and especially our very own Paul & Jean and all the other club members who helped make this Cool Weekend one of our favorite events. As Paul says "We are looking forward to next year...keep driving those `Birds!" P.S...Don`t forget the Rain-X! Stewart Wright, CTCI #17206 Glendale, Arizona Arizona Classic T-Bird Club reprinted from EarlyBird magazine, Nov-Dec 2012 Classic Thunderbird Club International The Route 66 Courier thanks the EARLY BIRD and Stewart Wright for sharing this article & pictures with the Route 66 Club!
