Voice of the Swan As summer quickly approaches, my time at the club is coming to an end. I would like to thank everyone for the support you have shown me. It has been a pleasure serving the community of Swan Point, the Staff and Brookfield Homes over the last year. In my professional life I have had the opportunity to work with many fine clubs. Each property has its own unique challenges. It is the General Managers responsibility to identify the challenges; then develop and implement a plan to provide a clear vision for the club. Throughout my career I have always tried to make improvements with each assignment. I work hard to leave a property with some accomplishments and in good working condition. The physical improvements at Swan Point include the Men s and Women s Locker-rooms upgrades, the Business Center renovation, Veranda and Midway lighting projects and the upcoming Golf Shop enhancement. Operationally, there is a strong team in place that works well together and has a mutual respect for each other. I believe this team will serve you well for years to come. I was once told that Maturity comes when you stop making excuses and start making changes. That, we have done. Though Peggy and I have yet to find our Florida home, we still have a house to market and sell in New York. I have a list of Honey Do s that has grown significantly in my time away. And Kemper Sports has new projects and opportunities on the horizon. I know I will look back at my time with you fondly, and hope you will do the same. John Hello Sunshine looks like May will be off to a warm start! I am looking forward to the nicer weather highlighting all things beautiful at Swan Point. The month of May will be an eventful start for both the Golf and Wedding Season at the Clubhouse thus introducing our Curbside Pick Up service at the Point Grill. The Curbside Pick Up service will be like Carryout and only available during private events at the Grill, mostly Fridays-Sundays. Simply call the Grill to place your order and upon your arrival we will bring the order right to your vehicle...just pull up to the designated Curbside Pick Up location right next to our mailbox and we will come out to you! How s that for Swan Point service? The Curbside Pick Up service will only be available during private events and the phone representative will inform you accordingly. In addition, there will be special directional signage to the Curbside Pick Up location. This is truly an exciting time of year! Summer is right around the corner. Be sure to mark your calendars for the Pool Party Kickoff this month, the Summer Concert Series and stop by Midway Grill for a Snow Cone! Hello Everyone! Golf News My name is Andy Donaty and I am excited and honored to join the golf team at Swan Point Yacht & Country Club. I have been a lover of golf since I was five years old and after I graduated from DeMatha Catholic High School, I decided to make a career of it. After working at the Country Club at Woodmore during my high school years, I joined the team at Glenn Dale Golf Club after I graduated high school. After 18 great years at Glenn Dale I decided that it was time for a change. I am honored that Swan Point has given me this opportunity to bring my expertise to their team. I am excited to join Donnie, Patti and Ned in making your golf experience the best in the state of Maryland. We are excited for the golf season to begin; my best advice to you golfers, keep it in the short stuff. Winner of the SPWGA Presidents Cup: 1st place Terri Baker 2nd place net, Joyce Hilwig Low gross winner was Rosemary Hersey. Assistant Superintendent The month of April was a good representation of the odd weather we experience in Maryland. The low and occasional high temperatures weren t ideal for the Bermuda green up or the closing of aerification holes on greens. This time last year we were fortunate enough to experience average spring weather resulting in an early green up. We are currently beginning to see Bermuda growth and we should be mowing fairways, tees, and approaches before long. As our warm season turf gains its color we are scheduling our May cultivation plans. We will be completing a deep tine aerification on our greens on May 21 st. The tines will be creating holes 8-12 inches deep promoting optimum root depth before they undergo summer stress. The next plan is to aerify tees sometime in late May. This is all in preparation for healthy turf during the season. In addition to these plans, in May I will also become the full-time Assistant Superintendent. My first summer interning here in 2016 led to me continuing a part-time position throughout the rest of my college career. I am graduating from the University of Maryland this May with a B.S. in Turf and Golf Course Management and am excited to start my career in the golf course industry. I look forward to working at Swan Point for my third season and first season as the assistant. Evan Meinhardt Assistant Superintendent Summer Concert Series is off to a great start! Peggy Schaumburg, a SPSC member, showed her High Altar needlepoint kneeler. Several years ago she was asked to participate in the volunteer project to complete the kneelers for the National Cathedral. It was awesome to see her fabulous workmanship. The tea was held in the tall turret room. The view was remarkable. It is a wonderful place to take your visitors. SPSC thanks Adele Adams, Wilda Cheseldine, Judy Mudd and June Devito for planning the trip. They provide great refreshments on the bus trip! On May 16, SPSC will be hosted by member Bonnie Richwine at her home for a Potluck Garden Luncheon. The Community Yard sale is Saturday May 19.
