SCOUTING THE HAWKS: Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference program Maryland Eastern Shore started the season with a 92-38 win over Valley Forge before falling to fellow D-I programs Buffalo (76-41) and Syracuse (68-45) in road games last week... the Hawks are led by Jordyn Smith (10.7 ppg, 5.0 rpg, 3.3 spg,.441 FG) and Tori Morris (8.0 ppg, 8.7 rpg). ALL-TIME SERIES: The Seawolves have not played any of this week s visiting Shootout teams. SHOOTOUT SNAPSHOT: The Seawolves aim for their seventh GCI Great Alaska Shootout title when they host the tournament for the fourth and fi nal time at Alaska Airlines Center... UAA s game against Maryland Eastern Shore will be a regular-season counter, while the Seawolves Thursday contest will be counted as an exhibition for UAA and a regular game on its opponent s record... this marks the 38th edition of the women s Shootout, which was known as the Northern Lights Invitational from 1980-97... from 1999 to 2013, the Shootout was played at Sullivan Arena... fi nd complete historical info at GoSeawolves.com/Shootout. SEAWOLVES AT THE SHOOTOUT: In 1990, the Seawolves became the fi rst Div. II women s team to win a tournament against all- Div. I competition, repeating their feat at the 2003, 2006, 2007, 2008 & 2009 Shootouts... the fi rst title came when the tournament included eight teams and was known as the Northern Lights Invitational; the subsequent championships have come under the current 4-team format the Seawolves are 36-56 all-time in the Shootout and 16-20 since the current format began in 1999... although UAA went winless in 2016 losing close contests to Portland and Missouri State the Seawolves own 37 regular-season wins against 33 different NCAA Div. I programs... UAA s last D-I victory came against Pepperdine (94-61) in the first round of the 2015 GCI Great Alaska Shootout. UAA CLAIMS CLASSIC CROWN: The Seawolves won the unofficial title of their own Seawolf Hoops Classic with a pair of dominating performances Nov. 17 & 18, beating Holy Names 92-49 and Western State 82-54 at the Alaska Airlines Center... in the first game, Sr. G Rodericka Ware scored a game-high 19 points (8-14 FG) and tournament Most Outstanding Player Hannah Wandersee delivered 17 points (6-8 FG, 5-5 FT), 6 rebounds, 2 assists and 2 blocks as UAA outscored the Pacific West Conference club 75-34 over the last three quarters, including a program-record +26 Ware scoring differential (33-7) in the 4th quarter... Jr. G Kian McNair had 14 points (6-12 FG) and a UAA seasonhigh 6 steals, and Fr. F Sala Langi notched 5 points, 7 rebounds and 2 steals to help UAA outshoot the Hawks.479 to.273... on Saturday, Wandersee had 16 points (8-13 FG), 6 rebounds and 4 blocks, So. PG Yazmeen Goo scored a career-high 11 points (4-7 FG, 1-1 3FG, 2-2 FT) and had 4 of UAA s 20 steals, and Ware totaled 10 points and 4 assists against the visitors from the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference... nine of the 11 active Seawolves scored at least 6 points, including 7 apiece for Fr. G Nicole Pinckney and Jr. G Sydni Stallworth... in addition to Wandersee, Goo, McNair and Ware also made the all-tourney team. SEAWOLVES DODGE SHARKS, PLUCK EAGLES: UAA earned two important West Region victories to begin their Div. II slate at the Wildcat Crossover in Ellensburg, Wash., Nov. 10-11... on Friday, the Seawolves got career highs of 24 points, 11 rebounds and 4 assists from Jr. C Hannah Wandersee, plus 14 points (5-7 FG, 2-3 3FG) and 5 rebounds from Sr. F Shelby Cloninger as they fended off a late Sharks run for a 82-74 win... WINNING WAYS: UAA has won 35 straight regular-season games (including GNAC Tournament) against NCAA Div. II opponents since falling 67-66 to Simon Fraser in the 2015-16 home finale... the Seawolves are also currently on program-best streaks of 22 consecutive road wins and 18 straight conference road wins... UAA is a combined 61-3 including 28-1 on the road in GNAC regular-season and tournament games over the last three seasons... at 102-7 (.936), the Seawolves have the most victories and the best winning percentage in NCAA Div. II since 2014-15... the 2017-18 Seawolves are seeking the program s 12th consecutive winning season and 11th NCAA Tournament berth in 12 years... UAA has gone a combined 157-14 (.918) in the last 11 seasons on its home courts... with a 4-0 mark thus far this season, UAA has won 40 straight regular-season, non-conference games against Div. II opponents, with the last loss coming in Ryan McCarthy s Seawolf coaching debut, Nov. 9, 2012 (Colo. Mines)... the Seawolves have led the nation in steals per game for four straight seasons and are already averaging a superior figure with 17.4 spg through the first five games. WANDERSEE AWAKENING: A reserve in 66 of 71 career games for this year, Jr. C Hannah Wandersee has entered the starting 5 and delivered in a big way, ranking No. 2 in the GNAC in scoring (17.4 ppg) and leading the league in FG% (.643), FT% (1.000, 14-14) and blocks per game (2.4)... UAA s leading rebounder with 7.0 rpg, she collected GNAC co-player of the Week for her efforts against Hawaii Pacifi c and Cal State LA, and she earned the Wandersee Seawolf Hoops Classic Most Outstanding Player last week with 16.5 ppg, 6.0 rpg, 2.0 apg, 3.0 bpg and.667 FG shooting against Holy Names and Western State... the Kodiak product had her fi rst career double-double against a Div. II opponent with her careerhigh 24 points and career-high-tying 11 rebounds against Hawaii Pacifi c, and she has twice already equaled her career-best 4 assists... with 5-of-5 FT shooting against HNU, she reached the minimum 100 attempts to make UAA s career list, premiering at No. 1 with her.860 (86-100) accuracy; Wandersee s other career ranks include 3rd in FG% (.537), 11th in blocks per game (0.67) and 13th in blocks (52). TARA TERRIFIC: After coming off the bench in 39 games on UAA s 2016 NCAA Runner-Up squad as a redshirt freshman, Jr. SG Tara Thompson logged all 32 starts last season and more than doubled her averages, emerging as UAA s 2nd-leading scorer (8.9 ppg) and an effective rebounder (3.5 rpg)... the former Dimond Lynx star and 2017-18 GNAC Preseason All- Conference pick led the GNAC and ranked 6th nationally with a.436 3FG%, and ranked 2nd in GNAC Thompson and 57th nationally with 2.5 3FGs made per game... with a.399 career 3FG%, Thompson ranks 6th in UAA and 10th in GNAC history, while her 119 total 3FGs rank 8th on the all-time Seawolf list.
